Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26:The Sea Notices Small Things

The island was long gone behind them.

Only open water remained again.

The ship moved steadily forward.

Wind was favorable.

Sails held firm.

Kevin stood at the helm, silent as always.

Carina sat near the mast, watching the sea without speaking.

"…We should be fine for a while."

Kevin checked supplies mentally.

Enough food.

Enough water.

No immediate shortage.

But something still felt off.

Not danger.

Not threat.

Just… imbalance.

Carina shifted slightly, leaning against the railing.

"…You always think like that?"

Kevin replied without looking back.

"…Like what?"

"…Like something's missing even when nothing is wrong."

Kevin paused slightly.

Then answered.

"…Because something usually is."

Carina didn't respond immediately.

She just watched the waves.

Hours passed.

The sea stayed calm.

Too calm again.

Kevin adjusted course slightly.

Then stopped.

"…Ship."

Far ahead.

A silhouette.

Not large.

But moving.

Another vessel.

Carina stood up slowly.

"…Pirates?"

Kevin narrowed his eyes.

"…Likely."

The ship ahead began changing direction.

Not random.

Intentional.

They had seen each other.

Kevin didn't change course immediately.

He observed first.

Distance.

Speed.

Angle.

"…Smaller crew."

Carina looked at him.

"…Are we fighting?"

Kevin answered calmly.

"…Depends on them."

The other ship closed distance faster.

Now clearly visible.

Ragged sails.

Modified hull.

Armed men on deck.

Pirates.

But not organized like before.

More desperate.

One of them shouted across the water.

"Hey! Small ship! Stop there!"

Kevin didn't respond.

He adjusted sails slightly.

Carina frowned.

"…That doesn't sound friendly."

Kevin replied.

"…It rarely does."

The pirate ship continued approaching.

Not attacking yet.

Just closing distance.

Then another shout.

"Drop your supplies and we'll let you live!"

Carina blinked.

"…That's bold."

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Standard."

The pirate ship began flanking slightly.

Trying to trap positioning.

Kevin noticed immediately.

"…They're trying to cut movement."

He adjusted the helm.

Letting the ship shift sideways.

Avoiding direct alignment.

Carina watched closely.

"…You're not scared?"

Kevin answered.

"…No reason to be yet."

The pirate ship fired a warning shot.

Water splashed nearby.

Carina flinched slightly.

Kevin didn't.

"…Still not close enough."

The pirates grew impatient.

Another cannon fired.

Closer this time.

Kevin exhaled.

"…They're rushing."

That was a mistake.

He turned the ship slightly into a better angle.

Not away.

Not toward.

Diagonal.

Carina noticed.

"…What are you doing?"

Kevin replied.

"…Creating space."

The pirate ship overextended slightly while adjusting.

Their formation broke for a moment.

Kevin saw it instantly.

"…Now."

He didn't attack.

He simply accelerated forward using wind angle.

The ship slipped through the gap they created.

Cleanly.

The pirates shouted in frustration.

"Hey! Don't let them slip!"

They turned again.

But too late.

Distance increased.

Kevin didn't look back.

"…Not worth engaging."

Carina exhaled softly.

"…So we just run?"

Kevin answered.

"…We continue."

The pirate ship eventually stopped pursuit.

Too far.

Not worth extended chase.

They drifted away.

Silence returned to the sea.

Carina sat back down.

"…That was easier than I thought."

Kevin replied.

"…Most encounters are."

A few minutes passed.

Then Carina spoke again.

"…You didn't even draw your sword."

Kevin answered.

"…No need."

She looked at him.

"…What if they caught us?"

Kevin said simply.

"…They didn't."

Silence again.

But this one felt different.

Carina studied him quietly.

Not fear.

Not admiration.

Just understanding forming slowly.

"…You always choose the easiest path?"

Kevin shook his head slightly.

"…No."

"…The most efficient one."

The sea stretched endlessly ahead again.

No ships.

No islands.

Just movement.

Carina leaned back.

"…That sounds lonely again."

Kevin didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…It is normal."

Carina didn't press further.

The ship continued forward.

Wind steady.

Direction unchanged.

But something subtle had changed.

Not danger.

Not structure.

Understanding.

Carina was no longer just a passenger.

And Kevin was no longer entirely alone.

Even if neither of them said it.
