Chapter 2 - honesty wins

In a small village surrounded by green fields and tall mango trees, there lived a boy named Arjun. He was known for his simple nature, kind heart, and, above all, his honesty. While other children sometimes found ways to avoid trouble by telling lies, Arjun always chose to speak the truth—even when it was difficult.

Arjun's father was a farmer, and his mother worked hard at home. They lived a modest life, but they were happy. His parents had always taught him one important lesson: "Truth may be hard, but it always leads to the right path." Arjun believed this deeply.

One day, while returning from school, Arjun found a leather wallet lying on the dusty road near the village market. He picked it up and looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for it. Curious, he opened the wallet and was shocked to see a large amount of money inside, along with some important documents.

For a moment, his heart raced. His family needed money. They had been struggling to pay for seeds for the next crop. This money could solve many of their problems. A thought crossed his mind: "What if I keep it? No one saw me pick it up."

But just as quickly, he remembered his father's words. He closed the wallet and said to himself, "This money is not mine. Keeping it would be wrong."

Arjun decided to find the owner. He looked through the documents and found an identity card with the name "Mr. Verma," along with an address in the nearby town. Without wasting time, Arjun went home and told his parents everything.

His mother looked worried. "It's a long way to the town, and it's already getting late," she said.

But his father smiled proudly. "We will go together tomorrow morning," he said. "You have done the right thing."

The next day, Arjun and his father walked to the town. After asking several people for directions, they finally reached Mr. Verma's house. It was a large house, showing that he was a wealthy man.

Arjun knocked on the door. A servant opened it, and after hearing their purpose, he called Mr. Verma. When Mr. Verma came out, he looked tense and worried.

"Yes, what is it?" he asked.

Arjun stepped forward and handed him the wallet. "Sir, I found this on the road near our village yesterday. I think it belongs to you."

Mr. Verma's eyes widened in disbelief. He quickly opened the wallet and checked inside. Everything was there—money, documents, and all.

"I lost this yesterday!" he exclaimed. "I had given up hope of ever finding it again."

He looked at Arjun with gratitude. "Do you know how much money is in here? You could have kept it. Why didn't you?"

Arjun replied simply, "Because it is not mine, sir. My parents taught me to always be honest."

Mr. Verma was deeply moved. In a world where people often chose shortcuts, this boy had chosen the right path without hesitation.

"I must reward you," Mr. Verma said, taking out some money from the wallet.

But Arjun stepped back. "No, sir. I didn't return it for a reward. I just did what was right."

Mr. Verma insisted, but Arjun politely refused again. Finally, Mr. Verma smiled and said, "At least allow me to help your family in some way."

After a moment of thought, Arjun's father spoke, "If you truly wish to help, you can support his education. He is a bright student, but we have limited means."

Mr. Verma agreed immediately. "It would be my honor," he said. "From today, I will take responsibility for Arjun's education."

Years passed, and Arjun worked hard in his studies. With Mr. Verma's support and his own determination, he excelled in school and later went on to become a respected officer. People in his village looked up to him with pride.

One day, during a speech at a school, Arjun shared his story with the students.

"There was a time," he said, "when I had a chance to choose between honesty and dishonesty. The easy path was to keep what I found, but the right path was to return it. That one decision changed my life."

He paused and looked at the young faces in front of him.

"Remember this," he continued, "honesty may not always give you immediate rewards, but it builds trust, respect, and a future you can be proud of. Lies may bring short-term gain, but they always lead to long-term loss."

The students listened carefully, inspired by his words.

Back in his village, Arjun's parents often sat outside their home, watching the sunset with peaceful smiles. They were proud not because their son had become successful, but because he had remained true to the values they had taught him.

The story of Arjun spread far and wide, becoming an example for others. People began to believe once again that honesty was not a weakness, but a strength.

And so, in a simple yet powerful way, Arjun proved that honesty truly wins—not just in the moment, but in life itself.
