Chapter 1 - The Genesis Shard

"- The next topic for today will be the effects of the meteor, the Genesis Shard, that crashed upon Earth in the twenty-second century."

The professor never looked up once from the desk that was projecting the hologram of a blank screen to the whole class. Yet, he could see all the students through the mechanical eyes of his bonded owl.

The eyes of the owl scouted for a victim to answer the question, its eyes barely stopping over a young man seemingly sleeping in the corner of the room, before landing on the student scribbling notes next to him on her desk.

The desk kept changing, much like a computer screen, being able to upload every note that was taken straight into the neurochip. Neurochips are planted in every living being on Earth as mandated by the government in order to further living conditions.

The teacher is still focused on his desk and quickly says, "Rumi, care to answer the question?"

The student, Rumi, finally looked up from her desk before she started to answer the question posed by the teacher.

Before answering, Rumi cleared her throat before starting to say, "Well, the Genesis Shard was a meteor that was the size of traditional China. This one meteor crashed into the Pacific Ocean, wedging itself into the planet, making the eighth continent, Solaria. Yet this wasn't all. This massive meteor brought two new elements to Earth, Moirite and Meteorite."

Rumi stopped to catch her breath as the professor broadcast three images to all the students' minds. The first was a large area filled with jagged mountains that seemed to pierce the heavens, with valleys that seemed to never end. Yet through it all, the area was lush with life of all kinds, seemingly outgrowing all other areas on Earth. Each plant or even stone that lived in that continent was covered in dark blue to purple markings, seemingly like tatoos ridden, all over them.

The second image was an image of a rock glowing blue and purple as if it were highly reactive to everything that surrounded the rock. There was a shifting in the rock that seemed like it was, but wasn't solid at the same point in space and time.

Meanwhile, the third image was a diagram of DNA. At the top, it stated Homo sapiens, and it looked much like a before-and-after diagram. The image showed that the DNA before was a perfect double helix structure, yet after, it seemed that some parts of the DNA started to reach out seemingly into the nothingness. These pieces were then suddenly connected to another strand of reaching out DNA.

The image showed many different names for many different animals or plants, yet one thing stood out: they were connected, whether it be physically or spiritually, they were linked biologically at least.

The teacher stood up from his desk and scanned the class with his own eyes this time. His eyes were caught by the boy in the corner once more, and this time he called on him, "Now Kael, you might be a 5-star recruit yet, that is no reason to sleep through class, is it. Your punishment will be finishing this question."

"Moirite is the basis of magic; Meteorite is the skeleton of technology," Kael stated, his voice monotone as he drummed his fingers upon the desk. "Meteorite made up the Shard's core. It's the catalyst for the nanotech that governs modern combat and the main ingredient for these nano-tattoos."

He flexed his hand. Beneath the skin, jagged black chains of ink shifted, wrapped around each finger, and started to disappear into the cuffs of his uniform before snaking out and returning to their original form.

"Moirite was the element trapped inside," he continued, eyes flicking toward his shoulder where his crow was perched. "Once it crashed, it infected. It forced a mutation that made every living being on Earth a part of a collective web. We bond to survive and evolve, making us as dependent on the sapient races that were once below us thousands of years ago. Our synchronization with the partners is key in increasing powers, just as important as storing moirite and gaining tech. There was also a bond between soulmates, which can increase the power between beings even farther than it was before meeting them. Of course, synchronization is also a big part of this as well."

//Author's note: The soulmate sync would work if the soulmates have a 10% sync, then the boost ot combat power would be (Original power of one of them) * 1.10 = (Total Combat power). You guys can ask questions if there are any questions about the power system.

He leaned back, his gaze locking onto the Professor's mechanical owl that studied him. "Is that enough of a review, Professor Song?"

The professor looked at Kael and nodded slightly before sitting back in his seat and saying, "That was a wonderful explanation, Kael and Rumi. Now time to get to the real reason I asked to review that basic knowledge."

The old man sent another message to all students in the class through their neurochips before starting once more.

"This is the real reason. In a month, we will be heading to the very spot of the Shard of Genesis. We will be heading to Solaria, the birthplace of magic and technology. Now, if you wouldn't mind, care to explain what we will be doing there, Lyra?"

A student in the back barely moved before stating back, "I would love to, Professor."

The young woman stood before moving to the front and stated, "Our mission will be to train in advance for the inter-university tournament, and to also collect samples, for both the mutated meteorite and moirite. There were certain changes that the Unnatural Intelligence Agency (UIA) is sending us to scout out."

She scanned the class before she spoke once more, "The requirements for this mission will be to have a partner, and to have at least 5% synchronization with your bond. Understand?"

The whole class nodded at the requirements, most of which were at 4% at 18 years of having been bonded with their partner since birth. Gaining a percent was no easy task, causing many hardships for both bond partners.

Lyra looked over at Professor Song before the teacher stated, "If all is understood, then class dismissed. Yet I encourage all of you to train more. At the moment, only two of you, Kaelen and Lyra, are eligible to join based on synchronization levels. As expected of the only 5-star recruits in this university yet, I promise you, going would only be a boon to your training."
