Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 24: THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER

🖤

After that conversation— Nothing went back to normal. Because now, there was no pretending left. Only awareness.

Cassy felt it the moment she stepped back into the office. Eyes followed her. Whispers lingered. But none of that mattered. Because there was only one gaze she couldn't ignore anymore.

His.

"Miss Williams."

She looked up. Caleb stood at his office door. Watching her. Not calling her in. Just watching.

"Yes, sir?" she asked softly.

A pause. Then— "Come here." Not sharp. Not commanding. Just… quiet.

Cassy stood and walked toward him. Every step felt heavier now. Because everything meant more now.

Inside his office, the door closed behind her. The sound echoed louder than usual.

"You didn't finish the investor report," he said.

Cassy blinked. "I sent it this morning."

"I know." A pause. Then— "I wanted to see if you'd correct me."

That made her stop. "…What?"

Caleb leaned back slightly. "You've been correcting me lately."

Cassy hesitated. Then said softly— "Only when you're wrong."

Silence.

For a second— He almost smiled. Almost. But it didn't fully reach his lips.

"That's dangerous," he said quietly.

Cassy tilted her head slightly. "Only if you're not used to being wrong."

That made him pause. Because she wasn't wrong.

Caleb stood up slowly. The movement was deliberate. Controlled. But something underneath it wasn't.

"You're different now," he said.

Cassy frowned slightly. "Because I talk back?"

"No." A step closer. "Because you don't hesitate anymore."

Silence.

Cassy's breath caught slightly. "…Should I?" she asked softly.

Another step closer. Now the distance between them was almost gone.

"Yes," he said quietly. A pause. Then— "But I don't want you to."

That contradiction hung between them. Heavy. Real.

Cassy looked up at him. Really looked. "You keep saying things like that," she said.

"Like what?"

"Things that don't match."

Silence.

Caleb's gaze softened— just slightly. "I told you," he said. "I don't understand this."

Cassy nodded slowly. "…Me neither."

And that honesty— That shared confusion— felt more intimate than anything else.

A long silence followed. Neither of them moved. Because moving meant breaking it. And neither of them wanted that.

Finally, Cassy stepped back first. Just slightly. Enough to breathe again. "We should focus on work," she said softly. But her voice didn't sound convinced.

Caleb didn't stop her. But he didn't move either. "Cassy."

She paused.

"Yes?"

A beat. Then— "Stay after work."

Her heart skipped. "…For work?" she asked.

Silence. Then— "Yes." But it didn't sound like it.

Cassy nodded slowly. "…Okay." And she left.

The rest of the day passed slower than usual. Every glance meant something. Every silence said more than words.

And when evening finally came— The office emptied. Lights dimmed. Voices disappeared.

Except for them.

Cassy stood outside his office door. Her hand hesitating for just a second before knocking.

"Come in."

She stepped inside. And immediately felt it. That same shift. That same tension. But stronger now.

Caleb wasn't behind his desk. He was standing by the window again. Like before. But this time— He turned the moment she entered.

"You stayed," he said.

Cassy nodded. "You asked me to."

A pause. Then— "I don't ask things I don't mean," he said. That landed differently.

Cassy stepped closer slowly. "…What did you need?"

Silence.

Caleb looked at her. Long. Careful. Like he was choosing his next words more than usual.

Then finally— "I needed to see if this was still here," he said quietly.

Cassy blinked. "…What?"

He didn't answer with words.

He just looked at her. That same look. The one that stayed too long. The one that said too much. The one she felt even when he wasn't near.

And that's when she understood.

"…It is," she whispered.

Silence.

Neither of them moved.

Because now— There was no denying it. No avoiding it. No pretending it wasn't real.

Whatever this was— It was still there.

And it wasn't going anywhere.
