Chapter 65 - Chapter 65 — The One Between Heartbeats

Silence settled over the City of Echoes.

The Hollow Judge had retreated.

The Veiled Court remained suspended above the city, their perfect formation broken for the first time in countless ages.

No one moved.

No one dared to.

The words from the nameless librarian's book still echoed in every mind.

The Fourth has awakened.

Kai stood in the center of the shattered square.

Silver light flowed beneath his skin like rivers of living starlight.

The Coreless Heart no longer beat as a single pulse.

There were now two rhythms.

His own...

And another.

Older.

Slower.

Each time the second heartbeat sounded, reality seemed to hesitate for the smallest fraction of a second.

No one else noticed.

But Kai did.

Ashren stared at him in silence.

"...Can you hear it?"

Kai nodded.

"It's... calling me."

"From where?"

Kai slowly lifted his eyes toward the sky.

"I don't know."

"It's everywhere."

"And nowhere."

The nameless librarian bent down and picked up the black book.

Its blank pages were no longer empty.

Lines of silver ink spread across them on their own.

She read silently.

The more she read, the paler her face became.

The old wanderer noticed.

"What does it say?"

She closed the book immediately.

"...It should not exist."

Ashren's voice sharpened.

"What did you read?"

After a long pause, she answered.

"The Archive has found a memory..."

"...that predates the First Era."

Those words struck harder than any attack.

Ashren's expression froze.

"The First Era was the beginning."

"So we believed."

The librarian looked at Kai.

"But the Archive remembers what history forgot."

Above the city, the white-masked leader of the Veiled Court lowered her transparent sword.

"Retreat."

The masked cultivators looked at her in surprise.

"My Lady?"

"We have failed."

"The Hollow Judge has withdrawn."

She turned her gaze toward Kai.

"But this changes nothing."

"The Bearer of the Heart..."

"...will be ours."

With a wave of her hand, the Veiled Court dissolved into streams of black light, disappearing into the fractured sky.

Only silence remained.

Lyra finally reached Kai's side.

She looked at him carefully.

"You've changed."

Kai frowned.

"I don't feel different."

"You should."

She hesitated.

"When I look at you..."

"...I sometimes see someone else."

Kai didn't answer.

Because he had noticed the same thing.

In the reflection of shattered silver glass nearby, his face flickered for an instant.

Not into Ashren.

Not into the First Ascendant.

Into someone completely unknown.

A man with long white hair...

And eyes that contained neither silver nor gold—

Only endless night.

The reflection vanished before Kai could react.

The old wanderer broke the silence.

"We're out of time."

He pointed toward the distant horizon.

The violet sky above the City of Echoes was cracking.

Not from an attack.

From decay.

"This city exists outside the flow of the Eras."

"Now that Ashren has escaped..."

"...its purpose is ending."

Across the streets, the awakened memories had stopped moving.

One by one, they smiled peacefully.

Then dissolved into countless silver motes that drifted into the sky.

The City was saying goodbye.

A little girl—one of the city's oldest memories—walked toward Kai.

She could not have been more than seven years old.

She carried a tiny silver flower in her hands.

Without speaking, she placed it in Kai's palm.

Then she whispered,

"Don't forget us this time."

Before Kai could respond...

She vanished.

Only the flower remained.

The nameless librarian looked at the flower and bowed her head.

"The city's final memory."

"It chose you."

Ashren smiled faintly.

"Then Echoes has accepted its last Keeper."

Kai looked up.

"I don't understand any of this."

Ashren chuckled.

"I know."

"And that's exactly why there's still hope."

Suddenly—

The second heartbeat echoed again.

THUMP.

This time, everyone heard it.

The mountains surrounding the city trembled.

The sky darkened.

The silver flower in Kai's hand bloomed.

Its petals unfolded into a delicate compass made of light.

Instead of pointing north...

It pointed upward.

Far beyond the heavens.

The old wanderer's smile disappeared.

"It found the path."

Kai looked at him.

"What path?"

The old man took a slow breath.

"The road no living being has walked..."

"...since before the First Era."

Ashren whispered the forgotten title with unmistakable gravity.

"The Stairway Beyond Heaven."

The compass of light rose from Kai's hand.

It projected a shimmering staircase into the sky.

Each step formed from silver flame.

Each higher than the last.

The staircase pierced the clouds...

Crossed the shattered heavens...

And disappeared into the endless darkness beyond.

As everyone stared upward...

A lone figure appeared at the very top.

Too distant to see clearly.

Standing perfectly still.

Watching them.

Then the figure slowly raised one hand...

...and beckoned Kai to climb.
