Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty

Production on Fractured Light began two weeks later.

Emma arrived on set at 5 AM, her stomach a knot of nerves and excitement. The soundstage was chaos, crew members running cables, lighting technicians adjusting rigs, the director, a woman named Elena Vasquez, shouting instructions through a megaphone.

Daniel Cross met her at the entrance. "You're early."

"I wanted to see how everything works."

Daniel smiled. "Most actors show up when they're called. They don't care about the process."

"I'm not most actors."

"No, you're not." He led her through the chaos, pointing out the different departments and introducing her to the crew. "Elena is tough. She doesn't care who you're married to. If you can't deliver, she'll replace you."

"I don't intend to be replaced."

Elena Vasquez was a small woman with sharp features and sharper eyes. She looked Emma up and down, unimpressed.

"You're the fiancée," she said.

"I'm the actress."

Elena's eyebrow rose. "We'll see."

The first scene was a confrontation. Maya, Emma's character, discovers her husband's betrayal and confronts him in their penthouse apartment. The scene was raw, emotional, and demanding.

"Action!" Elena shouted.

Emma became Maya.

She wasn't acting… she was remembering. Every moment Juliette had stolen from her. Every lie Evelyn had told. Every silent scream she had buried for sixteen years. It poured out of her like blood from a wound.

When Elena yelled "Cut!" the soundstage was silent.

Emma blinked, coming back to herself. Her hands were shaking. Her cheeks were wet.

Elena stared at her. Then she smiled… a real smile, not the sharp assessment from before.

"Again," she said. "And this time, make me believe it."

They shot the scene seven times. Each time, Emma found something new… a gesture, a breath, a flicker of pain that made the character real. By the end, she was exhausted, but Elena was satisfied.

"You're not what I expected," Elena said as they broke for lunch.

"What did you expect?"

"Some rich man's wife playing pretend." She handed Emma a bottle of water. "You're the real deal."

Emma took the water, her hands still trembling. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me. Just be ready for tomorrow. It gets harder from here."
