Chapter 1 - After The Silence of Graduation

The hall was still echoing with applause.

Caps were in the air, laughter filled every corner, and the smell of fresh flowers mixed with celebration. It was the day of graduation — the day when everything was supposed to feel like a beginning.

But for Mahi and Kriti, it felt strangely empty.

They stood near the edge of the crowd, holding their certificates, watching others celebrate with families. People were taking photos, hugging, crying — living moments they were supposed to feel too.

But their parents weren't there.

Ayaan stood a little away from them.

Not in the crowd.

Not smiling much.

Just watching.

He was the only family they had now.

A young CEO, already carrying the weight of a company and two lives that suddenly became his responsibility years ago. He didn't show emotion easily, but his presence alone made people step aside. Calm. Controlled. Unshakable.

When Kriti ran toward him first, she smiled brightly.

"Uncle, look! I passed!"

Ayaan glanced at her certificate, then at her face.

"Good," he said simply. "Now it's time to stop celebrating and start living."

Kriti's smile faded slightly.

"…Start living?"

He didn't explain.

He never did.

Mahi walked up slowly behind her sister, holding her certificate closer than necessary. Her expression was quieter, unreadable. She looked at Ayaan for a moment, then looked away.

Ayaan noticed everything.

He always did.

"You both are graduated now," he said. "No more excuses. No more waiting."

Kriti blinked. "What do you mean?"

Ayaan turned slightly, his voice firm but calm.

"Find work."

The words landed like a final stamp.

No celebration. No delay. No softness.

Just reality.

Kriti's face changed instantly.

"Work? But—"

"You're adults now," Ayaan interrupted. "I won't treat you like children anymore."

A silence followed.

Even the noise of the hall felt distant now.

Mahi finally spoke, softly.

"…We can take some time."

Ayaan's eyes shifted to her.

A pause.

"No," he said. "Time creates comfort. Comfort creates laziness."

That was it.

No argument survived after that.

Outside the hall, the evening light was fading.

Ayaan stood near the car while Kriti and Mahi followed behind him slowly. The world around them still celebrated graduation, but for them, something else had already begun.

Responsibility.

Change.

Uncertainty.

As the car door opened, Kriti looked back one last time at the building.

"Uncle…" she said quietly, "what if we don't find anything?"

Ayaan didn't look at her immediately.

He finally said:

"Then you'll learn how to survive anyway."

Inside the car, Mahi sat by the window.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Quiet.

Thinking.

Unknown even to the person sitting beside her.

Because somewhere in her mind, she wasn't just a graduate.

She was already something else.

A writer.

But no one knew that yet.

Not even Ayaan.

The car started moving.

And with it, their lives stopped being students…

…and started becoming something far more complicated.
