Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

The Aurelius Academy of Youth Heroes sat atop the Iron Cliffs like a fortress of glass and gold, a sprawling facility that looked more like a city-state than a school. Its training grounds were massive, open-air arenas lined with high-tech sensors and floating cameras, designed to capture every micro-expression of the world's elite youth.

Sasha walked through the central plaza, her boots clicking softly on the white marble. She felt like a mouse in a den of lions. To her left, a candidate with skin like obsidian was casually melting a practice dummy with his bare hands; to her right, a girl with shimmering wings was hovering thirty feet in the air, her eyes glowing with a terrifying, rhythmic light.

Because of Sasha's petite figure and her oversized blazer, many of the other candidates didn't see a rival—they saw easy prey. A group of boys from the Northern Districts huddled nearby, whispering and smiling evilly as they watched her. One made a "crushing" motion with his hand, laughing as his friends looked at Sasha's slender frame.

"You should try not to look so much like a lost kitten," a voice said softly.

Sasha jumped, turning to see a boy with neat, dark hair and thick-rimmed glasses. He held a tablet in his hand and looked remarkably calm despite the chaos. "The testers here aren't just looking for power; they're looking for weakness to exploit. My name is Kael. If I were you, I'd find a corner and stay there until the bell rings."

Sasha blinked, her naivety prompting a bright, happy smile. "Oh! Thank you, Kael. That's very kind of you to worry about me. I'm Sasha."

Beside her, Anna's eyes narrowed into icy slits. She stepped between Sasha and Kael, her posture rigid. "She doesn't need your advice, and she isn't a kitten. Move along."

Sasha pulled on Anna's sleeve. "Anna, be nice! He's just being helpful."

Anna didn't answer, her hand hovering near her waist. Her instructions from Naomi were absolute: Keep her isolated. Keep her focused. No outside influences. But before a confrontation could begin, a holographic proctor appeared in the center of the plaza.

The First Trial: The Rescue Gauntlet

"Candidates! Assemble in groups of three!" the proctor's voice boomed. "The test is simple. You have ten minutes to enter the simulation zone. You must defeat three robotic villains modeled after High-Tier threats and extract one survivor from the rubble. If the survivor is damaged, you fail. If you exceed the time, you fail."

Kael looked at Sasha and then at the terrifying aura radiating from Anna. "It seems we're a trio by default. Shall we?"

Anna gritted her teeth but nodded. As they entered the simulation—a reconstructed city block filled with smoke and twisted rebar—Anna's demeanor shifted instantly. She wasn't just a student; she was a commander. Naomi had been clear: You are the shepherd. Sasha is the lamb. Lead her until she is ready to be the wolf.

"Kael! You have the glasses and the tablet—stay back and scan for the survivor's heartbeat. Do not engage," Anna barked, her voice echoing with the authority of the Syndicate.

"Wait, I—" Kael started, but Anna cut him off with a glare that could have frozen blood.

"Sasha! Front and center," Anna commanded. "You are the heavy hitter. When the robots engage, I will draw their fire. You will hit them with your kinetic pressure. Do not overthink. Do not hesitate. Hit them until they stop moving. Do you understand?"

Sasha stood taller, her silver eyes shimmering. "I understand, Anna!"

They rounded a corner and were immediately met by three massive, humanoid robots. They were dressed in the jagged, dark armor of the "Shadow Syndicate"—ironically, the very people Sasha actually belonged to. The robots lunged, their mechanical eyes glowing red.

"Now!" Anna shouted.

Anna moved like a blur, her hands striking the first robot's joints with such precision that the metal screamed. She was a whirlwind of movement, leading the mechanical villains into a tight cluster, exactly where she wanted them. She was protecting Sasha's line of sight, her body always positioned between the danger and the girl.

"Sasha! Now! Crush them!"

Sasha stepped forward, her hands trembling but her mind fixed on Naomi's promise of pride. She felt the "cold itch" and pushed it outward. A massive, invisible weight slammed into the three robots. The ground beneath them shattered as they were driven into the concrete, their frames buckling and sparking. They weren't erased, but they were pinned like insects under a giant's boot.

"Survivor located! Under the debris to the left!" Kael shouted, impressed despite himself.

Anna didn't wait. She grabbed Sasha by the arm and pulled her toward the rubble. "Kael, lift the beam! Sasha, stabilize the structure! Move!"

Under Anna's ruthless leadership, the trio moved like a single machine. While Kael pulled the "survivor" (a lifelike android) to safety, Anna kept her eyes locked on Sasha, her hands ready to catch the girl if her power flared too brightly.

As they crossed the finish line with two minutes to spare, the proctors watched the monitors in silence. They saw a brilliant tactician in Anna and a terrifying powerhouse in the petite girl beside her.

Sasha leaned against a wall, panting, her thumb tracing the silver stone on her neck. She looked at Anna, who was already scanning the room for the next threat.

"We did it, Anna!" Sasha chirped.

Anna simply stood straight, her face a mask of stone. "We followed orders, Sasha. That is all that matters."

In the back of her mind, through the link in the necklace, Sasha felt a low, vibrating hum of satisfaction. Naomi was watching. And Naomi was pleased.
