Chapter 6 - Chapter 4: Sweet, Sweet Time for the Two of Us (2)

Well, once Valentine's Day is over, White Day—the day to return the favor—comes in a flash. But before that, Umi and I have one important thing to confirm.

The results of the final exams that conclude the school year──were being announced today.

The exams themselves were held at the end of February, and we had already gotten our papers back, so we knew our scores. All that was left was to see our ranks posted on the bulletin board.

"I used to be fine with just being in the upper ranks, but… it's nerve-wracking when you have a goal," I muttered.

"Yeah. Depending on today's ranking, it'll pretty much decide whether we can be in the same class…" Umi said. "Yuu, Nina, and Seki, too, thank you for all your help this time."

"No~ Umi, don't go~ I want to be in the same class as you too~" Amami-san wailed as she hugged Umi.

Based on the results of this exam, it was highly likely that the five of us would be placed in different classes. Umi, as usual, had gotten high scores and was certain to place in the top ten of our grade again. As for Amami-san and Nitta-san, thanks to our customary study sessions, they had avoided failing any subjects and had safely secured their promotion to the second year. However, their average scores were below the grade average, so the best friend duo of Umi and Amami-san, who had always been together, would be spending their time in separate classrooms from April.

And at this point, I was the only one who had a chance of being in the same class as Umi next year.

"By the way, Class Rep, how were your test results in the end?" Seki asked. "All the papers have been returned in our class today, so you know the average, right?"

"Well… I guess I barely managed to get above ninety…"

An average of ninety or above was a personal best for me, and I was glad that my diligent studying since the new year had paid off. But considering past data, that probably only put me around thirtieth place, so I couldn't rest easy yet. By the way, Umi's average score this time was over ninety-five, but there were still people above her. The top students could sometimes get near-perfect scores, so the top tier of our high school was not to be underestimated.

For now, the five of us left the classroom to check our ranks. As expected, everyone else was curious too, so there was a decent crowd in front of the bulletin board.

The names of the top fifty students were posted on the bulletin board, and the reactions were varied. Some grumbled about their names not being there, others puffed out their chests as if it were a matter of course, and still others, who were unrelated, were simply impressed by the top scores.

"Maki, you can't see from there, can you? Here, I'll lift you up, so come here."

"Eh? No, it's already after school, so I don't have to be in such a hurry. Besides—whoa?!"

"Here… up we go~ How's that? You can see perfectly from anywhere now, right?"

"I can certainly see better, but…"

Hoping to check my rank before things got any more embarrassing and have him put me down quickly, I scanned the ranking chart printed in large letters from right to left, starting from 50th place.

The 40s. The average score was below 90, so for now, it was confirmed that I was at least above that.

The 30s. If my name wasn't here, I'd have achieved my goal, so I carefully checked the names.

32nd, 31st, 30th.

"Maki, is your name there?"

"No, not yet. But the total scores are almost the same, so—"

Then, as I entered the 20s:

29th: Kaede Kaga

28th: Miku Nanno

27th: Maki Maehara

26th: ———

"Oh, there it is. 27th place."

I finally found my name.

Although it was a close call in terms of points, I was able to get my name firmly within the top 30, which was my goal.

"Oh, you're right! Yay, yay! Maki-kun, that's amazing!"

"Heeh, not bad, class rep."

"Ooh… Maki, that's great. You were working so hard during break times and all."

"Yeah, thanks… But, could you put me down first?"

"Ah, sorry, sorry. I got carried away."

After being gently lowered back to my original position, I received a rough round of congratulations from everyone again.

Nozomu slapped my back repeatedly, and Amami-san and Nitta-san ruffled my hair. I was more roughed up than usual, but the smiles of everyone praising me made me happy for some reason.

Then, after being thoroughly messed with by the three of them, Umi gently squeezed my hand.

"Maki, you did it. You cleared the first hurdle."

"Yeah. I can't say for sure yet, but I'm glad I was able to get into the top 30."

I had also checked Umi's rank; she was in 5th place. Umi had been working hard just like me, so I planned to celebrate properly with her later.

Today is March 13th. White Day is tomorrow, but there was a reason I wanted to give Umi her return gift today.

After watching the results announcement and taking a breather, I parted ways with Amami-san and the others and returned home with Umi. For White Day, just as Umi did for me last month, I planned to make homemade sweets, and I had already bought all the ingredients in advance.

Leading Umi by the hand, we got on the elevator of my apartment building, and I heard Umi's giggling from right behind me.

"…Ehehe."

"W-What is it, Umi, grinning like that…? Did I do something weird?"

"No, not really. But I was just thinking that you're getting pretty used to bringing me home lately~"

"Well… I guess if you do it enough times, it becomes natural to invite you over."

Indeed, considering everything up to now, Umi might be right.

Until now, when I invited Umi to hang out, I would often express my intentions indirectly, saying things like, "Do you have plans today?" or "I bought a new game yesterday." But since around Valentine's Day,

"Let's go."

"I want to be with you a little longer today."

I've been able to express my feelings straightforwardly in front of Umi.

However, this is also thanks to Umi. She basically never refuses whenever I invite her, so I can confidently invite her myself.

This is a terrible way to put it, but in front of me, Umi is a very easy girl. Of course, that's proof that she trusts me that much, so even when we're alone at home, I intend to maintain self-control.

"…Maki, I'm fine with it, you know?"

"Wh-?! Er… what do you mean by that?"

"Fufun~ Now, what could I mean?"

Teasingly, Umi pressed something soft against my arm.

In other words, she wouldn't mind if I touched delicate parts like her chest or thighs a little, but I'm really not sure what the right thing to do is.

For now, it's just kissing, but of course, I naturally have the desire to go further.

I have Umi's permission, and there was that one time I spent the night with my face buried in her chest, so as long as I don't cross the line, there shouldn't be a problem… No, maybe there is.

"…Let's just talk about that later."

"Ah, you ran away. You're such a coward, Maki."

"No, I'm just thinking about it properly. When I do it, I do it."

"Hmph. If you say so, Maki, I'll let you off the hook for today."

"Thanks for that. Come on, we're here. Once you're ready, let's bake cookies. We don't have much time today."

"Okaay… Fufu, gotcha."

"Tch… D-Don't poke my side."

While minding Umi, who was teasing me with a mischievous smile, I returned home and immediately started making cookies for White Day tomorrow.

During Valentine's Day, Umi did her best all by herself, but today, she is with me.

"Umi, we're making cocoa cookies on that side, so follow the measurements, please. Ahem… a level measuring spoonful in that bowl."

"Yes, sir~… Hey, Maki, these cookies aren't just for me. You're giving them to Yuu and Niina tomorrow too, right?"

"Yeah. That's the plan… Should I make something else just for you, Umi?"

"Ah, no. It's a lot of trouble, and I don't mean to be that selfish… but, well, since I'm your girlfriend, I was hoping you'd show me some favoritism."

The plan was to give her the same cookies, but it seems that Umi, just as she did on Valentine's Day, wants to be treated specially.

I'm sure she wasn't expecting anything in return, but as her boyfriend, I understand her desire for clear proof that she is number one.

And because I understand, I specifically invited Umi over the day before.

"…It's okay. I've prepared your share properly. But it'll take a little time, so I want you to wait until the cookies are baked."

"…Okay, I get it. I don't know what it is yet, but I'll look forward to it for a little longer."

We cut out small shapes like circles, squares, and stars with cookie cutters and put them in the oven.

As we wait, lazing around on the sofa, a sweet, appetizing smell fills the room as time goes by.

"Maki, it smells nice."

"Yeah… You know, I've loved doing this ever since I was a kid. Not just for sweets, but for cooking in general."

"The time you're waiting for it to be ready?"

I nod and continue.

"When I was little, my mom was still at home, so she often made cookies and cakes for me. She would let me taste them right after they were made, so I always looked forward to it."

When the smell gets stronger, it's a sign that it's done. Even if I was playing games or something in my room, I remember that when the smell drifted from the kitchen, I would always wait for it to be ready by my mom's side.

"Especially the freshly baked cookies are the most memorable… I like the usual cookies too, but freshly baked cookies feel sweeter and more fragrant than before they get hard, and they crumble in your mouth the moment you put them in. It feels special."

"…Could it be that you brought me here today for that?"

"What a way to put it… But, yeah. I'm planning to give these cookies to Amami-san and Nitta-san too, but my favorite, the freshly baked ones, only stay that way for so long."

Including the memories, I want Umi to know my favorite things, and if possible, I want to taste them together and share that feeling.

That was my own way of giving Umi something "special" within my means right now.

Shortly after, they were done baking. When I took the oven tray out of the range, various shapes of cookies, nicely browned and moderately puffed up, were presented before us.

They all smell great, and I can tell at a glance that they're a huge success.

"Umi, here, one special one. Be careful not to burn yourself, it's hot."

"Ah, okay… Ouch, ouch. It looks so delicious, but I might not be able to hold it without letting it cool a bit."

We both juggle the cookies in our palms like beanbags to cool them down a bit, and carefully take a bite so as not to burn ourselves.

"…How is it?"

"Yeah, it's delicious. It feels like I'm eating just the outside of some freshly baked melon bread."

"Right? Well, the outside of a melon bread is cookie dough itself, so it's only natural, I guess."

It might not be much for something I called special, but I personally think that the little bit of favoritism of letting her eat them fresh is the difference that separates a "girlfriend" from a "friend."

I want to believe that Umi, who is nibbling on a cocoa cookie next to me looking delicious, thinks so too.

If we eat too much, there won't be any left for Amami-san and the others, so we manage to hold back and pack the cooled, settled-in-flavor cookies into three bags.

Amami-san's, Nitta-san's, and Umi's shares. I'll let her sneak a taste of the fresh ones, and I'll also give her a properly packaged one.

She's my girlfriend, so I have to give her special treatment.

…Of course, it doesn't end there, but that's tomorrow.

The next morning, on White Day itself. I decided to wrap the cookies I made yesterday as a return gift for the three who gave me chocolate last month. I had already divided them into three portions yesterday, but I felt that just a transparent bag was a bit plain, so I decided to wrap them myself.

I cut the checkered wrapping paper I had at home into a suitable size with a cutter to make a bag and tied the opening with a thin string.

I've decided who to give which color to: blue for Umi, red for Amami-san, and green for Nitta-san.

The contents are the same, but separating them seems more thoughtful and scores higher (according to Emi-senpai), so I tried dividing them by the color of the furisode they wore on their New Year's shrine visit… but I wonder if anyone will notice.

As I was working silently in the quiet living room early in the morning, my mom's figure entered the living room from the bedroom with slow movements.

"─Fwaah… Oh, you're up early, Maki. It's tough being a popular guy, huh?"

"Morning, Mom. More importantly, did you buy the thing I asked for?"

"You just ignored me, didn't you… Oh, you mean the errand? It's fine. I stopped by a nearby department store during my work break yesterday and bought it for you."

What my mom took out of her work bag, which was placed on a dining table chair, was something wrapped for White Day, completely different from my makeshift job.

For what's inside, it was quite expensive, and at this point, the contents of my wallet are like a candle in the wind, but I think this was a good purchase.

Dates, clothes and other grooming, and gifts for events like these… when you try to have a proper relationship, it really does cost a fair amount of money.

Well, it's all worth it if the person you like is happy.

"…Still, one, two, three… Maki, did you get chocolate from three girls? Umi-chan is fine, but the others are the ones who were in the picture with you at Christmas, right?"

"Yeah. What I got was just a bonus, so I only prepared a decent return gift… except for Umi."

And so, I sneak "that" into the blue bag along with the cookies.

I think of Umi as more special than anyone else, and I made that clear yesterday, but I want to show it properly in the form of a gift that she is clearly different from the others.

If that puts Umi at ease, it's a small price to pay no matter how empty my wallet gets.

"I see. If you understand that, then I won't say anything… but don't you dare make Umi-chan cry, okay?"

"…Yeah, I'll do my best to make sure that doesn't happen."

I'm still immature in every way, but I hope to grow step by step from now on, whether it's in my studies, sports, or grooming.

And so, on White Day, which I had meticulously prepared for, in the classroom before morning homeroom.

Me, Umi, Amami-san, Nitta-san, and Nozomu.

After waiting for the usual five of us to arrive at school and gather, I took out the return gifts I had in my bag and placed them in front of my desk.

"Um, you three… got a minute?"

The gazes of Umi and the other two, who had noticed the three bags—blue, red, and green—lined up, all turned in that direction at once.

"Ah, hey, hey, Maki-kun! Is that, by any chance, a return gift for the chocolate?"

"Yeah. It's nothing special, but I made some cookies."

"Wow, cookies! And they're handmade by you, Maki-kun, right? I love your sweets, so I was actually kinda looking forward to this~!"

"Yay!" Amami-san, who received the red bag from me as innocently as a child, peeked inside the bag and immediately popped one, then two cookies into her mouth happily.

"Munch, munch… Mmm, they're a little less sweet, but they're very delicious. Here, Nina-chi, you try one too. These cocoa cookies are super delicious."

"Hm, let's see… They're softer and more crumbly than the ones you buy at a store, but the light texture is pretty good. Class rep, are you aiming to be a househusband in the future or something?"

"No, I'm not particularly aiming for it…"

I've been told that a lot since I started dating Umi, and it seems to come up in conversation sometimes when the three girls are talking, but in Amami-san and Nitta-san's image,

Me = Househusband

Umi = Breadwinner of the family

It seems to be that kind of family.

It's true that in terms of our current abilities, Umi is better at both academics and athletics, and I can cover all the household chores that Umi is not good at. I think we complement each other's shortcomings and are in a very well-balanced form, but actually, I can't help feeling that the roles Umi and I hope for are the opposite.

I would work hard, come home tired, and be greeted by Umi, who would gently soothe me—

"Um, Umi…"

"Tch… I-I'm fine with either way, if that's what Maki wants… or rather, I'd rather be the one to support you, Maki… maybe."

"Eh? Ah, no, that's not it. I just wanted to give you this, your return gift—"

"Heh…?"

Umi, who received the blue bag with a blank look on her face, turned redder and redder as she realized the misunderstanding she had made.

Amami-san, who immediately sensed her best friend's state, sidled up to Umi with the biggest grin possible.

"Oh my, oh my? I wonder what Umi was imagining in this situation? The return gift? Or something much further down the line?"

"...I'll hit Niina."

"No, no, why are you turning on me…? Hey, seriously, stop with the headlock…"

As the three of them started messing around again, I found myself imagining my future with Umi.

It might be getting ahead of myself, but eventually, I hope we can become a close couple like Daichi-san and Sora-san, or like my dad and mom when I was still young… No, I guess we should deepen our relationship as a couple first.

"—Hey, before that, why don't you just check what's inside? Since she's your girlfriend, maybe there's something different from ours in there?"

"Is it something like a surprise? I helped Maki make these yesterday… See, it's just the cookies we baked yesterday, and then some candy… eh? Candy?"

After the embarrassment had mostly subsided, Umi opened the bag as Nitta-san had told her to, and her expression froze as she peeked inside.

"..."

She glanced at Amami-san's bag, Nitta-san's bag, and then her own bag, before finally looking at me.

"Maki, um…"

"Yes."

"Is this something I can show everyone?"

"Well… I wasn't planning on keeping it a secret anyway."

That's right. What I had specially put in Umi's bag, separate from Amami-san's and Nitta-san's, was a certain brand of candy made especially for White Day.

Candies of various flavors, such as red, orange, purple, and yellow, were carefully placed in the bag one by one.

"I just found out about it yesterday when I looked it up… but it seems that for White Day, the gifts have different meanings depending on what you give. Cookies mean 'Let's be friends,' and marshmallows mean 'I dislike you'… I'm not very familiar with that kind of thing, so I gave Umi cookies without thinking much about it."

"So, you got worried after looking it up and asked Aunt Masaki to buy this for you?"

"Well… ah, I was originally planning to give Umi something other than cookies anyway, but I thought candy would be easy to understand."

By the way, candy means "I like you," and it seems that each candy flavor also has its own meaning.

Umi, as well as Amami-san and Nitta-san, should know about this, so although it was sudden, I immediately contacted my mom and had her buy it.

"I told Umi properly yesterday… but I thought I had to show everyone else properly too… that Asanagi Umi is more special and precious to me than anyone else."

"So you chose something so expensive on purpose?"

"Well, something like that."

"…Oh, Maki…"

Umi said that in exasperation, but she held the bag of candy to her chest as if it were precious, and her face broke into a happy smile.

It was an expense, but if Umi is happy in the end, then it's all good.

"Maki… what flavors are in this candy?"

"Let's see… strawberry, orange, grape… and I think there was apple, melon, and lemon too."

"…Greedy. But you like me that much?"

"Well, yes."

I wonder just how much I love the girl in front of me.

I love Umi more now than when I confessed to her, than when she nursed me back to health at the end of the year, than when I saw her profile as she worked hard to make chocolate on Valentine's Day.

"…I can't eat all of this by myself, so let's eat it together after school today… Just the two of us."

"Yeah… then, is my place okay again after school? Just the two of us."

"..."

Umi gave a small nod and returned to her seat behind me.

During the classes that followed, I was bothered by her constantly poking me in the back from behind, but,

(Asanagi) Bringing me to your house again

(Asanagi) maki you idiot

(Asanagi) pervert

Judging by the messages she secretly sent me, she was acting as usual, so I breathed a sigh of relief for the time being.

By the way, the three who had been listening to this exchange next to me were thoroughly exasperated.

As March drew to a close and my first year of high school was about to end, the day I had been eagerly awaiting finally arrived.

It was, of course, my first payday since I started my part-time job. For me, who had only ever received money in the form of an allowance from my parents, the joy was twofold because it was money I had earned through my own will and labor.

"Maehara-kun, here's your payslip for this month. The amount is a little small this month because it's your trial period, but I think it'll be fine from next month on."

"Yes, thank you very much."

I check the amount on the payslip with my name, Maehara Maki, printed on it. Since I worked twice a week with short hours, the amount wasn't that large, but it should still be more than enough to buy Umi's birthday present.

My part-time job earnings are to be transferred to an account in my name that my mom had prepared for me in advance.

My first passbook and cash card that I can use freely… I have to keep them carefully in my desk so I don't lose them.

As I left the office and returned to the kitchen, I met Emi-senpai, who had just returned from a delivery.

"Morning, Maki. Oh, it's your long-awaited first paycheck. Congrats. To celebrate, I'll give you these onion rings that I made too many of by mistake."

"Is it okay to just eat those…? Well, I'll take them as a treat from you, Emi-senpai."

Today, it's a three-person team of the manager, me, and Emi-senpai, but I've become able to do most things without Emi-senpai having to watch over me, so we've been working different shifts more often since this month.

Emi-senpai has helped me with not only work, but also with studying and my relationships with girls, so I'm nothing but grateful to her.

"By the way, Maki, what are you going to use your first paycheck for? Are you going to give it all to Umi-chan?"

"Not so much 'give' as, well, I'm thinking of buying her a proper present."

"Hmph, and what are you planning to buy? If her birthday is coming up, you should probably decide soon, right?"

"…Um,"

"What? Don't tell me you haven't decided yet?"

"…Yes. That's exactly the case."

I have my first paycheck, so I don't have a problem with the funds for the present, but I still haven't been able to decide what to buy with that money.

I want to give her a proper present, and I've told Umi that to make her look forward to the day, but what exactly can be called a "proper" present?

If I search on my phone or in magazines, there are countless options.

Trendy accessories, bags, watches, or a meal at an expensive restaurant… the right answer differs from person to person, so settling for something safe is one option, but is that really good enough for a gift for her first birthday as my girlfriend?

Whether I spend a lot of money or not, Umi will surely be happy with whatever I choose seriously. It was the same on White Day; she wasn't happy because it was a brand-name candy that I spent most of my allowance on, but because it was something I had chosen after struggling with it in my own way.

It's not about how much money you spend, but how much "time" you spend worrying about it for her… I feel like Umi places a particular emphasis on that.

"It's not that I don't have any ideas. But I just can't seem to make up my mind."

"Hmph, I see, you're so young. I'd be happy with anything I can cash in later, but Umi-chan doesn't seem like that type of girl… yeah, sorry. It seems I can't give you much advice this time. Please forgive your useless senior. So, as an apology, here are some french fries that were left over from a mistaken order."

"No, I'm full, so I'll just accept the sentiment."

I plan to go buy the present during spring break, but at this rate, I probably won't be able to decide even if I go into a store on the day itself.

The day after spring break started, I took a train by myself to the city center from the morning to choose a present for Umi.

Come to think of it, it's been a while since I've come to a place like this alone. Of course, I've been here several times before, but Umi was usually with me when I went to such places, so I feel strangely lonely today without her.

I was the one who asked Umi to let me go alone because I wanted to choose the present by myself.

My clothes don't look weird, do they…? Not that anyone's looking at me.

Bangs, check. Ironed spring clothes, check.

After a quick check of my appearance in the station bathroom, I exit the ticket gate and head to a commercial facility with many shops.

It's been a while since I've worn my going-out clothes, so I find myself checking my reflection in the building's glass and the windows of cars parked on the side of the road along the way. As for my clothes, I had Umi and Amami-san help me pick them out at a thrift store and other places last year, so they shouldn't be lame, but I feel like my originally plain face and body shape are holding me back.

My appearance is something I need to keep working on, but for now, I head to the general store I had looked up on my phone the day before.

It seems to be a popular spot for students around here, as it mainly sells products for women and is relatively reasonable.

"There are so many people…"

Those words escape my mouth unintentionally.

I chose to come in the morning to avoid the afternoon when it would be more crowded, but perhaps because it's the beginning of spring break, the store is full of customers.

Naturally, most of them are women. There are men, but they usually have someone who looks like their girlfriend next to them, and so far, there are almost no people like me, a guy shopping alone.

"Welcome~ are you looking for anything in particular?"

"! …Ah, I'm fine. I'm good for now."

As if to avoid the female store clerk who approached me without a sound, I quickly move to a corner of the store. I'm sure I seemed suspicious, but it'll probably be a while before I can break the habit of getting startled and wanting to run away when a friendly store clerk suddenly speaks to me.

Keeping my distance from the smiling store clerk who was swimming through the store, I decide to look at the products from a place that catches my eye for the time being.

"…Hmm."

I casually pick up a product, look at the price tag, and then tilt my head and put it back in its original place. After repeating this two or three times, a sigh escapes me.

I knew this would probably happen, but as expected, there are so many things that it's difficult to judge which one is good.

Accessories like rings and necklaces, perfume, makeup tools… I chose this store thinking of giving Umi something she could use regularly, but there are more things than I had imagined, and my head is starting to get confused.

"Choosing a present is too difficult…"

The plan was to consult my budget and find something that Umi would be happiest with within that range—I didn't think it would be easy, but at this rate, it seems like it will be more difficult than I imagined.

I'm sure Umi would be happy with whatever I come up with on my own, but I don't think it's good to be too self-centered either.

"—Hey, what about this? It's perfect for you."

"—Eh~, you think so? But if you say so, Hiro-kun, I might just buy it. How does it look? Does it suit me?"

"—Yeah, it's good. Super cute. That's my Saori for you."

"—Oh, stop it, Hiro-kun."

I can hear the conversation of a couple who are also enjoying their shopping right next to me.

Regardless of what they were talking about, they both seem to be having a lot of fun.

I regretted that maybe I should have come with Umi after all, but I can't back down now, so I have no choice but to manage this on my own this time.

Should I just be honest and ask a store clerk for advice—the moment I thought that, my shoulder was lightly tapped from behind.

"Ah, yes—mgyu."

The moment I turned around, a white, beautiful finger sank into my cheek.

In front of me was the face of a girl I knew well.

"Ehehe~ Maki-kun, you fell for it~"

"! A-Amami-san."

"Fufu, hello~ What a coincidence to see you here. Could it be that you're here to choose a birthday present for Umi too, Maki-kun?"

"Ah, yeah. You too, Amami-san?"

"Yeah. Her birthday is next week, but I have plans to go out with my family starting tomorrow, so I won't have time before Umi's birthday."

Perhaps she saw me feeling out of place and alone in an unfamiliar place. The one who came to my rescue was Amami-san, who apparently came for the same purpose.

I thought for a moment, 'What are the chances of meeting Amami-san here…' but considering the customer base of this store, it's natural that there's a high possibility that she would also come to buy a birthday present for Umi, so I reconsidered that while it was a coincidence, it wasn't that strange.

"Maki-kun, you're looking sharp today, unlike usual. I almost didn't recognize you from a distance."

"Well, it's a place like this, so I thought I should… You also look different today, Amami-san."

"You think so? It's true that I often choose cute stuff, but I also quite like casual things like this, you know? I often go to thrift stores and stuff with Umi."

Today's Amami-san is wearing a denim jacket on top, skinny pants on the bottom, and sneakers, giving her an overall casual feel. She's also meticulous with the details, like the sparkling earrings and watch.

Even with seemingly ordinary fashion, when Amami-san wears it, it somehow looks good.

"By the way, you're not with Umi today. Isn't it pretty tough for a guy to be alone in a place like this?"

"Yeah. I was just wondering what to do… Are you alone too, Amami-san?"

"No. I'm with Nina-chi. O~i, Nina-chi, over here, over here."

When Amami-san waved her hand with a loud voice, Nitta-san, who was looking for Amami-san a short distance away, noticed us and approached.

"Yo. To think the class rep would show up in such a cliché place… Ah, maybe you're lost? The toy and game section is on the next floor."

"No, this is the right place… Is the thing you're holding for a present?"

"This? Yeah. It's a cheap accessory price-wise, but well, we're students, so this is enough. If you give an expensive present to a friend, it often makes them uncomfortable."

"You might be right about that…"

The item in her hand, adorned with a 980-yen discount sticker, felt like a quintessentially Nitta-san choice. It seemed random, yet it was neither too flashy nor too plain, striking a perfectly girly balance.

 ~~

And in contrast, there was Amami-san…

"Oh! Hey, you two, isn't this adorable? It's a bit big, but it's so soft and cuddly. It might be the perfect present."

Something must have caught her eye, because before I knew it, she had drifted a short distance away, clutching a large teddy bear with a look of pure delight.

Even in Amami-san's embrace, the bear's grumpy expression remained unchanged (naturally), but I had to admit it had a certain charm. Still, I wondered if it was really a suitable gift.

Also, the price tag was surprisingly high.

"Class Rep, come on, give us your opinion. That's your role in these situations, isn't it?"

"Even if you say so…"

Ignoring Nitta-san nudging me with her elbow, I decided to take the opportunity to ask Amami-san directly.

"Amami-san, are you getting that for the present? It seems a little impulsive."

"Yep. It's like this every time for Umi's birthday. I always go with what feels right in the moment. I've considered practical, everyday things, or things she might genuinely want, but in the end, I always trust my gut."

"I see… but doesn't that backfire sometimes? Like, you give a gift and get a weird look, or they never use it."

"Of course, that happens. But I think a gift that makes me go, 'This is amazing!' conveys my feelings better than something I just think is 'okay.' Isn't that what presents are all about?"

"So you're saying the giver's feelings are important too?"

"Exactly! Especially when it's for your best friend or your partner… someone important to you."

Do you choose something based on what the recipient would like, or something that you yourself feel good about giving?

I was in the former camp, and Amami-san was in the latter, but hearing her out, I could see the merit in her way of thinking.

"This is what everyone chooses," or "this is a must-have for a present." A quick online search would yield countless opinions like that, and conversely, warnings that anything else would be annoying or over-the-top.

But is a present chosen based on those kinds of opinions truly a gift from the heart? I think that's what Amami-san was getting at.

"That's how I see it, anyway. What do you think? Did that help, Maki-kun?"

"I'm not sure… I'm still weighing my options, but I feel like I have a better sense of direction now."

"Really? That's great to hear. Ehehe."

It seemed I still had some thinking to do before making a final decision, but at least I felt like I was on the right path.

I guess this is what they mean by 'the value of friendship.'

"So, Yuu-chin, you've been holding that stuffed animal for a while. Are you getting it?"

"Eh? Oh, yeah. They have bigger and smaller ones, but this one is the most huggable, and it's cuter than the other types of stuffed animals."

"Is it cute…? Class Rep, what do you think?"

"Well, if Amami-san thinks it's cute, then isn't that what matters?"

It was a teddy bear with a sullen yet somehow endearing expression, like something out of a foreign cartoon. It wasn't my personal taste, but if Amami-san felt it was 'good,' then Umi would surely accept it with a smile.

That was probably a testament to how well they'd gotten along all this time.

"So, what about you, Class Rep?"

"I'm going to look around a bit more. You two don't have to wait for me, feel free to head home."

"Really? Well, in that case, let's go, Yuu-chin."

"Ah, okay… See you later then, Maki-kun. See you on April 3rd."

"Yeah, see you. And thanks for your help today."

"Hmph, you can call me anytime you need help again, you know? A call or a message would be fine. It wouldn't hurt you to get in touch once in a while, okay?" Nitta-san said, her cheeks puffed out slightly.

"Ah, well, that's a bit…"

"Ehh? Why? We're friends, so let's chat more. Also, you don't have to call me 'Amami-san.' Just 'Yuu' is fine, like Umi does."

"Calling you by your first name… Yeah, that might still be a hurdle."

If I get too close, the pressure from the guys in class (especially Nozomu) would be intense. I'd rather maintain a 'friend of a friend' distance with Amami-san.

Besides, if I'm overly friendly with other girls, even with no romantic intent, I'd feel bad for Umi. And that's doubly true when it's Amami-san.

"Really? Hmmm, I wonder… Anyway, let's talk about this another time. Bye-bye then, Maki-kun."

"See ya, Class Rep. See you next week."

"Yeah. See you."

After parting with Amami-san and the others, who were off to check out other stores, I once again found myself facing the glittering array of items.

I had planned to be home by noon, but at this rate, it was going to take a little longer.

Although it took time, I eventually managed to buy Umi's present. And then, it was April 3rd.

After Valentine's Day and White Day, Umi's seventeenth birthday had finally arrived.

About a week had passed since the start of spring break. The mornings were still chilly, but the light filtering through the gap in my curtains felt warm. The gloomy, cold weather from the day before had given way to a bright, spring-like cheerfulness.

You could say it was the perfect day for a birthday.

"…Yep, it's safe. It's in there."

The first thing I did after getting out of bed was check the present I had placed in my bag the night before. A small box, beautifully wrapped by the store clerk for 'my girlfriend,' accompanied by a small message card they had included as a bonus.

I had written the message myself, of course. After agonizing over it yesterday, I had settled on a safe, simple message: 'To Umi, thank you for everything.' I felt like I usually said more cheesy things, but since the present would be opened in front of everyone, I was trying to be considerate and not act too much like a lovey-dovey couple.

As I was double-checking for anything I might have forgotten, I got a call from Umi. Not a text today, but a call.

"Morning, Maki. Did you get the map I sent you earlier? I'm coming with you, so it should be fine, but I thought I'd send it just in case."

"Yeah. By the way, your house isn't that far from Amami-san's, is it?"

"That's right. Thanks to that, I've managed to avoid being tardy or absent so far. In middle school, I had to take the train, so I was late quite a few times. It was tough."

"You've worked hard, Umi."

"I know, right? Praise me more."

"Mm. Umi is amazing. I respect you."

"Nice. Worship me more… Just kidding, nihihi."

Umi's birthday celebration was held at Amami-san's house almost every year, and this year was no exception. At first, I had assumed we'd be at the Asanagi residence, but apparently, Amami-san's house was better suited for parties.

This meant it would also be my first visit to the Amami residence.

"Umi, by the way, did you tell Amami-san's family that I'm coming…?"

"Yeah. Apparently, Yuu told Aunt Eri. You'll probably be the first boy Yuu's ever brought home, just like with me… But well, compared to my family, Aunt Eri is a saint, so don't worr—huh? Mom, knock when you come into my room… Ah, no, um, that's not it. What I just said was, well, a figure of speech…"

Putting aside Umi's self-inflicted predicament of being scolded by Sora-san for her careless words…

Eri-san was the name of Amami-san's mother. I'd heard she used to be a model and had appeared on local TV, making her quite famous in her younger days.

According to Umi, she was a very kind person, but I knew I had to be on my best behavior today.

"Ah, hello, Maki-kun? This is Sora. Please take care of my little rascal today, will you? I'll be sure to give her a good talking-to right now."

"…Um, I know Umi was just being modest, but I think you're a wonderful and kind mother, Sora-san. At least, that's how I see it."

"Oh my, thank you. I know you're just flattering me, but you're the only one who says it so straightforwardly, Maki-kun. I'm very happy. I wish Umi and Riku would say kinder things to me… Right? Umi-chan?"

"Eek… Heek…"

I could faintly hear Umi's voice in the background, pleading, 'Maki, help me,' but there was nothing I could do from here. After trying my best to put in a good word for Umi, I quietly ended the call.

I made a mental note to comfort her first thing when I saw her later.

After that, I stopped by the Asanagi residence before noon, listened to Umi's lengthy complaints, and then we headed together to Amami-san's house.

Four people were gathering at Amami-san's house today, besides our host.

First, the guest of honor, Umi, and me, her attendant of sorts. Then there was Nitta-san, and also Nitori-san and Houjou-san, who had been Umi's friends since elementary school. I hadn't heard much from Umi about how things were going with those two since the Christmas party, but from the looks of it, they seemed to be on good terms.

Well, that was a relief, but the problem was the boy-to-girl ratio.

One boy to five girls (plus Amami-san's mother). It couldn't be helped given our respective circles of friends, but even with Umi by my side, I had no idea what to talk about.

I had asked my only male friend, Nozomu, if he could make it, but he had a practice match in another prefecture and couldn't even join midway. In the end, I was the sole male representative.

When I had told him about today's party, Nozomu had been extremely frustrated. I hoped it wouldn't negatively affect his pitching… but I had faith he would channel that frustration into a great performance.

"Hey, Maki."

"Hm?"

"Is the present in that bag?"

"Yeah. You'll see what it is when we get there… I don't know if you'll like it, but I put a lot of thought into it."

"Mm. Then I'll just have to wait a little longer."

And so, we walked with our fingers tightly intertwined. Along the way, Umi kept clinging to my arm, making it a bit difficult to walk, but I decided to let her have her way, at least for her birthday.

And I didn't dislike seeing her so happy.

We left the Asanagi residence earlier than planned and took our time on the ten-minute walk to our destination.

We were supposed to have been taking it slow, but while chatting with Umi, we arrived at Amami-san's house in what felt like no time at all. …I wonder why.

Putting aside how quickly time seemed to fly when I was with Umi, the matter at hand was the house we had just arrived at.

"…Hey, Umi."

"Hm?"

"Amami-san's house is pretty big, isn't it…"

"You think so? It's true that it's about one and a half times the size of mine… no, maybe a bit more… but it's still within the realm of a normal house, right? We talked about this a little before."

I had imagined the Amami residence to be about the same size as the Asanagi's, so I was taken aback by how different it was from what I had pictured.

My first impression was that the property was huge. The house itself was only slightly larger than the Asanagi residence, but the garage and garden were spacious. It looked like a Western-style house, the kind you'd see overseas.

It was hard to say if it was a 'rich person's house,' but it certainly looked like a considerable amount of money had been spent on it.

…I see, so maybe this was just barely 'normal.'

"—Woof, woof!"

"Fweh!? A-a dog!?"

As I was staring blankly at the exterior of the Amami residence, I was suddenly startled by a large dog right next to me.

I think it was a Golden Retriever. A strange sound escaped my lips out of surprise, but it was wagging its tail happily, so it didn't seem to be wary of me.

"Oh, hello there, Rocky. You're as energetic as ever."

And its name was apparently Rocky. A name befitting the protagonist of a classic movie, but the way it was panting with its mouth wide open and wagging its tail furiously also made it seem a bit goofy.

After Umi had finished stroking its head, it came over and started sniffing me.

"Um… do you want me to pet you?"

"Woof!"

"Agh…!"

I was startled again, but it wasn't barking aggressively or trying to bite. Aside from an indescribable sense of intimidation, I could tell it was a friendly dog.

…I could tell, but.

"U-Umi… I'm, uh…"

"? What's wrong, Maki? You're completely frozen."

"Well, I'm a little… no, I'm really not good with dogs…"

"Really? But he's so cute… right, Rocky?"

"Woof!"

"Agh."

With its well-groomed fur, fluffy tail, and adorable round eyes, I could see why some people would love it. But what I'm not good with, I'm not good with.

The reason was simple: when I was three or four, I visited my maternal grandparents' house and was chased around by a huge dog. I fell and got injured, which left me with a small trauma.

When I say I'm not good with dogs… I'm still okay with small dogs like Chihuahuas and Pugs. But as they get bigger, from medium to large, the memories from that time come flooding back, and I get scared.

I hadn't even stepped through the entrance yet, but I was already starting to feel a sense of apprehension about Amami-san's house.

"—Ah! Oh, Rocky, you can't do that. We have a first-time guest and you're jumping on them… I'm sorry, Maki-kun. Our dog is friendly, but he loves people so much that he doesn't know his own strength."

"No, it's okay. Don't worry about it. More importantly, thank you for having me today."

"Yuu, thanks for inviting us today. Excuse us."

"Yeah! Welcome, you two. Everyone else just got here too, and we're all ready, so come on up."

Guided by Amami-san, who greeted us with her usual bright smile, I entered her home with the star of the day, Umi.

As I took off my shoes and stepped into the entrance hall, a person with flaxen hair came out of the living room to greet us.

"Oh, a new guest. Hello."

This must be Eri-san. Her eyes and nose were just like Amami-san's. Naturally, her figure and aura were similar as well.

"Hello, Eri-obasan."

"Welcome, Umi-chan. Happy birthday. I made a lot of food today, so don't be shy, eat up, and make yourself at home."

"Yes, thank you for having me. But I feel bad for always borrowing your place like this. I don't know how to thank you… You even went out of your way to cook. Preparing everything must have been a lot of work."

"It's fine. Umi-chan, you're like a daughter to me too… Could it be that the boy next to you is that one?"

"Yes. My name is Maehara Maki."

I stepped forward before Umi could introduce me and bowed my head. Just like the first time I went to the Asanagi residence, I was incredibly nervous.

"Hello. I'm Amami Eri. When I hear about Umi-chan from Yuu, your name has been coming up recently too, so I was curious about what kind of boy you are. A year after she started at a co-ed school, I was wondering if Yuu was finally getting interested in boys~"

"M-Mom…! I told you not to talk about that, it's embarrassing…"

"Oh, what's wrong with it? Just as I heard, he has a very kind-looking face."

Saying that, Eri-san approached me and started patting my cheeks, arms, and thighs, as if she were doing a body check.

"Hmm, I see~… Indeed, he might have the kind of face that a caring person like Umi-chan would fall for. He seems a little unreliable, but he also seems straightforward and devoted. His potential is… ah, but, his body could use a little toning up… mm, his fashion sense is so-so. I wonder if that's Umi-chan's influence."

"Eh, um…"

"Hey, Mom… I-I'm sorry, Maki-kun. This person can't shake off her old work habits. Umi was the same the first time, but she has a habit of checking new people who come to the house like this… Mom, Maki-kun is uncomfortable, so please let go of him."

"Oops, my apologies. Ohoho."

Amami-san's mother also seemed kind, but she was quite a character. She seemed to be very cheerful at heart, so having someone like her in the house must be fun. Of course, there would be times when it was annoying, like for Amami-san right now.

After the full inspection, I opened the living room door with Umi, and—

" " "Happy Birthday!" " "

With a dry pop, confetti rained down on our heads.

The ones who set off the poppers were Nitta-san, Nitori-san, and Houjou-san, who were positioned right next to the living room door.

And, a little late, Amami-san also took out a popper from her pocket and set it off.

"Umi, happy birthday. I'm so happy I get to celebrate with you again this year."

"Yuu… Yeah, me too. I'm so happy."

I was reminded of the trouble during last year's cultural festival. If even one thing had gone wrong, this gathering might not have happened. For Umi and Amami-san, this must be a deeply emotional moment.

There was a faint glint in the eyes of the two as they gently hugged each other.

"Ah, geez, you two are being unfair."

"Me too, us too~"

"Oh, what's this? I don't know what's going on, but I'll join in for now."

And then, the three who were watching jumped onto Umi and Amami-san one after another, forming one big clump of five people.

It was a heartwarming sight.

"Hey… don't all cling to me… Honestly, you guys…"

"Ahaha, it's like we're all squished together~"

Umi, showing her white teeth with an exasperated but happy smile, and Amami-san, smiling brightly like a sunflower in the center of the circle.

I couldn't exactly join a circle of only girls, so I could only watch them from the outside, but watching everyone looking so happy wasn't a bad feeling.

"Alright, alright. Okay, that's enough of the mushiness. Everyone, please bring the food and drinks to the table. I'm hungry, let's get this started."

At Eri-san's clapping signal, we all worked together to carry the dishes and platters to the large living room table.

Including Eri-san's portion, there were seven of us, but the amount of food prepared seemed to be for more than that. There was a huge pizza that made me wonder where they bought it, a whole roast chicken, and four-liter bottles of coke and milk—enough to be a small arm workout.

"Alright, we're all set. We can't fit any more on the table, so we'll get the cake from the fridge later… First, let's do presents. Okay, I'll go first. Sorry if it's a little cheap."

"Wow, a cute watch… Obasan… thank you so much, as always."

"Ah, Mom, you're so sly! Umi, from me too!"

"Yeah, yeah… what is this? It's huge, but it's so fluffy and great to hug."

"Hehen, right~? This was such a find. The moment I saw it, I thought 'this has to be the present!'"

"Yeah. It feels like your usual choice, Yuu. Thanks."

"Ehehe."

"Okay, next is from us. Manaka, if you would."

"Here you go~"

Starting with the presents from those two, everyone gave their gifts one after another. Nitta-san gave the accessory she had picked out the other day, and Nitori-san and Houjou-san gave a bouquet of flowers.

Each present was chosen with the birthday girl, Umi, in mind.

Holding a mountain of presents, Umi had a very happy smile on her face.

"Okay Umi, from me too…"

"Ah, yeah…"

The moment it was finally my turn, everyone except Umi and me suddenly moved away, creating a wide circle around us.

"Here it comes."

"Yep."

"Today's main dish?"

"How nice~"

And for some reason, they all huddled together, sending warm, watchful gazes our way.

"…Why is everyone keeping their distance?"

"Eh? Well, you know, we thought we'd be in the way when things get serious. Right, Yuu-chin?"

"Yeah. We thought you two might not be able to concentrate if we were in your line of sight. Right, Mom?"

"Well, I just went along with it because it seemed interesting… Are those two really that bad?"

"Yeah. They are. When those two get in the zone, it's amazing."

"…Well, I'm just giving her a present like everyone else…"

It's true that Umi and I tended to get lost in our own world during couple-related events like Christmas, Valentine's Day, and most recently, White Day, but that was when we had just started dating. Three months had passed since then. We had both learned to read the room.

Or rather, there was no way I would act like we do when we're alone in a house I was visiting for the first time, especially with people I had barely met like Nitori-san and Houjou-san.

"Pfft… heheh."

"…Umi, why are you laughing?"

"Hm? Hmmm, it's nothing."

As for Umi, she just giggled happily at my reaction.

Anyway, I didn't know what everyone was expecting, but I was just going to do what I had to do.

Today was Umi's day, so I just needed to focus on her.

"Okay… one more time, Umi."

"…Yeah."

"This is my birthday present for you."

I held the small box I had taken out of my bag and presented it to Umi with both hands.

"Um… Happy birthday, Umi. And, thank you for everything."

"Yeah, thank you too. Can I open this?"

"…Go ahead."

Her gaze first fell on the handwritten message card attached. After muttering 'idiot' under her breath, Umi carefully peeled off the wrapping sticker, making sure not to tear the paper.

Inside the opened box was a blue, flower-shaped hair accessory made of processed metal.

"Such a beautiful blue gradient… Is this, by any chance, a hair ornament?"

"…Yeah. The shop assistant said it's good to use with a dress for parties and things like that."

It was the one I had chosen after agonizing over it until the evening the other day.

It wasn't something for everyday use like I had initially thought. It was the exact opposite, something she might use once a year, if that.

It wasn't as easy to match with casual clothes as Nitta-san's accessory, nor could it be used as a hug pillow like Amami-san's stuffed animal.

If things went wrong, it was the type of thing that would be stored in a desk for years without being used.

But in the end, among the many candidates, this was the one I chose—an item that was scheduled to be cleared from stock soon, tucked away in a corner of the store.

"I know it's not a very practical choice for a present. But when I imagined you wearing this, I thought you would look so beautiful… so."

I had felt it ever since I saw her in a furisode on New Year's, but I think blue suits Umi very well.

Sometimes it's translucent, depending on the light, and sometimes it's so dark you can't see the bottom… just like the 'sea' (Umi), which shows various expressions depending on the time and occasion.

"So, um… that's pretty much it."

"I see, so that's why you were out so late… Hey, can I try this on now?"

"Of course… but it doesn't match your current clothes at all."

"I'll just have to use my imagination to make it work. You're good at that, right, Maki?"

"Well, I guess so."

For now, I pictured her appearance from the Christmas party and waited for Umi to put on the hair ornament.

Looking at the attached instructions, she securely fastened the ornament to her glossy black hair, then straightened her posture and turned to face me.

"Um… Maki, how is it?"

"…Yeah. It's just as I imagined."

Even more than I had imagined, the blue flower hair ornament blended perfectly with Umi's black hair. Since the ornament wasn't that big, its presence was modest, but it seemed to accentuate Umi's own brilliance.

"It's… beautiful… Umi."

I could feel everyone's eyes on me, and my cheeks grew hotter and hotter. I had said I was just giving her a present, but in the end, it felt like I was being lovey-dovey in front of everyone again.

But since Umi was waiting for my honest thoughts, I didn't want to get embarrassed and brush it off.

"…Hehe, thank you, Maki. I'll cherish this forever."

"I see. Hearing you say that makes me happy, I guess."

I thought as I looked at Umi, who was blushing all the way to her ears just like me.

…Yep, my girlfriend is cute.

"Haa… No, no, this is really something… Yuu, you have to watch this all the time? How can you stand it~ If I were in your shoes, I would have sent these two off to some deserted island long ago."

"Ahaha… but that's just proof of how close they are. And I'm happy to see Umi looking so happy."

"Hey everyone, isn't it kind of hot in this room because of the Class Rep and Asanagi? Should I turn on the air conditioner? Maybe set it to 16 degrees."

"N-no way, that Umi-chan has come this far…"

"Oh my. Hmm, so this is what they call a maiden in love~"

After that, I tried to get through the party by focusing on the food and cake, but the teasing and barrage of questions from the girls other than Umi never stopped.

Gatherings like this were fun in their own way, but I was reaching my limit and wanted it to end soon.

"Hey, Umi."

"What?"

"You don't have to… wear that anymore."

"Mmm. I'll keep it on a little longer."

"I see. Well then… it's fine if you leave it on."

"Yeah. …Hey, Maki."

"Hm?"

"…Does this look good on me?"

"…I just told you."

"I want to hear it one more time."

"Ehh… well, but look, everyone's watching…"

"One more time."

"Ugh…"

It was great that she liked it, but the five of them were still staring with smirks on their faces.

No, but today was Umi's birthday.

So, as I decided today, I'll let her be as spoiled as she wants.

"…I-it looks good on you, and I think it's beautiful."

"Hehe… thanks, Maki."

Saying that, Umi snuggled up right against my arm.

I was as happy as could be that Umi was so pleased, but at this rate, I was going to die of embarrassment.
