Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14 - WHAT ARE YOU

Kaguren didn't sit.

Neither did Tetsuo.

"Your father," he began.

"Was a demon."

Tetsuo said nothing.

"Not a stray," Kaguren continued.

"Something considerably more significant."

Silence.

"The hunters who came that night weren't Order exorcists."

Tetsuo looked at him.

"Someone sent them specifically for your family."

"An organization."

"One that knew what your father was."

"And what you would eventually become."

"What I would become," Tetsuo repeated quietly.

Kaguren looked at him directly.

"You are your father's son."

Pause.

"Which means you are not entirely human."

Tetsuo stood with that.

Turned it over.

Thought about the fog.

The voice.

The slit pupils.

Three months he couldn't account for.

A demon prince who shrieked before he even moved.

*Confirmed.*

He exhaled once.

"The fog," he said.

Kaguren nodded.

"Is it—"

"Yes."

Tetsuo pressed two fingers against his chest.

One beat.

Normal.

"Does it have a name."

Kaguren chose his next words carefully.

The way you handled something with weight.

"Yes," he said.

He looked at Tetsuo.

"Its name is—"

.

Tetsuo walked out.

Closed the door.

Stood in the corridor.

Skull was there.

Arms folded.

Mask forward.

He hadn't been there going in.

They looked at each other.

No words.

No gesture.

Just two people standing in the same corridor with the same information between them.

*Now you understand.*

Tetsuo held his gaze.

Then walked.

.

They were behind the scaffolding.

All four of them.

Like they'd been waiting.

He stood in front of them.

"There's something I need to tell you," he said.

Nobody spoke.

"I'm not—"

"Human?" Ren said.

Tetsuo stared at him.

"We know," Amara said.

Cecil turned a page.

"Since the evaluation," she said.

"...How."

"The exorcists in the chamber," Amara said.

"When you held the blade to the Paladin's throat."

"They said you shouldn't exist."

"Then you asked Cecil about purple fog," Ren added.

Cecil didn't look up.

"That confirmed it."

Tetsuo looked at all three of them.

Known from almost the beginning.

Trained with him.

Fought beside him.

Sat beside his bed for three months.

Without a word.

Without leaving.

Something moved in his chest.

Slow.

Unfamiliar.

And for the first time—

he smiled.

Not the dangerous kind.

A real one.

The group went completely still.

Amara blinked.

Cecil looked up from her book.

Ren stared.

Four full seconds of silence.

Then—

"THREE MONTHS."

Ren pointed at him.

"He never smiled when we almost died in the desert."

"Never smiled when Skull took his head off."

He turned fully.

Deadly serious.

"Did sleeping that long reset your brain?"

"Medically."

"Scientifically."

"In any language."

"I take it back," Tetsuo said flatly.

"You can't take back a smile."

"It happened."

He pointed at Cecil.

"She saw it."

Cecil looked down immediately.

"I saw nothing."

"SHE'S LYING—"

"I saw nothing."

Amara put her hand over her face.

Tetsuo looked away before it came back.

He wasn't giving Ren the satisfaction.

.

Later.

Floor instead of bed.

Back against cold stone.

He turned everything over slowly.

His father.

The organization.

The name Kaguren spoke quietly.

Like it deserved to be handled carefully.

Two missions now.

Find the organization.

Understand what lived inside him.

Understand the name.

Forward, he thought.

Always forward.

.

Two floors below—

the painting held its stillness.

Two presences regarded each other briefly.

The painting.

And the fog.

One smiled first.

Then the other.

*"FOOLS."*

*"JUST AS WE PREDICTED.*"
