Chapter 14 - THE PREDATOR'S METRONOME

CHAPTER 14: THE PREDATOR'S METRONOME

The air didn't scream. It shattered.

Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez moved. Not with technique. With velocity. A blue blur tearing through the fractured corridor. Zangetsu didn't need to be drawn. Ichigo Kurosaki felt the impact in his ribs before the dust settled. Concrete pulverized. Rukia Kuchiki was already moving, not backward, but diagonal. Her steps precise, cutting angles. Sasuke Uchiha didn't blink. Sharingan tracked the trajectory. Rinnegan mapped the pressure waves.

FIELD PROTOCOL: PREDATOR ENGAGEMENT. NO RESTRAINTS.

Grimmjow's claws raked the ground, carving trenches that sparked against hybrid stone. He didn't aim for kills. He aimed for reaction. A feint left. A strike right. Rukia parried, boots sliding, zanpakutō ringing against bone-hard knuckles. The impact vibrated up her arms. Not pain. Data. The system was logging her guard stability.

Sasuke stepped in.  Chidori.  Lightning met claw. Sparks blinded the corridor. The impact didn't push Grimmjow back. It anchored him. He laughed, a raw, grinding sound. "Too slow!" He feinted high, dropped low. Rukia barely twisted, his claws grazing her shoulder guard. She didn't retreat. She flowed.  Some no mai, Tsukishiro.  Ice erupted from the ground, not to trap, but to corral. Forcing his next step into a predictable arc.

Grimmjow didn't dodge the ice. He shattered it with a single backhand, sending shards like shrapnel. Sasuke intercepted the debris with a  Fire Style: Great Fireball.  The blast hit Grimmjow's shoulder, singing fur, drawing blood. Grimmjow didn't flinch. He inhaled. Spiritual pressure spiked.  Cero.  Not aimed at them. Aimed at the ceiling. Structural collapse. Tactical denial.

Dust rained. Alarms in the comm seal. Kakashi Hatake's voice cut through the static: "He's not fighting you. He's fighting the environment. Using destruction to force movement patterns. Log it."

Naruto Uzumaki's voice, tight: "Threshold just jumped. 0.62%. The system's logging combat efficiency as data."

Ichigo's grip tightened. "Then we stop giving it clean data."

Rukia and Sasuke exchanged a glance. No words. They shifted.

Rukia dropped low.  Hado #4: Byakurai.  Not to hit. To illuminate. The blue flash cut through dust, revealing Grimmjow's next vector. Sasuke didn't chase. He waited. When Grimmjow lunged, Sasuke sidestepped,  Substitution Jutsu  swapping with a fractured pillar, appearing behind him.  Chidori Sharp Spear.  Not to pierce. To graze. A shallow cut along the spine. Grimmjow roared, spun, but Rukia was already there.  Bakudo #61: Rikujokoro.  Six rods of light pinned him. Not for long. Grimmjow's pressure shattered them in three seconds. But three seconds was enough.

Sasuke's  Amaterasu  ignited on the wounded shoulder. Black flames. Unquenchable.

Grimmjow howled, not in pain, but in recognition. He tore the flaming flesh away, spiritual pressure flaring to cauterize. The severed tissue didn't hit the ground. It dissolved into silver mist, siphoned upward into the fractured ceiling.

THRESHOLD: +0.03%. BIOMASS RECYCLED. COMBAT SYNERGY LOGGED.

Grimmjow stepped back. Breathing hard. Eyes locked on them. Not with rage. With calculation.

"You fight like a pack," he rasped, wiping blood. "Not like warriors. Like components."

He turned. Didn't run. Walked into the gray haze, leaving black smolder and a trail of blood that sizzled on the stone. The corridor stabilized. Dust settled. The harmonic hum returned, softer now. Adjusted.

Kakashi exhaled. "He wasn't testing strength. He was testing coordination. The system wanted to see how alliances function under pressure."

Byakuya Kuchiki sheathed Senbonzakura. "And it got its answer. Which means the next unit won't be feral. It will be precise."

Naruto looked at the smoldering trail. "They're learning how we fight together. So they can break us apart."

Ichigo's jaw tightened. "Then we give them a pattern they can't predict."

The wind shifted. Carrying the scent of ozone and burnt fur.

NARRATIVE DEVIATION: ACCEPTED. DEPLOYING TACTICAL COUNTER-UNITS. BRACE.

The war wasn't just being harvested.

It was being reverse-engineered.

And the prey had just become the architects.
