Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Final Session

Chapter 23: Final Session

The Guide arrived precisely at midnight.

Same Council robes. Same clipboard. Same neutral expression that revealed nothing and everything. But something was different — a tension in her shoulders, a carefulness in her movements that suggested this visit mattered more than the others.

"Final session," she announced, setting her materials on the fancy room's table. "Unless irregularities are found."

"I may have found some irregularities."

She looked up. Our eyes met.

"Did you."

We both knew the game we were playing. She'd manufactured irregularities to extend the audit. I'd manufactured irregularities to give her reasons to return. Neither of us had acknowledged what we were doing or why.

"The nightclub project," I said. "Nadja's planning to use the old Council building as a venue. I've been reviewing the documentation and it seems like that kind of renovation would require a Council compliance review."

"It would." The Guide's pen didn't move. "A comprehensive one. Multiple site assessments. Ongoing oversight throughout construction."

"And who would oversee something like that?"

"Someone with appropriate administrative authority." Her eyes stayed on mine. "Someone familiar with the household's compliance history."

"Someone like you."

"Someone like me."

The silence stretched between us, heavy with things neither of us was saying.

"I'll schedule a preliminary site assessment," she said finally. "For next week."

"That would be helpful."

"It would." She made a note on her clipboard — slow, deliberate, giving me time to watch her write. "The audit, however, is technically complete. This session is for final review only."

"Then let's review."

We worked through the remaining documentation with professional efficiency.

The household was rated "Marginally Compliant" — better than I'd expected, given the violations we'd catalogued. The Guide's recommendations were thorough but achievable. The paperwork was impeccable.

At 3 AM, she gathered her materials.

"Thank you," she said. "For your assistance throughout this process."

"It was educational."

"Was it?" Something flickered in her expression. "I found it... unexpectedly tolerable."

I walked her to the door again. The unnecessary gesture that she permitted.

"The preliminary site assessment," I said. "You'll need someone familiar with Nadja's vision for the project."

"I will."

"I could make myself available."

"That would be convenient." She paused at the threshold. "Arthur."

"Yes?"

"I enjoyed... this." Her voice was careful, precise. "The audit sessions. The documentation review. The..." She stopped. Started again. "The company."

"So did I."

She nodded once, sharply, and teleported away.

I stood in the empty doorway, heart beating faster than the conversation warranted, until Nadja found me and demanded to know what "more paperwork vampire" wanted now.

"She's coming back," I told Nadja in the kitchen. "For the nightclub compliance review."

"More auditing?" Nadja's expression soured. "More forms? More regulations?"

"More legitimacy." I pulled out my research notes — the ones she'd promoted me for. "The Council's approval makes investors confident. Their oversight means nobody can challenge the venue's legality. And The Guide specifically will ensure the paperwork is unassailable."

Nadja considered this.

"She is very thorough," she admitted.

"She's the best at what she does."

"And you are working with her to make my nightclub happen?"

"That's the plan."

Nadja's expression shifted to something almost approving. She pulled out a floor plan sketch and made a notation in one corner: "NO AUDITORS ALLOWED (except the boring one, she can sit here)."

After she left, I found the card The Guide had left on the audit files.

Her handwriting, precise and ancient: "Preliminary assessment — next week. I will arrive at midnight."

She'd written it before I suggested the nightclub angle.

She'd planned to come back before I gave her a reason.
