Chapter 169 - The War Begins, An Ominous Premonition

Chapter 169: The War Begins, An Ominous Premonition

As expected, a truly rational mind could always pierce through the fog of war to grasp the core of a situation.

Stelle nodded, a look of deep appreciation crossing her features as she looked across the war room. "It is indeed highly suspicious. But regardless of what shadows they are chasing in the dark, our most urgent task is locking down the borders. I suggest the three of you mobilize your respective divisions immediately. Intercept their vanguard well outside our territorial lines."

Hiruzen Sarutobi took a slow drag from his pipe, the glowing embers casting harsh shadows over his face. He exhaled a thick plume of smoke and nodded in firm agreement.

"Exactly," Hiruzen rumbled, his voice carrying the steady weight of a commander. "No matter what grand conspiracy they are weaving, all schemes shatter in the face of absolute power. We halt their advance first. Once their plot is dragged into the light and Stelle takes the field, their momentum will break."

Danzo leaned over the massive wooden sand table, his lone visible eye narrowing as he tapped a weathered finger against the western dunes.

"And what of the Land of Wind?" Danzo demanded, his tone sharp with inherent distrust. "They are supposedly our allies. After all the resources and leniency they have bled from Konoha over the years, shouldn't they be deploying troops to help us crush the Land of Earth?"

Stelle stared down at the miniature dunes and painted valleys for a long, quiet moment. She reached out, pressing a slender finger against a specific canyon near the border. "Leave the Land of Wind's defensive line to Sakumo. Have him lead his elite corps to lie in wait along the perimeter. We must prepare for a sudden knife in the back from Sunagakure."

Uchiha Kagami blinked, his head snapping up in surprise. "Did you discover something, Stelle?"

Her expression darkened, carrying the heavy, burdened look of a leader bearing terrible secrets. "Yes. Two months ago, my communication lines with Kazushi went completely dead. I suspect a violent shift in the Land of Wind's upper leadership."

Orders flew from the Hokage's office. Konoha mobilized its vast military machine in record time, bracing for the grueling reality of a four-front war.

After years of fragile, bleeding peace, the Second Shinobi World War had officially begun.

On the night before the vanguard's departure, Stelle slipped into the quiet, isolated grounds of the Uchiha Clan. She bypassed the regular patrols and broke the heavy seals on Uchiha Madara's old courtyard—a forbidden zone that had gathered dust for years, untouched by anyone out of sheer reverence and lingering terror.

When she emerged, she summoned her three commanders.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Three massive, heavy wooden crates slammed onto the floorboards before them, kicking up a cloud of dust. The lids were thrown open, revealing hundreds of densely packed Medical Ninjutsu scrolls.

"This is everything," Stelle said, wiping a smudge of dust from her cheek. "Take them. Divide the inventory evenly and distribute a batch to the medical corps on each of the four fronts."

Hiruzen, Danzo, and Kagami stood frozen, staring at the sheer mountain of medical knowledge in absolute shock. When Senju Tobirama was still alive, Konoha's entire inventory of mass-produced medical scrolls had been notoriously limited. Over the years, the village had burned through the remaining stock for research and emergencies.

None of them could fathom how Stelle had just casually dug up a small fortune's worth of them from a dead man's house.

"You know how it is," Stelle sighed, her eyes softening with perfectly manufactured nostalgia. "My Master was always paranoid about my safety. He secretly hoarded all of these just for me."

She spun the lie with the effortless grace of a seasoned con artist. Since the dead couldn't exactly rise from the grave to object, she could rewrite history however she pleased.

"The Clan Leader didn't even know how to craft medical scrolls," Kagami pointed out, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. He had personally helped Stelle clean Madara's house countless times in their youth. How on earth had he missed three giant crates of military-grade supplies? "Where did he even get so many?"

Stelle offered a casual shrug. "Master said he looted them from Teacher Tobirama."

Kagami choked on his own breath. "That... that is still a mathematically impossible amount."

"Well, he also looted a few from the Senju predecessors who originally developed the sealing formulas," Stelle continued, her face a mask of absolute, unblinking sincerity. "Apparently, they were on really good terms, so Master just casually snatched her entire life's inventory."

She didn't even twitch.

"The Second Hokage truly went to unimaginable lengths for you," Danzo muttered, his visible eye burning with raw, unfiltered jealousy as he stared at the crates. "To secretly stockpile such a vast fortune of medical scrolls for your use alone..."

Without waiting for further explanation, Danzo immediately barked orders at the waiting Shimura clan members to haul the crates away before anyone could change their minds.

Following the formal declarations of war from the three great nations, Jiraiya—who had been operating deep in the Land of Rain—was urgently recalled. Stelle wasted no time, immediately reassigning him back to the Ame front alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru to form a solid wall against Hanzo of the Salamander.

With the major pieces set on the board, Stelle thought she could finally breathe. She hadn't accounted for Hiruko throwing a spectacular tantrum.

He stormed into her office, slamming his hands on her desk, demanding to be deployed to the front lines. His reasoning was infuriatingly simple: Orochimaru was going.

In Hiruko's mind, they were both big shots at the Research Facility. One was the Director, the other the Vice Director. If Orochimaru went to war and he stayed behind, wouldn't he look like a cowardly, useless desk-jockey?

"Hiruko," Stelle sighed, rubbing her temples. "You are a researcher. Your value lies here, safe within Konoha's walls. Why must you throw yourself into a meat grinder?"

"Because Orochimaru is going! So I'm going too!" Hiruko stepped around the desk, grabbing her sleeve and tugging it like a petulant child. "Hokage-sama, please! Let me go to the battlefield! Let me shine for Konoha!"

Despite his age, Hiruko still acted entirely on impulse whenever his inferiority complex flared up. He stared at her with wide, pleading eyes.

Stelle suppressed a groan. She truly couldn't comprehend why Hiruko insisted on measuring himself against Orochimaru. Orochimaru was a terrifying all-rounder, a once-in-a-generation genius who excelled in every conceivable shinobi art. Just because Orochimaru spent his days buried in lab reports didn't diminish his lethal combat prowess. If the Sannin were unleashed on a battlefield right now, it would be a bloodbath.

Hiruko, conversely, was a highly specialized genius. Brilliant with a scalpel and a microscope, but painfully mediocre in a firefight. His raw combat strength hovered around that of an ordinary Jonin. While he wouldn't be immediate cannon fodder, a single stroke of bad luck against an Iwa heavy-hitter would leave him as a smear on the rocks.

Losing his brilliant mind to a stray kunai would be a catastrophic loss for Konoha's R&D department.

But Hiruko's jaw was set. His attitude was unyielding. Stelle knew that if she locked him in the village, the idiot would just sneak out and get himself killed in the wilderness.

Choosing the safest poison, she assigned Hiruko to the Land of Water front—and dumped the headache squarely into Danzo's lap.

As Konoha's Finance Minister, Danzo absolutely adored Hiruko and Orochimaru. They were his golden geese, printing money and technological advancements for his black-ops budget. Danzo would sooner throw himself on an explosive tag than let his primary money-maker die in a ditch.

Danzo, of course, had not expected Stelle to toss a fragile, highly valuable researcher into his war camp. The moment the orders came down, Danzo made a ruthless internal decision: the second they arrived at the Kiri front, he would arrange for his current Logistics Head to suffer a 'minor, unfortunate accident,' forcing Hiruko to take over the completely safe, heavily guarded logistics tent in the rear.

The army marched out in massive columns, the thundering of thousands of boots shaking the village gates.

Just before his division was scheduled to depart, Uchiha Kagami requested a private audience with Stelle.

The Hokage's office was quiet, the frantic energy of the day finally settling. Stelle pulled a dusty bottle of wine from her bottom drawer—a rare gesture.

"Ever since I got blackout drunk that last time, I haven't dared to touch a single drop of alcohol. I couldn't risk the village suffering an accident while I was compromised," Stelle said softly, pouring the rich amber liquid into two small ceramic cups. "But tonight, I am drinking specifically to see you off. Come. Cheers."

She raised her cup, the ceramic clinking softly against Kagami's.

Kagami downed the wine in a single, smooth motion, but his dark eyes remained shadowed. "I originally had a thousand things I wanted to say to you tonight. But sitting here, looking at you... I suddenly don't know where to begin."

"Are you worried about the front lines?" Stelle asked, her gaze turning sharp and observant.

Kagami's brow pulled into a tight knot. A heavy, suffocating tension radiated from his shoulders.

"I just feel... incredibly uneasy," he murmured, staring down at his empty cup. "As if something particularly terrible is waiting in the dark."

He had spent the last three nights running through every tactical disaster, every ambush scenario, and every logistical failure that could occur on the battlefield. Yet, none of those logical fears accounted for the cold dread settling in his stomach.

If it was merely his own death approaching, he wouldn't care. He had made peace with dying a long time ago. As long as his blood bought safety for Konoha—and for the woman sitting across from him—he would welcome the reaper with open arms.

Stelle reached over, quietly refilling his cup.

She understood the crushing weight of his thoughts. War was a blind beast. No one ever truly knew if they would wake up to see tomorrow's sunrise, or if a stray explosive tag would end their story in the mud.

"Whether it was Teacher Izuna or Teacher Tobirama, they already walked this path and set the ultimate example for us," Stelle said, her voice dropping to a gentle, steady cadence. "We are no longer the frightened children hiding behind our teachers' cloaks. Now, it is our turn to stand as the shield. We have to block the wind and rain for the next generation."

She pushed her chair back and walked to the massive window, her eyes locking onto the distant, stone-carved faces of the Hokage Monument. The village below was a sea of flickering lanterns. After a long moment, she turned back, raising her glass to the Uchiha who had stood by her side since childhood.

"Don't worry, Kagami. You have me," she promised, her voice laced with absolute, unshakeable conviction. "I will never let anything happen to you. And I will never let the Uchiha Clan fall."

Kagami offered a sad, quiet smile. He didn't know how many times he had heard her make that exact promise. She had said it when they were bruised and bleeding children, and she was still saying it now, bearing the crown of the Hokage.

He let out a soft, fond sigh.

"Stelle... just as you said, we've grown up." Kagami stood, stepping into the moonlight filtering through the window. "Occasionally, you are allowed to take those heavy burdens off your shoulders and entrust them to me. I will protect everyone, too."

Stelle's lips curved into a genuine, brilliant smile. "Yes. Kagami is a very, very reliable teammate. Let's survive this together."
