the tension in the barn reaches a breaking point. The silence is finally broken not by words, but by the sound of something familiar—and something horrific.
1. The Young Scouts' Log (The CMC's Joint Journal)
Entry #1: Barn Corner
Applejack and Rarity and Dash are all writing, so we decided to start one too. Apple Bloom found some old ledger paper in a crate of cider.
Everything is scary. The noises outside sound like cats fighting, but bigger. Much bigger. Rainbow Dash keeps staring out the window and she looks... small. We've never seen Dash look small before. We tried to ask her to play a game of "I Spy" to cheer her up, but she just patted Scootaloo on the head without looking and said, "Not now, kid. I'm on watch."
She's being a hero, but we just want our big sister back. Applejack is really sad too, even if she's trying to be "Earth Pony Strong." We're staying brave, though. We have to. If the grown-ups see us being brave, maybe they won't feel like they have to carry everything.
2. From the "Chronicles of Gracious Resilience" (Rarity's Ledger)
Midnight. The air is stifling.
The scratching has started on the north wall. It's a rhythmic, dull sound—not hooves, but something softer. Fleshy. It's a Stage Three. I can tell because the smell of ozone and wet fur is drifting through the cracks in the wood.
Rainbow Dash is hyper-ventilating. I can hear it from across the barn. She's gripped her pen so hard it snapped, and now she's just staring at the ink on her hooves like it's blood. She keeps whispering, "I should have been there. I should have been there."
I walked over and draped my best faux-fur throw over her shoulders. I didn't say anything—I know she'd just argue—but I felt her lean into me for just a second. She's so brittle right now. One wrong word and she'll shatter. We need to get her out of this barn. Not because it's safe out there, but because she's trapped in her own head in here.
3. From the "Farm Operations & Emergency Log" (Applejack's Journal)
Night. North wall is compromised.
It's Saffron. Or what was Saffron. She's fused with her apprentice, and the two of 'em are just a mess of rainbow-stained fur and extra joints. They're Stage Three. They can't talk, they just make this low, vibrating hum that shakes the floorboards.
Dash saw the rainbow paint on their muzzles. She turned white as a sheet. She thinks it's a sign. She thinks the universe is throwing her old pranks back in her face. I had to grab her by the shoulders to keep her from flyin' right out the window to "settle it."
"Dash, look at me!" I told her. "That ain't paint from a cookie. That's just a pony who was paintin' when the world went sideways. It ain't your fault."
She just looked at me with those big, teary eyes and said, "Then why does it look like my colors, AJ? Why does the monster look like me?"
I didn't have an answer for that.
4. From the "Surviving the Convergence" (Rainbow Dash's Journal)
It's her. Saffron.
She's right outside. I can see the rainbow muzzle through the gap in the planks. It's mocking me. It looks exactly like the prank. Every time she hits the wall, it sounds like she's screaming my name, even though I know Stage Threes can't talk.
Applejack tried to comfort me. She's being so nice, and it makes me feel even worse. Why aren't they shouting at me? Why aren't they telling me I'm a failure? I let the Element of Magic turn into a tree-root monster. I let the town melt.
I looked at the CMC. They're writing in their little book. They look so small. If a Stage Four comes—and I know it will, it'll probably be a giant, multi-headed beast that never sleeps—I won't be able to stop it. I'm not a hero. I'm just a fast pony who wasn't fast enough when it mattered.
I'm going to wait until they fall asleep. I'll slip out. If I can draw Saffron and the others away from the farm, maybe AJ and Rarity can get the kids to the Everfree. It's the only way. I have to be the distraction. I have to be the one who goes into the dark.
The Scene: The Breaking Point
The scratching on the wall stops. For a moment, there is total silence. Then, a soft, wet thud hits the window.
A rainbow-colored hoof, dripping with wet acrylic paint, smears across the glass. Rainbow Dash lets out a strangled sob and collapses against the wall, her hooves over her ears.
"Dash, sugar cube, please," Applejack whispers, kneeling beside her.
"I can't do it, AJ," Dash chokes out. "I'm the reason they're like that. I'm the reason the rainbow is scary now."
Rarity moves in, joining them on the floor, ignoring the dust on her mane. The CMC creep over too, forming a small circle of warmth in the middle of the cold, dark barn.
"We're still here," Scootaloo says firmly, grabbing Dash's hoof. "And you're still the fastest. You're gonna get us out of this. You always do."
Rainbow looks at them—really looks at them—and for the first time in days, the "Identity Horror" of the infection feels a little further away. But outside, the Stage Three hums louder, waiting for the light to fade.
