Chapter 303: What the Shadows Send Back
Kaelen was a man who did not exist on any official registry in Bastion Nine.
He sat perfectly still on the inclined roof of an old, decaying tenement building on the east side. The icy rain drenched his black wool cloak. He did not shiver. He did not complain.
Sirius Statanham had trained his watchers to be invisible, silent, and incredibly boring.
Kaelen was instructed to function as a human lens rather than a brain. A bad watcher tried to interpret what they saw. A bad watcher tried to guess the motives of their target and often guessed wrong. Kaelen simply recorded physical facts in the exact chronological order they occurred.
His task was to guard the narrow, muddy road. The order had been to guard the ground floor apartment of a missing junior guild clerk called Aris.
