A dying legionnaire on the ground thrust upward with a desperate, blind strike. The short sword slid effortlessly through Elian's canvas coat, slipping cleanly between his ribs and piercing his lung.
Elian froze, dropping his wrench with a dull clatter. He looked down at the hilt protruding from his chest, his eyes wide with profound, childlike confusion.
He took a single stumbling step backward, his rough hand fluttering up as if to check on the bread in his pocket, before he collapsed onto the wet cobblestones. The light faded from his eyes before his blood even began to pool in the rainwater.
