His eyes snapped open, and he remained completely motionless, scanning his immediate environment.
He was lying flat on his back on a rock-hard wooden cot. The air was thick, smelling strongly of cheap ale, stale sweat, and burning firewood.
He was inside a dingy, dimly lit room filled with rows of sleeping men. A low, rhythmic snoring echoed off the damp stone walls.
It was a military barracks.
