Chapter 100 - Breakthrough

Chapter 87 (2)

Stella turned from the stove and set another plate of pancakes on the table, her red eyes moving between her two children with the quiet wisdom of a mother who had learned long ago when to ask questions and when to let things be.

She did not press Elijah for details about Lisa, and he was grateful for that in a way he could not put into words.

The drive to Amy's school was quiet, the morning traffic flowing around them as Elijah navigated the familiar streets of the 7th District.

Amy stared out the window with her chin resting on her hand and her Black hair blowing across her face, and she did not ask any more questions about Lisa.

When he pulled up to the front gate and killed the engine, Amy opened the door and stepped out, but she paused before closing it and leaned back in through the window. "Whatever happened," she said, her voice softer than it had been at breakfast, "I hope you figure it out. You deserve to be happy, Elijah, even if you don't think you do."

She closed the door and walked through the gates without looking back, and Elijah sat there for a long moment with his hands on the wheel and his sister's words echoing in his mind.

The fight club was empty when Elijah arrived, the rows of seats vacant and the ring standing silent in the center of the space like a beast waiting to be fed.

The morning light filtered through the high windows, casting long shadows across the canvas floor, and the only sounds were the soft hum of the ventilation system and the distant noise of the city waking up outside.

The Vice Leaders were already there, gathered in a loose circle near the center of the ring where three mats had been laid out side by side.

Jack was already seated on the center mat with his legs crossed and his hands resting on his knees, his gold aura pulsing around him in slow, steady waves that matched the rhythm of his breathing.

His red eyes were closed, and his face was calm in a way that spoke of deep concentration, but he opened them when Elijah climbed through the ropes and walked across the canvas to join him.

"Took you long enough," Jack said, but there was no reproach in his voice.

Elijah sat down on the mat beside him, positioning himself so that he faced the same direction as the others, and Tristan moved from his post by the ropes to take the third mat on Elijah's other side.

Before they began, Elijah focused his attention inward and requested a status scan from the system, wanting to confirm Tristan's readiness before they attempted something that could seriously injure him if his body was not prepared.

A screen flickered in the corner of his vision, visible only to him.

[Status: Tristan]

[Cultivation: Beginner Knight Stage (Peak Stage)]

[Physical Limit: 42]

[Base Stats (Raw):]

[Strength: 42 (Physical Limit Reached)]

[Agility: 42 (Physical Limit Reached)]

[Endurance: 42 (Physical Limit Reached)]

[Defense: 42 (Physical Limit Reached)]

[Ki Enhancement: 50% (Inner Breathing Technique)]

Elijah nodded to himself, satisfied that Tristan was truly ready.

Elijah smiled,

The three of them settled into their cross-legged positions with their hands resting on their knees, their backs straight and their breathing already beginning to synchronize.

The other Vice Leaders formed a loose perimeter around them, their auras flickering in the dim light as they watched over the breakthrough attempt.

The process of breaking through to the Advanced Knight Stage was something that Elijah understood intellectually but had never experienced firsthand.

The books he had read described it as a compression of all the Ki that had been gathered throughout the Beginner stage, forcing it inward toward the heart until it collapsed under its own weight and formed a solid core that would serve as the foundation for everything that came after.

A Ki seed, as it was called, would become the center of his cultivation, producing new Ki to replenish what he used and extending his lifespan far beyond what a normal human could expect.

More importantly, it would allow his physical stats to grow beyond their current limits, pushing him toward heights that had been impossible before.

But knowing the theory and executing it were two very different things.

Elijah closed his eyes and reached inward, his awareness sinking through the layers of his body until he found the door behind his heart.

Ki he had gathered over weeks of training was there, a vast reservoir of warm energy that pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat, and he could feel it pressing against the barrier that separated him from the next stage of his journey.

The door was not locked, he realized, and it never had been. It was simply heavy, weighted down by the limitations of his physical body.

He breathed in deeply, pulling more Ki from the scattered corners of his body and adding it to the reservoir behind his heart, and then he pushed.

The resistance was immediate and overwhelming, a pressure that pushed back against him with equal force and threatened to crush the Ki he had gathered before it could coalesce into something solid.

His body trembled with the effort, his muscles tensing and his bones creaking under the strain, and he could feel sweat beading on his forehead and running down his face in thin rivulets.

The pain was significant, a deep and pervasive ache that seemed to occupy every cell of his being, but it was nothing compared to what he had already endured, and he pushed through it with a determination that surprised even himself.

The Eternal Grounded Tree technique responded to his need.

Warmth spread through his chest and into the reservoir behind his heart, steadying the chaotic swirl of Ki and guiding it toward the center where it could collapse into something new.

He could feel the technique working in ways that went beyond simple breathing, shaping the raw energy into patterns that his conscious mind could not fully comprehend but his body understood on an instinctual level.

The compression happened slowly at first, the scattered Ki drawing together like droplets of water merging into a larger whole, and then all at once it collapsed inward with a force that made his entire body shudder.

A door behind his heart swung open, and the Ki that had been pressing against it rushed through into a space that had been waiting for him since the moment he was born.

Energy swirled and coalesced and solidified, forming a small but dense core that pulsed with a light that was visible even behind his closed eyes.

The Ki seed was there, small and perfect and entirely his, and he could feel it beginning to produce new Ki even as he watched, replenishing the reserves he had depleted during the breakthrough and extending tendrils of warmth throughout his body.

The sensation was strange and wonderful, like a second heart beating in his chest, and he understood now why cultivators spoke of this moment with such reverence.

A screen flashed in the corner of his vision.

[Breakthrough Complete: Advanced Knight Stage (Initial)]

[Physical Limit Increased: 50 → 150]

[All Physical Stats Increased by 10]

[Strength: 50 → 60]

[Agility: 50 → 60]

[Endurance: 50 → 60]

[Defense: 50 → 60]

[Ki Core Formed: Eternal Grounded Tree variant]

[Ki Production: Passive regeneration established]

[Lifespan: Extended by approximately 50 years]

[Note: The Eternal Grounded Tree breathing technique has become fully integrated with the host's Ki core. The technique can no longer be separated from the host's cultivation and will continue to evolve as the host advances. Ki can now be moved without consciously activating the breathing technique, though the technique itself has become an inseparable part of the host's being.]

Elijah opened his eyes and looked around the ring. Jack was still seated beside him with his eyes closed and his gold aura blazing brighter than Elijah had ever seen it, the light pulsing in rhythm with a heartbeat that seemed to echo through the empty space.

His face was calm, almost serene, and Elijah could feel the density of the Ki that was gathering in his chest, far more than Elijah had been able to gather before his own breakthrough.

Curious about the differences in their breakthroughs, Elijah focused his attention on Jack and requested another status scan from the system. The screen flickered and displayed Jack's new stats.

[Status Scan: Jack Reyes]

He turned his attention to Tristan, who was still deep in concentration with his purple aura flickering and pulsing as he worked to compress his Ki into a solid core.

The Inner Breathing technique that Elijah had given him worked differently than Jack's method or Elijah' s Eternal Grounded Tree.

It compressed the Ki in layers, building the core from the outside in rather than collapsing it all at once, and each layer required a new surge of effort that tested Tristan's willpower to its absolute limit.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Tristan's purple aura flared brightly and then stabilized into something denser and more controlled than it had been before.
