Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12 — The Space Between Them

Nothing happened the next day.

No sudden danger.

No impossible moments.

No cracks in reality.

The world moved exactly the way it was supposed to.

And somehow—

That made everything worse.

---

Liora didn't look for Adrian.

That was the first thing she changed.

Not consciously.

Not at first.

But she noticed it anyway.

The way her eyes didn't scan the room when she walked into class.

The way she didn't slow down near the hallway corners where they usually crossed paths.

The way she didn't check the park bench when she passed by it.

It wasn't avoidance.

She told herself that.

It was just—

Not expecting him.

---

Except she did.

---

He just wasn't there.

---

"…You're quiet today."

Liora blinked, pulling her attention back as her friend nudged her lightly.

"…Am I?"

"A little."

She shrugged faintly. "…Just tired."

"That's not what it looks like."

Liora didn't respond to that.

Because she didn't know what it looked like.

Only what it felt like.

And that—

Was harder to explain.

---

She made it through the morning without thinking about it too much.

That was the goal.

Keep things normal.

Keep things simple.

Keep things—

Separate.

---

It worked.

Mostly.

---

Until it didn't.

---

She was walking down the hallway between classes, her attention half on the conversation around her and half on nothing at all, when she saw him.

Standing near the window.

Exactly where he would have been any other day.

Adrian.

For a moment—

She stopped.

Not visibly.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But internally—

Everything paused.

---

He didn't move toward her.

Didn't call out.

Didn't do anything.

He just—

Stood there.

Watching.

---

Not intensely.

Not possessively.

Just—

Present.

---

Like always.

---

Liora's chest tightened slightly.

Not from fear.

Not completely.

Something else.

Something she didn't want to name.

---

"…Hey," she said when she got closer.

Her voice came out normal.

Too normal.

---

Adrian nodded slightly. "…Hey."

That was it.

No teasing.

No observation.

No quiet comments about her being late or distracted.

Just—

A greeting.

---

The silence that followed felt heavier than it should have.

---

"…You're not in class?" she asked.

"I am."

"…Then why are you out here?"

A small pause.

"…Waiting."

The word landed softly.

But it didn't feel light.

Liora's fingers curled slightly at her side.

"…For what?"

Another pause.

This one longer.

"…You."

Her breath caught—

Just for a second.

And that was enough.

---

"…You didn't have to do that."

The words came out more carefully now.

Measured.

Controlled.

---

"I know."

---

Another silence.

---

Liora shifted slightly, her gaze dropping for just a moment before lifting again.

"…You could've just gone in."

"I could have."

"…Then why didn't you?"

A pause.

Not hesitation.

Not uncertainty.

Just—

Honesty.

"…Because you might not have come."

That—

That wasn't fair.

---

Liora looked away.

Just slightly.

"…I would've come."

"I know."

"…Then—"

"You wouldn't have looked for me."

The words weren't accusatory.

They weren't sharp.

They were just—

Correct.

---

Liora didn't respond.

Because she couldn't.

---

"…I'm not avoiding you," she said after a moment.

It wasn't entirely true.

But it wasn't entirely false either.

---

"I know."

---

That made it worse.

---

Another pause settled between them.

Longer this time.

---

"…I've been thinking," she said quietly.

Adrian didn't interrupt.

Didn't fill the silence.

He just waited.

---

"…About what you said."

A small shift in the air.

Not physical.

Something else.

---

"And?" he asked.

---

Liora hesitated.

Not because she didn't have an answer.

Because she had too many.

---

"…I don't know what to do with it."

There it was.

Simple.

Honest.

Unresolved.

---

Adrian's gaze didn't waver.

"…You don't have to do anything."

Her head shook slightly. "…That's not true."

"It is."

"No, it's not," she said, more firmly this time. "Because it doesn't just sit there."

Her voice lowered.

"…It changes things."

A pause.

"…Yes."

He didn't deny it.

Didn't try to soften it.

---

Liora exhaled slowly.

"…You let that happen."

The words were quieter now.

Not accusing.

Not sharp.

Just—

Present.

---

"…Yes."

---

No hesitation.

No excuse.

---

Liora swallowed.

"…And you'd do it again."

Not a question.

A statement.

---

"…Yes."

---

That certainty—

That was the problem.

---

Her chest tightened slightly.

"…That's what I don't understand."

A pause.

"…You can stop it."

"Yes."

"…You can fix it."

"No."

Her gaze sharpened. "…You know what I mean."

"I do."

"Then why not?"

The question hung there.

Heavy.

Real.

---

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

---

"…Because it wasn't you."

---

The same answer.

The same truth.

---

Liora shook her head slightly.

"…That's not enough."

"It is."

"To you," she said.

"Yes."

---

Silence.

---

"…That's what scares me."

The words came out softer than anything else she had said.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just—

Real.

---

Adrian didn't respond right away.

For the first time—

There was something else in his expression.

Not doubt.

Not regret.

Something quieter.

---

"…I know."

---

Liora looked at him.

Really looked at him.

---

"…And you're okay with that?"

---

A pause.

Not long.

Not drawn out.

Just enough.

---

"…Yes."

---

No hesitation.

No conflict.

---

That was the answer.

---

Liora let out a slow breath, her gaze dropping again.

"…I don't know if I am."

---

Another silence.

---

And this one—

Didn't feel like it needed to be filled.

---

"…That's okay," Adrian said quietly.

---

Her head lifted slightly.

"…It is?"

---

"Yes."

---

"…Why?"

---

A pause.

---

"…Because you're still here."

---

The same words.

But this time—

They didn't feel the same.

---

Not comforting.

Not grounding.

---

Heavy.

---

Liora studied him for a moment longer.

Trying to understand.

Trying to reconcile something that didn't fit.

---

"…I don't want everything else to not matter."

Her voice was quiet.

Careful.

---

"I know."

---

"…But you do."

---

"Yes."

---

That was the difference.

---

Liora stepped back slightly.

Not far.

Not dramatically.

Just—

Enough.

---

"…I need time."

---

Adrian didn't stop her.

Didn't reach out.

Didn't move.

---

"…Okay."

---

That was all he said.

---

Liora nodded faintly.

Then turned.

And walked away.

---

This time—

He didn't follow.

---

The world continued.

Normal.

Steady.

Unchanged.

---

But something remained.

---

Not broken.

Not shattered.

---

Just—

Unresolved.

---

And for the first time—

Adrian let it stay that way.
