Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The First Threshold of Power

The training grounds were no longer quiet.

They were awake.

Energy pulsed faintly beneath the stone floor like a heartbeat the entire academy shared. Students stood in formation, but no one was relaxed. Even the air felt structured—measured, controlled, like the world itself was watching to see who would break first.

Elara stood among them.

Still.

Listening.

Waiting.

But something inside her was not waiting anymore.

It was pressing.

Softly.

Like a locked door trying to remember how to open itself.

"Today," a voice announced, "you will begin understanding your classifications."

A tall instructor stepped forward.

Behind him, glowing symbols appeared in the air.

Ranks.

E-Rank. D-Rank. C-Rank. B-Rank. A-Rank.

The students murmured quietly.

"You are not here to simply learn," the instructor continued.

"You are here to survive your abilities."

A silence followed.

Then he raised his hand.

A faint pressure spread across the field.

Some students instinctively flinched.

"That," he said, "is what uncontrolled energy feels like."

Elara's eyes narrowed slightly.

She felt it too.

Not outside.

Inside.

A strange echo beneath her skin.

Kai leaned slightly toward her, whispering casually:

"Don't overthink it. The faster you understand your ability, the faster you rank up."

She glanced at him. "And if I don't understand it?"

He smiled.

"Then it understands you first."

A faint tension built in her chest.

She didn't like that answer.

Cassian Rowe stood a few meters away.

Watching.

Not speaking.

But his gaze kept returning to her—not the others.

Only her.

"First exercise," the instructor announced.

"You will attempt to sense your ability."

A few students stepped forward confidently.

Some closed their eyes.

Others extended their hands.

Nothing visible happened—but energy shifted subtly across the field.

Elara tried to focus.

Sense it?

She wasn't even sure what she was supposed to feel.

But then—

It happened.

A faint pull.

Behind her eyes.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Something like… recognition.

Her breath slowed.

A voice echoed in her mind.

Not spoken.

Felt.

Open.

Elara stiffened.

Her fingers twitched slightly.

"What… was that?" she whispered under her breath.

Kai noticed immediately.

"You felt something?"

Elara hesitated.

"…Maybe."

Kai's expression shifted slightly.

"Don't chase it too fast."

"Some abilities don't like being forced."

The instructor continued speaking, but his voice faded slightly in Elara's awareness.

"All abilities respond to three factors—control, emotion, and instinct."

"Rank is not given. It is revealed."

Emotion.

Instinct.

Control.

The words echoed.

Something inside Elara responded sharply.

A memory flickered.

Dark kitchen.

Cold floor.

A letter in her hands.

A mark on her skin pulsing.

Her chest tightened—

"Elara."

Cassian's voice cut through.

Soft.

Direct.

She blinked.

Back to reality.

"You're drifting," he said quietly.

Not unkind.

Just observant.

"Stay grounded."

She nodded slightly.

But her breathing had changed.

Something was rising.

Slowly.

Uncontrolled.

"Next phase," the instructor said.

"Emotional trigger calibration."

A few students looked nervous.

Kai sighed.

"Oh joy. This one hurts."

Elara frowned. "Hurts?"

Kai nodded.

"Your ability reacts to emotional spikes. They're going to push you until something breaks."

Elara's stomach tightened slightly.

"That sounds unnecessary."

Kai gave a small grin.

"Welcome to Blackthorne."

The training field shifted.

Walls of light rose around selected students.

Each was isolated.

Elara felt the barrier form around her too.

A voice echoed inside the field.

"Recall a moment of emotional intensity."

"Do not resist it."

Elara froze slightly.

A moment of emotional intensity.

Her mind didn't hesitate.

It went straight to it.

The kitchen.

The letter.

The words:

You are nothing.

Her fingers curled tightly.

Something inside her cracked—

just slightly.

And the world responded.

A faint distortion rippled through the air around her.

Not visible to everyone.

But noticeable to the instructors.

Cassian's eyes sharpened immediately.

Kai straightened.

"…Oh," he muttered. "That's new."

The instructor stepped forward.

"Stop the calibration—"

But it was already happening.

Elara's breathing had changed.

The mark on her leg pulsed faintly beneath her uniform.

Once.

Twice.

And for a split second—

Elara felt something open inside her mind.

Not a door.

A system.

Something vast.

Something waiting.

Then it stopped.

Abruptly.

Like it had been pulled back by force.

Elara staggered slightly.

"What… was that?" she whispered.

Silence fell across the training field.

The instructor stared at her.

For the first time—

uncertain.

Cassian didn't look away.

Kai slowly exhaled.

"…Yeah," he said softly.

"You're definitely not normal."

And somewhere deep inside Blackthorne Academy—

A hidden record updated itself again.

Status: UNSTABLE AWAKENING DETECTED
