Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The enormous white wolf stepped fully into the clearing, silent despite its size. Moonlight reflected across silver-white fur marked with scars older than memory itself.
Its eyes glowed gold.
Not animal gold.
Alpha gold.
Ancient.
Absolute.
Every wolf in the forest lowered themselves instinctively.
Including the Alphas.
Nancy felt the command ripple through her bones before the wolf even spoke.
Because it did speak.
Not aloud.
Inside them.
Enough.
The entire forest stilled instantly.
Even the Veil paused above the fracture.
The First Alpha slowly lifted its head toward the sky.
The creature shrieked the moment their eyes met.
Fear.
Real fear.
Nancy's pulse jumped.
The Veil was afraid of him.
Evan whispered faintly,
"Oh cool. The giant nightmare monster has a nightmare monster."
Leo elbowed him hard.
Kai nearly collapsed again beside Nancy, breathing unevenly now.
The First Alpha's gaze shifted toward him.
Toward the silver cracks spreading beneath his skin.
And for the first time—
the ancient wolf looked… concerned.
You carry too much.
Kai gave a weak laugh.
"Yeah. I noticed."
The First Alpha moved closer.
Nancy's instincts screamed at her to kneel completely, but the wolf stopped directly in front of her instead.
Its eyes studied her carefully.
Not judging.
Measuring.
You are the bridge.
Nancy swallowed hard.
"That's bad, right?"
The massive wolf's ears twitched slightly.
Possibly amusement.
Not yet.
The fracture above them tore wider again.
The second creature forced another limb through reality, shrieking violently.
The First Alpha finally looked up fully.
And growled.
The sound shook the forest harder than thunder.
The sky itself reacted.
Silver cracks splintered outward.
The Veil answered with a roar of its own.
Then the First Alpha turned back toward Nancy and Kai.
The bond between you opened the fracture.
But not because it is weak.
Nancy frowned slightly.
"Then why?"
The First Alpha's golden eyes narrowed.
Because it is real.
The words hit harder than expected.
The Veil cannot create true bonds.
Only consume them.
That is why it obsesses over your kind.
Nancy glanced toward Kai.
He was already looking at her.
That familiar look again.
The one that made everything feel dangerous in a completely different way.
The First Alpha continued.
Severing the bond is not the only choice.
Hope surged through Nancy instantly.
Kai straightened slightly despite the pain.
Leo looked seconds away from emotional collapse from relief alone.
Evan pointed upward nervously.
"Love the hopeful plot twist. Tiny concern though—sky apocalypse?"
Right.
The Veil had noticed the conversation too.
Its countless eyes locked onto the First Alpha with growing hatred.
TRAITOR.
The First Alpha bared enormous fangs.
Coward.
The Veil screamed.
Every creature emerging from the fracture lunged downward at once.
The forest erupted into chaos.
"MOVE!" Leo shouted.
Wolves shifted instantly around the clearing, fur exploding outward as dozens of massive wolves launched toward the invading creatures.
Nancy barely had time to react before the First Alpha turned sharply toward her.
Listen carefully.
There is one way to close the fracture without death.
Nancy's heart slammed.
"What is it?"
The ancient wolf looked directly at Kai.
Then back at her.
And said the last thing either of them expected.
One of you must become something new.
