The creature smiled.
Not with a mouth.
With the entire world.
The darkness around them bent inward unnaturally, forming something almost human before collapsing again into shadows and eyes.
Nancy's pulse hammered.
Every instinct screamed at her to run.
But Kai was still there.
Still fighting.
Barely.
He dropped to one knee with a violent gasp as silver fractures crawled higher across his throat.
"Nancy…" His voice cracked painfully. "Don't let it touch you."
Too late for that, she thought.
The Veil had been touching her for a long time now.
The whispers deepened around them.
TWO VESSELS.
TWO DOORS.
THE FRACTURE OPENS WIDER.
The massive shape behind Kai shifted again.
Nancy finally saw part of it clearly—
A hand.
If it could even be called that.
Endless black fingers woven from shadows and bone, each joint opening with blinking eyes instead of skin.
It reached slowly toward her.
The air distorted around it.
Reality peeling apart.
Nancy's silver energy burst outward instinctively.
The hand stopped.
For the first time—
the creature hesitated.
Kai noticed too.
His remaining human eye widened slightly.
"…it's afraid of you."
Nancy almost laughed at how insane that sounded.
Then the creature screamed.
The sound wasn't loud.
It was worse.
It felt personal.
Every fear Nancy had ever buried ripped violently to the surface—
Being abandoned.
Losing herself.
Forgetting everyone she loved.
Becoming something inhuman.
And beneath all of it—
the terrifying certainty that maybe the darkness inside her had always belonged to the Veil.
Nancy staggered.
The creature saw weakness immediately.
The shadows lunged.
Kai moved first.
He slammed himself between Nancy and the creature just as black tendrils exploded forward.
They pierced straight through him.
Nancy screamed.
Silver light erupted across the entire void.
Kai choked violently as darkness spread through the cracks beneath his skin like poison.
But he held the tendrils in place.
Held them back from her.
"KAI!"
His body shook from the strain.
"Listen to me," he gasped. "The bond works both ways."
Nancy froze.
The Veil roared inside the connection.
Kai grabbed her wrist tightly.
His hand was ice cold now.
"If it can reach me through you—"
Understanding hit her instantly.
"You can reach it too," she whispered.
The creature reacted immediately.
Panicked.
The shadows around them became violent, unstable.
The Veil never wanted connection.
It wanted control.
Nancy stepped forward before fear could stop her.
"Kai, if this goes wrong—"
"It will," he said weakly.
Despite everything—
she almost smiled.
Of course he'd say that.
The tendrils dug deeper into his chest.
Blood hit the black water below.
The Veil shrieked hungrily.
Nancy grabbed both sides of Kai's face, forcing him to look at her.
His silver eye flickered violently now.
Almost gone.
"Stay with me."
"Nancy—"
"Stay."
The silver light around her hands spread onto his skin instantly.
The moment their foreheads touched—
the connection exploded open.
And suddenly—
Nancy saw everything.
Not memories.
Truth.
The Veil.
Where it came from.
What it really was.
And why it had been searching for her long before she was ever born.
