Chapter 47 - The door that remembers

The moment Nancy touched the altar—

the world disappeared.

No light.

No sound.

No ground beneath her feet.

Only silence.

Endless.

Ancient.

And then—

a door.

Standing alone in the dark.

Tall.

Black.

Covered in silver markings that moved like living things.

Nancy stared at it.

Because somehow—

she knew.

This wasn't a door you opened.

It was a door that judged.

Behind her—

Kai's voice.

"Nancy!"

She turned sharply.

He was there.

Then Leo.

Mara.

Evan.

Even the Alpha.

All pulled into the darkness with her.

Leo looked around once and sighed.

"I hate magical doors. They always have opinions."

"Helpful," Mara muttered.

"Thank you."

The Alpha stepped forward slowly.

His face had gone pale.

"The Heart Gate."

Nancy frowned.

"That sounds dramatic."

"Because it is."

Of course.

The symbols across the door shifted.

And then—

a voice.

Not the entity.

Older.

Deeper.

Everywhere.

Only truth enters.

Leo whispered,

"Fantastic. I'm immediately disqualified."

The voice continued.

To separate what was broken, all bonds must be named.

All lies must be buried.

All love must survive being seen.

Silence.

Nancy stared.

"…I'm sorry, what?"

The Alpha closed his eyes briefly.

"It means the gate will force honesty."

Leo groaned.

"Oh, I would rather fight actual demons."

Too late.

The first symbol lit.

Bright silver.

And the voice said—

Begin.

Round One — The Alpha

The door turned toward him first.

Of course it did.

The Alpha stood still.

Like a man already sentenced.

The voice asked—

What truth do you bury deepest?

A long silence.

Then—

his answer.

"I loved her mother."

Nancy froze.

Oh.

Oh.

Leo whispered, "Well, that's horrifyingly relevant."

Nobody shushed him.

Because nobody was breathing.

The Alpha's eyes stayed on the door.

"I loved her before she chose someone else. Before duty became more important than desire."

His voice was steady.

Too steady.

"I stayed anyway. I protected them anyway. And when the time came…"

His jaw tightened.

"I helped destroy the only thing she begged me to save."

Nancy's chest hurt.

Because grief recognized grief.

The voice asked—

And your greatest regret?

His answer came like confession.

"That she died believing I would protect her daughter better than I did."

The symbol dimmed.

Accepted.

The gate moved.

Round Two — Kai

Kai swore softly.

"Great."

Nancy wanted to stop this.

Couldn't.

The voice asked—

What truth do you fear speaking?

Kai looked at her.

And that was answer enough.

Still—

he said it.

"I love her more than I know how to survive."

Silence.

Nancy forgot how to breathe.

Leo quietly whispered,

"Damn."

Even Mara looked emotional.

Kai didn't look away.

"I keep trying to protect her because losing her feels like the kind of thing a person doesn't come back from."

His voice lowered.

"And I'm terrified that one day she'll ask me to let her go… and I won't know how."

Nancy's eyes burned.

Because some truths are beautiful.

And cruel.

The voice asked—

Would you choose her freedom over your love?

That one hurt.

Everyone felt it.

Kai answered anyway.

"…yes."

A pause.

"Even if it destroys me."

The symbol dimmed.

Accepted.

Nancy wanted to cry.

Punch something.

Kiss him.

Preferably all three.

Round Three — Nancy

The final symbol lit.

The darkness turned to her.

The voice asked—

What lie do you tell yourself to survive?

She stood there.

Heart pounding.

Because she already knew.

And she hated it.

Her answer came quietly.

"That if I keep everyone safe… losing myself would be worth it."

Kai closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

The voice pressed deeper.

And the truth beneath that?

Nancy's voice cracked.

"That maybe I was easier to love when I was the one sacrificing."

Silence hit like thunder.

Even she hadn't realized how true it was until she said it.

How much of her love had become offering.

Pain.

Proof.

The entity stirred inside her.

Listening.

The voice asked one final question—

Do you want to live?

And that—

that broke her.

Because buried under duty and fear and survival—

she had stopped asking.

Tears burned.

Her answer shook.

"Yes."

Stronger now.

"Yes."

Not for them.

Not as payment.

Not as proof.

For herself.

"I want to live."

The darkness trembled.

The entity whispered—

Good.

The final symbol dimmed.

Accepted.

The Gate Opens

The black door slowly opened.

Light poured through.

Blinding.

Warm.

And inside—

someone was waiting.

Nancy stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Because standing in the light—

was her mother.

Not memory.

Not illusion.

Her.

Watching.

Waiting.

Smiling sadly.

Nancy's voice shattered.

"…Mom?"

And for the first time in years—

home answered back.
