Allen collected four silver badges from beside the device, each one etched with the number that would define its owner's career until enough proven work forced the guild to engrave another.
He held the first badge toward Elise, who sat forward before he finished extending his hand.
"Your badge," Allen said, "do not lose it, because replacing one requires a large fee and a mountain of paperwork."
Elise accepted it with both hands, then traced 14,820 with her thumb as quiet accomplishment softened her face.
"Thank you, Guildmaster," she said, unable to keep the warmth out of her voice.
Sable received badge 9,210 with a decisive nod, examined the number once, then slipped it into a pouch at her belt.
Juna crossed her arms when Allen offered badge 1,450 and looked at the silver as if its value had been badly overstated.
"It is yours," Allen said, holding the badge closer.
"Hajin carries the important things," Juna replied, making no move to take it.
