Chapter 3 - The left hand of hokage

Morning arrived gently over Konoha.

Sunlight filtered through the Hokage residence, soft but clear—like a new beginning the village was trying to accept.

Inside the main chamber—

Three figures stood.

Hashirama Senju at the center.

Tobirama slightly behind, silent, observant.

And before them—

Uchiha Aoi.

Aoi's posture was straight.

But not firm.

There was a slight drop in his shoulders… a quiet weight in his presence.

His usual calm remained—

But now, it carried something else.

Fatigue.

Restraint.

Loss.

His eyes met Hashirama's.

And for a moment—

Neither spoke.

"…Thank you for coming," Hashirama said softly.

Aoi lowered his gaze slightly.

"…It is only right, Hokage-sama."

His voice was steady.

But not strong.

Measured… and faintly strained.

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"Madara…" Hashirama began, the name catching slightly in his throat.

Aoi's expression shifted.

Subtly.

Not exaggerated.

Just enough.

"…He spoke to us," Aoi said quietly.

Tobirama's eyes sharpened.

Hashirama leaned forward slightly.

"What did he say?"

Aoi paused.

As if choosing his words carefully.

"He asked us to leave with him."

The room stilled.

Tobirama's gaze hardened almost imperceptibly.

Hashirama's expression tightened.

"…I see," he murmured.

Aoi continued.

"We… could not."

Not defiant.

Not proud.

Just… firm.

"Konoha was not built by one man alone," he said, voice calm but carrying quiet emotion. "It was built with the hope that our children… would not have to live as we did."

A faint pause.

"That hope… is still here."

His eyes lifted again.

Meeting Hashirama's directly.

"There was hesitation," he admitted.

"Doubt."

Truth.

Carefully placed.

"But in the end…"

Aoi's voice softened slightly.

"We chose to stay."

Hashirama's expression shifted.

Something in his shoulders eased.

Not fully.

But noticeably.

"…Why?" Tobirama asked suddenly.

Direct.

Sharp.

Aoi turned to him.

No irritation.

No defensiveness.

Just calm.

"…Because we believed in you."

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

But clear.

Tobirama didn't react.

Hashirama did.

"You were our enemy once," Aoi continued, gaze returning to Hashirama. "And yet… you chose peace when you had every reason not to."

A small pause.

"That matters."

No flattery.

Just acknowledgment.

"As Hokage…" he added quietly, "you carry the promise of stability. Of safety."

His expression lowered slightly.

"And we chose… to trust that promise."

Silence followed.

He didn't say I.

He didn't say the Uchiha demand.

Only:

We chose.

We believed.

We stayed.

Tobirama watched him closely.

Too closely.

Measuring.

Weighing.

"…Trust is fragile," Tobirama said coolly. "And not something to be given so easily."

Aoi nodded faintly.

"…I agree."

No resistance.

No argument.

Which made it harder to push against.

Hashirama exhaled slowly.

"…Regardless," he said, voice firming slightly, "you stayed. That matters."

He straightened.

"As Hokage, I will ensure that the Uchiha are treated fairly."

Aoi didn't respond immediately.

Only inclined his head.

Tobirama stepped forward slightly.

"If reassurance is needed," he said, tone controlled, "there are ways to formalize it."

Hashirama glanced at him.

Tobirama continued.

"The village requires structure. Order."

A brief pause.

"The Military Police Force."

Aoi remained still.

Listening.

"It would be appropriate," Tobirama said, "for the Uchiha to take responsibility for internal security."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"Authority. Recognition. A defined role within the village."

A quiet silence followed.

It was a good offer.

On the surface.

Aoi understood it instantly.

Power—

Contained.

Recognition—

Separated.

He lowered his gaze slightly.

Thinking.

Then—

"…It is a generous offer."

No rejection.

No acceptance.

Just acknowledgment.

Tobirama watched him.

Waiting.

Aoi continued softly.

"…But I must decline."

Hashirama blinked.

Tobirama's eyes narrowed slightly.

"We did not choose to stay… to stand apart," Aoi said.

His voice remained calm.

Steady.

"We wish to stand with the village."

Not above.

Not outside.

With.

"A shared structure," he added. "Multiple clans contributing together."

Measured.

Reasonable.

Difficult to argue against.

Tobirama's gaze sharpened further.

This was not refusal born of pride.

It was…

Positioning.

"The Uchiha will fulfill their duties," Aoi said calmly. "As shinobi. As part of Konoha."

A brief pause.

"That is enough."

Silence filled the room.

Different this time.

Heavier.

Hashirama looked between them.

Then at Aoi.

And something in his expression changed.

Not just relief.

Recognition.

"…I understand," he said quietly.

Tobirama didn't speak.

But he didn't interrupt either.

Hashirama stepped forward.

"Aoi."

The name carried weight now.

"You have taken responsibility for your clan… at a difficult time."

Aoi remained still.

Listening.

"And you chose to stay," Hashirama continued. "Not out of fear… but conviction."

A faint pause.

"That deserves more than words."

Tobirama's gaze shifted slightly.

He knew what was coming.

Hashirama straightened.

"As Hokage… I appoint you—"

A brief silence.

"—as my deputy."

The room stilled.

"You will stand beside me," Hashirama said firmly. "As Tobirama does."

No hesitation.

No ambiguity.

"Your voice… will carry equal weight in matters concerning the village."

Tobirama's eyes narrowed slightly.

Not in open objection.

But not in agreement either.

Aoi didn't react immediately.

Just a brief pause.

Then—

He lowered his head.

"…I will do my best to meet your expectations, Hokage-sama."

Not eagerness.

Not ambition.

Just acceptance.

Hashirama nodded.

Relief—clear this time.

Tobirama remained silent.

But his gaze stayed fixed on Aoi.

Sharp.

Unyielding.

And Aoi—

Behind calm eyes and a quiet expression—

Understood.

The position had been given.

But not accepted.

Not fully.

Not by everyone.

Outside—

The village moved forward.

Unaware that in a single meeting—

Power had shifted.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But in a way that would shape everything to come.
