Chapter 1 - Prologue: Beautiful Dreamer

The snow started falling at dusk. 

Not the soft kind from Christmas cards, but the wet, heavy stuff that turns to slush before it hits the pavement—the kind that soaks through your socks and freezes your bones. The wind cut down the avenue like a blade, rattling the streetlamps, turning the neon signs into blurred streaks of pink and green against the gray sky.

November thirtieth. Winter had come early to Gotham.

The Monarch Theater squatted at the corner of Fifth and Park Row like a forgotten jewel. Art Deco gold leaf peeling from the marquee. Velvet curtains inside that smelled of mothballs and mildew. The chandelier in the lobby flickered, casting jittery shadows across the worn carpet where generations of shoes had trampled a path to the concession stand.

Bruce Wayne stood in the center of the lobby, eight years old and trying not to fidget.

He was dressed for the occasion. Black turtleneck that itched at his throat. Gray wool slacks that his mother had pressed that morning, the crease sharp enough to cut paper. Black dress shoes that pinched his toes—he'd outgrown them two months ago, but Martha insisted they looked proper. Over it all, a gray pea coat with silver buttons that caught the light, heavy enough to make his shoulders ache.

And the hat.

The fedora was gray felt, sized down special by a milliner in London. It had been his father's first, then his. The brim cast a shadow over his eyes. A gray scarf was wrapped twice around his neck, scratchy and warm. He kept touching the brim of the hat. Kept pulling at the scarf. Kept looking up at the poster on the wall.

THE GRAY GHOST

Adam West grinned down at him in that ridiculous costume—the gray suit, the black mask, the utility belt that looked like it weighed fifty pounds. Bruce didn't care that it was campy. Didn't care that the critics said it was silly. To him, the Gray Ghost was real. He fought crime. He saved people. He was a hero.

"Bruce, stop fidgeting."

Martha Wayne's voice was soft, but it carried. She stood beside him, elegant even in the cold. Auburn hair pinned up, a few loose curls framing her face. Green eyes that missed nothing. She wore a pearl-gray dress that caught the lobby lights, and over it, a mink coat that Thomas had bought her for their anniversary—she'd felt guilty about the fur, but wore it anyway because he loved her in it. Diamond earrings sparkled at her lobes. Her mother's pearls—three strands, perfectly matched—lay against her throat. She smelled like jasmine and the cold air she'd brought in from outside.

Thomas Wayne adjusted his charcoal overcoat. Cashmere. Cost more than most Gotham families made in a month. He was a tall man, broad-shouldered, the kind of presence that filled a room without trying. Dark hair going gray at the temples. A jaw that looked like it had been carved from the bedrock beneath the city. His eyes were the color of the harbor on a cloudy day—gray and deep and somehow always sad, even when he smiled.

He wore a navy suit underneath the coat, crisp white shirt, a silk tie the color of dried blood. Black leather gloves. Shoes polished to a mirror shine. He smelled like cedar and the scotch he'd had with dinner.

"You excited, slugger?" Thomas asked, kneeling down to Bruce's level. His hand was huge, strong enough to lift Bruce with one arm. He squeezed Bruce's shoulder through the pea coat. "The Gray Ghost is going to catch the bad guys."

Bruce looked at his father. At the hat. At the way Thomas's eyes crinkled when he smiled.

"I want to be the hero," Bruce said. His voice was small, but serious. Eight years old and already serious. "Not the sidekick. The hero."

Martha laughed. It was a warm sound, like honey in tea. She crouched down, her heels clicking against the marble floor, and adjusted Bruce's scarf. Her fingers were cold but gentle.

"You already are, sweetheart," she said.

But Bruce shook his head. "No. I mean really. I want to help people. Like him."

Thomas stood up. His shadow fell over Bruce, long and protective. "You will, Bruce. I know you will."

The theater was empty except for them. A private screening. Thomas had rented the whole place—he did that sometimes, when he wanted to do something special without the crowds, without the cameras, without the way people stared at the Wayne family like they were animals in a zoo.

They walked down the center aisle. The carpet was worn thin, red velvet faded to pink in the high-traffic areas. Bruce walked between them, his small hand in his father's gloved one, his mother's hand on his shoulder. The seats were deep enough to swallow him whole. He climbed into the middle one, popcorn bucket in his lap that he didn't touch. He was too busy staring at the screen.

The lights dimmed. The projector whirred to life, clicking and rattling like a dying insect.

The theme music started. Brassy. Loud. Ridiculous.

Bruce started humming along.

They walked out two hours later, and the world had changed.

The snow was coming down harder now, thick as confetti, turning the city into a grayscale photograph. The wind cut through Bruce's pea coat like it was made of paper. He shoved his hands in his pockets and hunched his shoulders, but the cold got in anyway, settling in his bones.

Thomas had parked three blocks away. The lot had been full when they arrived—some charity gala at the hotel next door—so he'd left the car on the street. Three blocks. In this weather. It felt like miles.

"Stay close, honey," Martha said. Her breath plumed in the air. She had her arm linked through Thomas's, her head resting on his shoulder for a moment. "It's slippery."

Bruce walked ahead of them, humming the Gray Ghost theme. Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da. His shoes slipped on the sidewalk, the leather soles finding no purchase on the fresh snow. The fedora kept sliding down over his eyes. He had to push it up every three steps.

Park Row was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that made Bruce think of the movies his father didn't know he watched—the scary ones, the ones with monsters in alleys. But this wasn't a movie. This was just Gotham. Just winter. Just the city going to sleep under a blanket of snow.

The alley was a shortcut. Thomas knew it. He'd taken it a hundred times before. It cut between the theater and the parking garage, narrow and brick-walled, lined with fire escapes heavy with snow that hadn't fallen yet. Trash cans lined the walls. The smell was rot and cold and something else—something metallic that Bruce didn't have a name for yet.

"Wait up, Bruce," Thomas called. His voice echoed off the brick. "Let us catch up."

Bruce stopped. Turned.

He was still smiling. Still thinking about the Gray Ghost. About being a hero.

The man stepped out from behind the trash cans.

He wasn't a monster. That was the worst part. He was just a man. Thin. Wiry. Needed a shave—three days of gray stubble covered his cheeks. His coat was army surplus, olive drab, too thin for the weather. His hands were red from the cold, shaking as he raised them.

In his right hand, he held a gun.

It was a revolver. Old. Rust on the barrel. It looked like it might explode if he fired it. The man didn't seem to care. His eyes were empty—not evil, not angry. Just empty. Like something inside him had already died, and his body just hadn't gotten the message yet.

"The wallet," the man said. His voice was flat. No emotion. Just words, hanging in the cold air. "The pearls. Now."

Thomas didn't move. Not at first. He was looking at the gun. Then at the man's face. Then—slowly, carefully—at Bruce.

"Take it," Thomas said. His voice was steady. Too steady. He was trying to keep it calm. Trying to keep Bruce calm. He reached into his coat, slow movements, hands visible. "Just take it. Just don't—"

The sound was impossible.

Too loud. It bounced off the brick walls, a thunderclap in the narrow space, echoing down the alley and out into the street where nobody heard it because the wind was screaming and the snow was falling and the city didn't care about one more noise in the dark.

Thomas's head snapped back.

Not a fall. A snap. Like someone had cut a puppet's strings with a pair of shears.

The bullet entered above his left eye. A small hole, neat and dark. It exited the back of his skull in a spray of red and gray and white—bone and blood and something else, something that glistened in the dim light and shouldn't have been outside his father's head. It painted the brick wall behind him in a fan pattern, steaming in the cold air.

Thomas dropped. Straight down. His knees didn't buckle—they just stopped working. His body hit the pavement with a wet sound, a sound like a bag of meat hitting concrete. His eyes were open. Looking at nothing. Looking at the snow falling into his face.

Martha screamed.

It wasn't a movie scream. It wasn't a scream of surprise or fear. It was animal. Raw. A sound that came from somewhere deeper than language, older than words. She lunged forward—toward Thomas, toward Bruce, toward the gun—and her hand reached out, fingers spread, the pearls around her throat catching the light.

The second shot took her in the temple.

The side of her head exploded. The pearls—her mother's pearls, the ones she'd worn on her wedding day, the ones she'd clasped around Bruce's neck when he was a baby to make him laugh—the pearls scattered across the snow. White spheres on white powder. They rolled. They bounced. They disappeared into the slush and the blood.

She fell across Thomas. Her body landed with a thud that Bruce felt in his chest. Her hand was still reaching for him. Her fingers twitched. Once. Twice. Then stopped.

Bruce was frozen.

The humming had stopped. The Gray Ghost theme was gone. There was just the ringing in his ears, high and whining, like a television left on after the station went off the air.

He was looking at his father's face. At the hole where his eye used to be. At the blood pooling around his head, steaming in the cold, turning the snow pink and then red.

He was looking at his mother's hand. The fingers that had braided his hair that morning. The fingers that had buttoned his pea coat. The fingers that were now still, resting in a puddle of her own blood.

The fedora fell off his head.

It landed in the blood—Thomas's blood, a growing lake of it, dark and thick—and the gray felt turned black. The brim bent. The hat his father had given him. The hat that made him feel like the Gray Ghost.

The mugger looked at Bruce.

For a moment—just a moment—their eyes met. The man's eyes were wet. Tears? Snow? Bruce didn't know. Didn't care. The man raised the gun again. Pointed it at Bruce's head. The barrel was a black circle, endless, deep as a well.

Bruce didn't move. Couldn't move. He was eight years old and his parents were dead and there was a gun pointed at his face and he couldn't move.

Then—the sirens.

Distant. Wailing. Getting closer.

Someone had heard. Someone had called.

The mugger lowered the gun. His mouth opened, like he wanted to say something—an apology, an explanation, a curse—but no words came out. He turned. He ran. His footsteps splashed through the slush, fading, fading, gone.

And Bruce screamed.

It started as a whimper. A sound he didn't recognize as his own. Then it built, rising from his gut, tearing up through his chest, ripping his throat raw. He was screaming. Screaming so loud his voice broke. Screaming so hard his vision blurred.

He fell to his knees. The snow soaked through his slacks immediately, cold and wet, but he didn't feel it. He was grabbing his mother's hand—still warm, God, still warm—and shaking it, shaking it like he could wake her up.

"Mom," he sobbed. "Mom. Mom. Wake up. Mom, please. Wake up."

He lunged for his father. Grabbed the lapel of the charcoal coat, the cashmere now heavy with blood. Shook him. "Dad! Dad, get up! We have to go! Dad, please! Get up!"

They didn't move. They didn't wake up. Their eyes were open, staring at the snow falling from the gray sky, and they weren't moving.

Bruce collapsed between them. His hands were red. Covered in blood. His parents' blood. He held them up, staring at them, and the scream became a wail, a keening, a sound no child should make.

He crawled to the fedora. Picked it up. The gray felt was soaked through, heavy and dripping. He clutched it to his chest, rocking back and forth, back and forth. The snow fell on his head. On his shoulders. On his parents' bodies. Covering them. Hiding them. Making them white.

"Please," he whispered. Then louder: "Please! Somebody! Help!"

But the alley was empty. The city was silent. The wind howled, carrying the sound of the sirens closer, but not close enough. Not fast enough.

Bruce rocked, holding the bloody hat, and screamed until his throat bled.

Alfred Pennyworth found them five minutes later.

He'd been waiting in the car—a 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, gunmetal gray, the hood ornament a chrome woman with wings outstretched against the falling snow. The engine was running, the heater blasting, classical music playing low on the radio—something by Brahms, Alfred couldn't remember what. The leather seats smelled of pipe tobacco and the lemon oil he used to polish the dashboard.

He was fifty-two years old, but he looked older tonight. His hair was the color of iron, cut military-short, receding at the temples. His face was weathered—lines carved deep around his eyes and mouth, the map of a life spent in places he didn't talk about. He had the build of a man who had once been formidable—broad shoulders, thick forearms—but the muscle had gone soft in the three years since he'd left the service, since Thomas Wayne had hired him as driver and bodyguard and occasional confidant. His eyes were blue and usually sharp, but they'd been dulled lately by too much scotch and too little sleep.

He wore his uniform: a black wool overcoat with silver buttons, a gray suit underneath, black leather gloves. His chauffeur's cap was on the seat beside him. He hated the cap. Felt ridiculous in it. But Martha had insisted—"It completes the look, Alfred"—and he would have walked through fire for Martha Wayne.

When he heard the shots—two of them, crisp and unmistakable even over the Brahms—he was out of the car before his brain registered the sound.

He ran.

His shoes—polished black Oxfords, size eleven—slid on the icy pavement. His overcoat flapped behind him. The snow soaked through his trousers, freezing his legs. He was fifty-two, too old for running, too old for combat, his lungs burning and his heart hammering against his ribs.

He stopped at the mouth of the alley, one hand braced against the brick wall, and looked down the narrow passage.

He saw the Rolls first—the back of it, the taillights glowing red through the snow. Then he saw the bodies.

Thomas. Martha.

The blood. Christ, the blood. It looked black in the dim light, spreading across the snow like spilled ink.

And Bruce.

The boy was kneeling in the slush, covered in blood that wasn't his own, clutching that ridiculous gray hat to his chest. He was rocking. Making a sound—Jesus Christ, making a sound like a wounded animal, high and broken and endless.

"Oh God," Alfred whispered. His breath plumed in the air. "Oh God, no."

He pushed off the wall and ran forward. His shoes found no purchase on the ice; he nearly fell, caught himself, kept moving. His knees hit the snow beside Bruce, soaking through the wool of his trousers, cold biting through to the skin.

He reached out with a gloved hand—black leather, scuffed at the knuckles from where he'd punched a man six months ago in a bar fight he didn't remember starting—and touched the boy's shoulder.

"Master Bruce," he said. His voice cracked. It sounded like someone else's voice. "Master Bruce, come here. Come to me."

Bruce didn't respond. He was staring at his mother's face. At the hole in her temple. At the snow landing on her eyelashes and not melting because she was already cold.

Alfred picked him up.

The boy was limp. Dead weight. The hat fell from his hands, landing in the blood again, forgotten. Alfred didn't notice. He was looking at Thomas—the man who had given him a job when no one else would hire a washed-up SAS operative with a drinking problem—lying there with his head half gone. At Martha—the woman who had insisted he eat dinner with the family on holidays, who had asked about his life, who had treated him like a person instead of staff—dead in the snow.

He carried Bruce away, back toward the Rolls, the boy's screams rasping in his ear, the snow falling harder now, covering the alley, covering the bodies, covering the world in white.

Behind them, the Gray Ghost fedora lay in a puddle of crimson, the snow falling on it, covering it, hiding it.

And Gotham kept breathing. 

The wind howled down Park Row, carrying the smell of the river and the cold and the coming winter. The streetlights buzzed and flickered. The snow fell. 

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me.
