Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO

She supposed the creature had also sensed her presence, because a moment of silence that stretched waiting to be broken by any of them who made the first move lingered. Whatever is out there, it is clever enough, and had studied her move, since it made itself known moments ago. It probably knows she won't be able to move fast and it is going to plunge at her and devour her.

For all she knew she needed to get away from where she was as quickly as possible. Whatever was lurking was not trying to hide its presence anymore, but it is definitely waiting for the right time to attack. It took to motion, slowly, and so did she. They were both studying each other, one waiting for the other to let down their guard, but it definitely won't be the creature, it was ready to hunt and nothing could stop it. The night is its time and the forest its ground.

Suddenly a rush of strength travelled through her body expelling every ounce of fear and pain she had going on seconds before and a resolution came to her. Not today, she wasn't going to go down today. Her eyes looked on without blinking as she moved. Her hands scooped up her dress, ready to make a run for it.

I can do this, I can do this, she readied herself.

She got moving, the creature followed, its eyes on her and hers on it, yet she was smart enough to discreetly let her eyes waver and carve out a way of escape for her. Though far apart, they moved side by side. That distance, she has to make the best of it.

The stones and thorns she was once afraid of stepping into, suddenly felt like fine sand to her feet. This was an arena and her fate was in her hands.

She abruptly stopped, and made a run for it, the creature followed, sprinting with all its might.

She ran as fast as she could through the dark forest. Weaving between the trees and branches that slashed her body, while her heart raced at the maximum. She still can't see what's chasing her, even at this point. To look back is to fear, to fear is to lose focus, to lose focus is to fall, and to fall is to die, which was not really an option at this point. Therefore she would rather be oblivious of what the creatures looked like and just focus on getting away.

The thunderous growl of the creature got closer, its hoof, shaking the ground where it passed through. It had quickly covered the distance between them, which she thought would be enough for her to get away, but little did she know that she gravely underestimated this monstrous being.

She kept dashing through wearing her weary heart on her sleeves. She stumbled upon a clearing and just like a miracle — the one she had desperately wished for in her heart — she spotted a faint light ahead of her. A hut hidden amongst the trees. Her strength increased and she sprinted forward with all her might, she stretched forth her hand to reach for the door.

A smile of fulfillment plastered on her face, her racing mind screamed, 'Finally!', but then she lost her footing and tripped on the steps of the hut. She got up in a split second but she met herself back on the ground. She looked back and to her misery, her dress had gotten caught in the angry spikes of thorn rooted by the hut. Her eyes widened with horror, her hands fidgeted, trying to break herself free from what was holding her down. The hoofs of the beast got closer and closer as she struggled.

Her grip tightened on her fabric and she began to pull, harder and harder, each force, a pull closer to death. Finally she pulled, with all her strength and a desire to survive this ordeal and to her greatest relief, she broke free.

As her hands left her caught up piece of clothing behind, from the side of her eye she saw the creature jump forward, launching at her. She stood up and covered the only feet between her and the door. She burst through the door and slammed it shut behind her and latched it.

She leaned back against the door as she shut it close, and closed her eyes tightly. The creature hit the door with a loud thud that yanked her forward causing her to fall face flat on the hard wooden floor. She lay still as she silently gasped for air, trying her utmost best not to make any sound.

The creature moved around the hut for a while, spying around for several ways to get in. It walked back around and banged its body onto the doors several times, but the door wouldn't bulge.

Every slam from the creature made the lady jolt in fear, she crawled up into herself and curled her toes. She prayed desperately in her heart that the door would not burst open, she had no plans if it did.

Then, she looked around the dimly lit room for a defense tool, and her eyes spotted a weapon in the corner of the room. She slowly got up and tiptoed across the room taking her steps one at a time and avoiding any creaking noises. Her fingers curled around the cold silver spear, grabbing it and having no idea what to do with it.

She paused for a second as she grabbed it, and in a swift motion she spun around whilst twirling the long iron weapon in her hands and like muscle memory, she got into position, a stance that only someone exceptionally skilled would have. A wave of boldness engulfed her, and she looked on, her eyes squinted and focused on the door.

Her prayer changed, she didn't know why but she secretly wished that the creature would be able to break open the door.
