Bang!
A lightning-fast whip kick ripped through the apartment lobby and smashed into the blood-soaked tongue with a meaty thud.
Ivan's coat flared as the monstrous tongue got blasted backward like it had been hit by a truck.
The Long-Tongue Monster lost its balance and crashed hard onto the floor.
"Taekwondo?" Yoon Ji-soo stared in total shock, eyes glued to Ivan's right leg. "That's gotta be black-belt level, right?"
"Not a very funny joke," Ivan replied dryly, that Parisian accent cutting through.
Pyeon Sang-wook gripped the baseball bat tight and charged in. He brought it down with brutal force right on the monster's skull. Crunch! The creature's head caved inward, blood spraying out of the dent.
"Raaaah!" The Long-Tongue Monster let out a furious roar from its split mouth. It planted its hands on the ground and whipped its massive tongue around Pyeon Sang-wook like a python. The coils tightened fast, crushing in. Pyeon jammed the bat across his chest just in time to keep his ribs from snapping.
While everyone else stood there useless, Ivan exploded forward. His left leg powered off the ground and he shot like a cannonball straight at the monster. In a blink he was in its face. Fist clenched, he drove a punch clean through the Long-Tongue Monster's chest.
Blood and chunks of meat exploded outward. The creature screamed in agony, a twisted, wet howl echoing through the lobby.
It instantly released Pyeon Sang-wook and staggered back, ripping its body off Ivan's arm with a sickening squelch.
"Get back!" Lee Eun-hyuk shouted, calm as ice. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and aimed it.
The second the monster tried to lash its tongue at Ivan again, Lee Eun-hyuk pulled the trigger. A thick cloud of white powder blasted out, forcing the creature to retreat, choking and thrashing.
He glanced over his shoulder at the supermarket owner. "Uncle! Uncle!"
Kim Seok-hyun was frozen in terror. Only after Lee Eun-hyuk yelled a few more times did the old man snap out of it.
"When I give the signal, you hit the roll gate switch."
"O-okay…" Kim Seok-hyun stammered. He scrambled on shaky legs into the security office and stood in front of the button, fingers trembling like crazy.
Bang!
Lee Eun-hyuk roared at the top of his lungs. "Now! Uncle, hit the switch!"
Kim Seok-hyun slammed the button. The heavy iron roll gate started grinding down.
But the monster was still half a step outside. Closing it now might trap the damn thing inside with them. And just to make things worse, the fire extinguisher in Lee Eun-hyuk's hands sputtered empty.
The white cloud faded. He suddenly realized he was standing barely a meter away from the monster.
His eyes widened behind his glasses, a flash of pure panic.
A figure shot past him, slamming into both him and the creature, knocking them flying.
It was Seo Yi-kyung. She rolled across the floor, sprang up, and sprinted for the closing gate.
The gate was still dropping. Lee Eun-hyuk grabbed the bottom edge with both hands, muscles straining, trying to slow it down and buy her time.
Right then, the Long-Tongue Monster whipped its tongue out and stabbed her in the leg.
In that split second, Ivan ducked under the descending gate, grabbed Seo Yi-kyung's wrist, and hurled her back inside the building.
"Stubborn son of a bitch. Still alive after all that?" Ivan muttered, shaking his head.
The monster didn't come after him. It just turned on its stiff legs and shuffled away into the darkness.
"Hurry back!" Yoon Ji-soo ran over and helped Lee Eun-hyuk hold the gate.
Ivan didn't bother chasing the thing. Killing it gave him zero benefit.
He slipped back inside. The second everyone saw him safe, they let out a collective breath.
Clang!
The iron gate slammed shut completely. Only then did the whole group collapse onto the floor, legs giving out, hearts still hammering.
The shit they'd just witnessed had shattered their fucking brains. What the hell was happening to the world?
"Thank you," Lee Eun-hyuk said, looking at Ivan and Seo Yi-kyung.
"What the fuck was that?" Seo Yi-kyung panted, staring at the shriveled corpse drained of all its blood.
"That wasn't human," Lee Eun-hyuk said, eyes fixed on the darkness outside the gate.
With the immediate threat gone, residents started poking their heads out, nervously checking the lobby. Kim Seok-hyun marched straight up to Seo Yi-kyung and snapped, "Hey, I heard you're a firefighter. What the hell is the government doing? Aren't you supposed to protect civilians?"
"They'll take action," Seo Yi-kyung answered, still catching her breath, exhausted as fuck.
"Bullshit! We pay taxes all year and they can't even handle one goddamn monster?" Kim Seok-hyun barked, suddenly brave now that the danger had passed.
"Not just one," Lee Eun-hyuk said quietly.
The whole lobby went dead silent. Everyone followed his gaze outside.
Hell itself stared back.
Dozens of twisted, nightmarish monsters of every shape rampaged through the streets, ripping apart screaming survivors. The whole world looked like it had dropped straight into the pit.
Seo Yi-kyung whispered, "What the hell happened to this world?"
Lee Eun-hyuk shook his head. "I don't know. But it looks like it's finally ending."
Nobody spoke. A thick blanket of dread and terror pressed down on all of them.
Half an hour later, the crowd still hadn't dispersed. Some were frantically dialing their phones trying to call the cops. Others huddled together, shaking, too scared to even think about what they'd just seen.
"How's it looking?" Ivan Greevs walked over to Pyeon Sang-wook.
Pyeon Sang-wook handed the bent-up baseball bat back to Yoon Ji-soo. "I'll live."
Yoon Ji-soo suggested they head to the rooftop. Maybe they'd get signal up there.
The elevator was fucked, so the three of them took the stairs. Yoon Ji-soo clutched the bloodstained bat tight, sticking close to the two men. It was the only thing giving her any sense of safety right now.
"Lost its mind completely," Ivan muttered, walking behind Pyeon Sang-wook. He could already sense a familiar, chaotic signal getting closer. The starving woman hadn't died from the fall. She'd fully turned instead.
