Perfect chance to test if I can speed up the fusion, Ivan thought.

From his previous experiences, he already had a pretty good idea how to accelerate talent fusion. To rush Wave Perception, he needed to get close to the electromagnetic waves that parasites constantly put out.

He checked the address on the flyer.

Ivan hopped on a bus heading to Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Half an hour later, the bus pulled up and he stepped off into the crowd.

Compared to other parts of Tokyo, Shinjuku had insane foot traffic. Even on a normal weekday, the sidewalks were packed with people moving in every direction.

"Damn, this place is lively as hell," Ivan muttered, looking at the dense sea of bodies.

Following the exact address on the flyer, he easily found Hirokawa Takeshi giving a speech. The guy was actually pretty good at it. A huge crowd had already gathered in front of the stage.

"Two? No… there's more than ten."

To avoid being recognized, Ivan changed his appearance into Yuji's face before getting closer. The closer he got to Hirokawa, the more brainwaves filled the air, letting him lock onto the positions of ten different parasites.

Five stood right next to Hirokawa as bodyguards. The other five had blended into the crowd.

"Right now, the environment on Earth is being destroyed at an alarming rate. Industrial waste gas from factories, car exhaust, every kind of pollution happens every single day. Protecting the environment has already become a global movement…"

While Hirokawa preached from the stage, Ivan quietly opened his panel and watched the fusion progress.

"Two percent in ten minutes. Not bad. Shame the speech is almost over."

For the next few days, no matter where Hirokawa went to campaign, Ivan was always somewhere in the crowd, quietly farming.

He milked that sheep for four full days straight.

Finally, the fusion progress on his panel hit 100%.

"About fucking time I can leave."

On the way back, Ivan got a call from Sergeant Fujita.

"The tests proved your detection method works extremely well. We'll be rolling it out widely very soon. The higher-ups have also approved all your conditions. If you have any ideas, just tell me anytime."

"Funny you called just now. I just got some intel. There's a parasite nest hidden in the residential district."

The parasites in the residential area might not have come looking for trouble with Ivan, but that didn't mean he wouldn't go looking for them.

Actually, Ivan had no idea that after he killed Shimada Hideo, the parasites held an emergency meeting inside their organization. The whole topic was how to kill Ivan Greevs. Their patience for this parasite-killing bastard had finally run out.

Even though Reiko Tamura argued that Ivan still had research value, the others decided to send the parasites from the residential district to finish him off.

Right now, Hirokawa's faction inside the organization was extremely dissatisfied with Reiko Tamura. A huge rift had formed between them, especially after she gave birth to a human baby.

At first, they had only wanted to test whether parasites could reproduce. Reiko Tamura herself had agreed with that idea in the beginning.

But when the child was born, the result was a massive disappointment.

The baby was completely human.

They had demanded multiple times that Reiko kill the infant, but she always brushed them off with the excuse that it wasn't time yet.

It almost perfectly proved what Ivan had said before.

In the beginning, Reiko really did plan to kill the child. But she found she couldn't bring herself to do it. Some strange emotion had started growing inside her. Sometimes when she looked at herself in the mirror, she even caught herself smiling.

For a parasite that was supposed to have no emotions, it was unimaginable.

Later she read a ton of human materials and discovered that this feeling was apparently called maternal love…

"Is the information reliable?" Tamiya asked carefully over the phone.

"My source is a private detective. I can guarantee it's solid."

Ivan added one more thing. "Friendly reminder, toxins are even more lethal to parasites. You guys should consider using poisoned bullets. I believe the results will be impressive."

With that, he hung up.

Staring at the scenery outside the bus window, the corner of Ivan's mouth curled up slightly.

"Good show's about to start."

...

"Emergency news bulletin. Today, a major toxic gas leak occurred on Kawano Street in the residential district. Tokyo police have sealed off the area. The number of deaths is currently unknown. Several injured have already been rushed to hospitals. The incident is still under investigation. Citizens are advised to stay away from Kawano Street for the time being."

"Looks like the parasites are putting a lot of pressure on the police. They acted surprisingly fast," Ivan muttered, picking up the remote and turning off the TV.

He then grabbed his phone and started searching keywords.

Just as expected, the internet had exploded.

Ivan casually scrolled through the comments. Under one forum thread alone, at least ten people claimed they had personally witnessed the scene.

---"It's not a dangerous gas leak at all like the police said. They were hunting parasites. During the fight with the parasites, a ton of people got killed. You guys didn't see how fucking disgusting they are. Their heads can morph and split into tons of tentacles. It makes you want to puke."

---"Yeah, I happened to pass by there this morning. The cops yanked out one of my hairs. Looks like that method spreading online actually works for identifying parasites."

---"Not only that, I heard from a reliable source that the police are planning to install some kind of X-ray scanning device in crowded places like malls, schools, and intersections. Since a parasite's head structure is different from a human's, they can spot it immediately."

"..."

Ivan read through all the comments. So far, the police's promotion strategy was pretty smart. They were cleverly using people's fear. He was willing to bet that after this incident, the standard greeting between people would change from "hello" to "let me pull out one of your hairs."

He had just put his phone down when Shinichi called.

"Did you see the gas leak incident in the residential district? It's all over the internet now. Everyone's saying the police went to war with the parasites and took heavy casualties. I'm worried this police operation might trigger a big counterattack from the parasites. If that happens, a lot of innocent people are going to die."

Shinichi sounded anxious as hell.

"Do you really think the parasites would just stop killing if the police did nothing? That's fucking delusional. The police aren't idiots. Since they chose to act, they obviously knew there would be a price. They understand that parasites hiding in the shadows are way more dangerous than the ones out in the open."
