The rain finally stopped.
But the silence it left behind was worse.
I stood by the window, watching droplets slide slowly down the glass, my reflection staring back at me like a stranger I didn't recognize anymore.
Alive.
That word still didn't feel real.
Neither did anything else.
Behind me, he hadn't moved.
Not once.
I could feel him there without even turning around—his presence filling the room, heavy and cold, like something that didn't belong in this world.
Or maybe…
Like something I didn't belong with.
I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to steady my breathing.
"You said I would weaken if you weren't near," I said quietly. "So what happens if I try to leave?"
Silence.
Then—
"You may try."
I frowned slightly and turned to look at him.
"That didn't sound very convincing."
"It was not meant to be."
Something about that answer made my chest tighten.
"Meaning?"
His eyes met mine.
"You will not get far."
I hated how sure he sounded.
Like he had already seen the outcome.
Like this was just another step in something I didn't understand.
"Watch me," I muttered.
Before I could second-guess myself, I grabbed my jacket and headed toward the door.
I needed space.
Air.
Distance.
Anything that made this feel less real.
My hand wrapped around the handle.
For a second, I hesitated.
That pull inside my chest flickered.
Warning me.
Begging me not to do this.
I ignored it.
And opened the door.
The hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of silence that pressed against your ears and made your thoughts louder than they should be.
I stepped out.
One step.
Then another.
Behind me, I could feel him watching.
Not stopping me.
Not following.
Just… waiting.
Fine.
Good.
Let him wait.
I walked faster, my footsteps echoing faintly as I moved down the hall. Each step felt heavier than the last, like I was pushing against something invisible.
By the time I reached the elevator, my breathing had already started to change.
Too fast.
Too shallow.
"No…" I whispered, pressing a hand against my chest.
The pull was stronger now.
Not gentle anymore.
Sharp.
Demanding.
Like something inside me was stretching too far.
The elevator doors slid open.
I stepped inside quickly and pressed the button for the ground floor.
The doors closed.
And the moment they did—
Pain hit.
I gasped, doubling over slightly as something twisted inside my chest.
Not physical.
Not exactly.
But real enough to steal the air from my lungs.
"Stop…" I whispered, gripping the side of the elevator.
My vision blurred.
The lights above flickered.
For a split second, everything went dark.
And in that darkness—
I felt it.
Something else.
Not him.
Not the connection.
Something different.
Cold.
Watching.
Waiting.
My head snapped up.
"What… was that?"
The elevator lights came back on with a harsh flicker.
I looked around quickly.
Empty.
There was no one else inside.
But the feeling didn't go away.
It lingered.
Like something had noticed me.
A soft whisper brushed against my ear.
"You don't belong…"
I froze.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
"Who's there?!" I spun around, my voice shaking.
Nothing.
Just silence.
But I knew what I heard.
I knew what I felt.
The elevator dinged.
The doors slid open.
I stumbled out, my legs unsteady, my breath uneven.
The lobby was empty.
Too empty.
The lights flickered faintly, casting long shadows across the floor.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
I turned toward the exit, forcing myself to move.
One step.
Then another.
The closer I got to the door, the stronger that feeling became.
That presence.
That thing.
Watching me.
"You shouldn't be here…"
The whisper came again.
Closer this time.
Right behind me.
I spun around—
Nothing.
But the air felt colder.
Heavier.
Like something was standing right there… just out of sight.
My pulse raced.
"Stop it," I whispered. "Just stop…"
But it didn't.
A shadow flickered along the wall.
Too fast.
Too unnatural.
My breath caught.
"What is happening to me?"
The moment the words left my mouth—
The front door slammed shut.
Hard.
The sound echoed through the entire lobby.
I jumped, my heart nearly stopping.
"No… no, no…"
I backed away slowly, my eyes darting around the room.
Then—
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
A sharp, icy breath brushed against my neck.
"You took what wasn't yours…"
My entire body locked up.
I couldn't move.
Couldn't breathe.
Couldn't even scream.
The presence was right behind me now.
Closer than anything should be.
A hand—
Cold.
Not human.
Brushed lightly against my arm.
And suddenly—
The pain in my chest spiked.
Stronger than before.
Violent.
Unbearable.
I gasped, collapsing to my knees as the connection inside me twisted painfully.
Too far.
I went too far.
My vision darkened again.
My body trembled uncontrollably.
"I… can't…" I choked out.
The presence leaned closer.
I could feel it.
Feel its breath against my skin.
"You are not meant to live…"
The words echoed through me.
And for a second—
I believed them.
Maybe this was the correction.
Maybe this was how it ended.
Not with him.
But with something worse.
Something that shouldn't exist at all.
A shadow moved in front of me.
Tall.
Dark.
Not him.
This one felt wrong.
Twisted.
Hungry.
It reached toward me.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
And I knew—
If it touched me—
I wouldn't come back again.
My chest tightened painfully.
The connection inside me snapped violently.
And then—
It happened.
A force yanked me backward.
Hard.
Like something invisible had grabbed me and pulled me out of reality itself.
The lobby vanished.
The darkness shattered.
And I slammed back into something solid.
Warm.
Real.
My eyes flew open.
I was back in my apartment.
Collapsed against him.
His arm wrapped tightly around me, holding me upright.
My breathing was wild, uneven, my body shaking uncontrollably.
"What… was that?" I gasped.
His grip tightened slightly.
For the first time—
There was something different in his expression.
Not calm.
Not distant.
Something darker.
Something dangerous.
"They found you."
My heart dropped.
"Who?"
His eyes shifted slightly, as if listening to something I couldn't hear.
"Something that should not have noticed you yet."
Fear curled tightly in my chest.
"Yet?"
His gaze returned to mine.
Sharp.
Focused.
"Because of what I did… you are no longer invisible to them."
My breath hitched.
"What does that mean?"
"It means," he said slowly, "you are now part of a world you were never meant to see."
The room felt colder.
Smaller.
More suffocating than before.
"And those things…" I whispered. "What are they?"
His expression darkened further.
"Hunters."
The word sent a chill straight through me.
"And you," he continued, his voice low, "are now their target."
Silence filled the room.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
I stared at him, my heart racing, my mind struggling to keep up.
"I almost died… again," I said weakly.
"You would not have returned this time."
That answer hit harder than anything else.
My hands trembled as I looked down.
At myself.
At the life that didn't feel like mine anymore.
"This isn't just about us anymore, is it?" I asked.
"No."
The certainty in his voice made my stomach twist.
"This is only the beginning."
And somehow…
I knew he was right.
Because out there—
In the shadows I couldn't see—
Something was waiting.
Watching.
And this time…
It wasn't just him I had to fear.
