Chapter 23 - Primal Stirrings

The lingering fragrance of clear tea still wreathed their lips and teeth, yet the silence within the cabin grew increasingly thick, heavy with palpable tension.

Rover's gaze never once left Changli. He watched her slightly lowered eyelashes, the tips of her ears still dusted with a faint pink flush of shyness, and the pale, slender wrist exposed as she poured the tea.

Changli could feel the scorching heat of his stare resting against her skin as if it had physical weight, causing her newly steadied heartbeat to fall into disarray once more.

She set the teapot down, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the warm rim of her teacup, desperately searching for a topic to break the nerve-wracking silence.

"This Cloud Peak Mist Sprout... its annual yield is exceptionally low. Only the peak of Mt. Firmament can nurture a small harvest..." Her voice was softer and sweeter than usual, laced with an almost imperceptible tremble.

"Mm. It suits you perfectly," Rover suddenly spoke up, interrupting her introduction to the tea leaves. His voice was deep and magnetic. "Crisp, profoundly distant, and leaving behind an endless, unforgettable aftertaste."

They didn't say much else. A simple, occasional exchange of glances conveyed more than a thousand words ever could.

The teapot was refilled twice. Outside the window, the daylight shifted silently without them noticing. The bright sunlight reflecting off the sea of clouds gradually deepened into the warm, golden radiance of late afternoon, before softening further, outlining the distant mountain peaks with a faint golden rim.

The clouds thickened, flowing sluggishly. Time itself seemed to slow its pace within this isolated mountain cabin, pausing solely to preserve this rare, perfect tranquility.

As Changli raised her hand to pour him what must have been his umpteenth cup of tea, her gaze inadvertently drifted to the window. Noticing the darkening sky, the corners of her lips curved upward. "Time in the mountains always slips away so silently," she murmured.

Rover followed her gaze, equally moved. "Sitting across from the master of this domain makes one forget the passage of time entirely."

This thinly veiled compliment caused Changli to lower her eyelashes, a soft smile gracing her lips. She set the teapot down. Her fingertips lingered on the cooling porcelain cup for a moment, as if she had finally made a monumental decision.

She lifted her eyes. They swirled with a light that was both gentler and far bolder than before. Her voice was even softer now, yet laced with an undeniable, proactive intent. "It seems... we likely won't make it back down the mountain before nightfall. Deep in the clouds like this, the wind and dew grow heavy after dark, and the cold seeps into one's bones..."

She paused slightly, her gaze shifting meaningfully back out the window toward the hot spring that was still radiating inviting steam.

"The hot spring outside... taking a soak right now to ward off the cold and ease our fatigue would be perfectly timed."

"Rover..." she called his name softly—sounding half like a reminder, and half like a breathless sigh.

"The tea is finished." Rover stood up. He walked around the small tea table, stopped right in front of her, and extended his hand. "Counselor Changli mentioned earlier that this hot spring has soothing properties. I wonder if I might have the honor of experiencing it for myself?"

His invitation was bold and direct. Palm facing upward, he waited for her response. It wasn't just an invitation to soak in the hot spring; it was an invitation to cross the final boundary between them.

Changli's heart hammered against her ribs like a war drum.

She looked at the hand offered to her, then raised her eyes to meet his. His gaze was firm, gentle, and brimming with anticipation.

The hot spring outside billowed with steam. Silence stretched through the air, rendering every single second agonizingly long.

Finally, Changli lifted her slender fingers. With a fleeting trace of hesitation, they slowly descended, coming to rest in his palm.

His fingertips were slightly cool; hers were incredibly warm. The very second their skin touched, they both gave a faint, involuntary shiver.

Rover immediately closed his hand, tightly wrapping her warm, soft fingers in his grip. With a gentle pull, he drew her up from her cushion.

Without another word, he led her by the hand, walking step by step toward the hot spring outside.

The spring bubbled with heat, its surface rippling as they approached. Surrounded by swirling mist, it looked exactly like an immortal realm isolated from the rest of the world.

Changli stopped at the edge of the pool. Staring at the rising steam, her cheeks burned crimson as she seemingly grappled with her final shred of hesitation.

Rover didn't rush her. He simply let go of her hand. Then, right in front of her, he calmly and naturally began to unfasten his coat.

His movements were unhurried, yet they carried a lethal, magnetic allure.

Changli's breath hitched. Her gaze followed his every move, completely outside of her control.

She watched him shed his black outer coat, revealing the form-fitting gray undershirt beneath that perfectly outlined the lean, muscular contours of his torso.

The temperature of her cheeks spiked so drastically they felt as though they were radiating steam of their own.

As Rover stepped into the hot spring, letting the warm water submerge his solid chest, he turned back to look at Changli, who was still frozen at the edge of the pool. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "The water is perfectly warm... Changli, aren't you coming in?"

His voice was slightly muffled by the thick steam, which only made it sound even more dangerously magnetic.

Changli took a deep breath, looking as though she had finally steeled her resolve.

She turned her back to him. Her slender fingers, trembling ever so slightly, reached up to unfasten the elegant outer garments manifested from her Resonance Forte.

The process was slow, saturated with an indescribable, agonizing mix of shyness and modesty.

Leaning against the edge of the pool, Rover quietly admired the view. A beauty disrobing—even if only seen from behind, framed by the hazy mist—was more than enough to completely captivate a man's soul.

As the final piece of soft, pure white undergarment slipped off her smooth skin, revealing the flawless curve of her snow-white back and her incredibly slender waist, Changli swiftly stepped into the hot spring. She immediately submerged her body into the warm water, leaving only her smooth shoulders and delicate collarbones exposed above the surface.

The water rippled gently. The thick steam blurred their vision, yet ironically sharpened their other senses to a razor's edge.

Rover slowly waded toward her.

The water sloshed with his movements, lapping gently against their bodies.

They stood face-to-face in silence. The distance between them had closed to the point where they could physically feel each other's ragged breaths and pounding heartbeats.

Rover reached out. His fingertips skimmed across the warm surface of the water before lightly making contact with her submerged arm.

The sensation of skin touching skin underwater was far smoother and infinitely more intoxicating than in the open air.

Changli's body went visibly rigid, but she didn't pull away.

She slightly averted her face, her eyelashes fluttering wildly. Underwater, she instinctively crossed her arms over her chest, but the gesture did little to conceal her breathtaking curves, and did absolutely nothing to block his scorching stare.

"Changli." Rover's voice was terribly hoarse. He slowly closed the gap until his chest was practically brushing against her back.

His arms slipped around her from behind. He didn't make any overly aggressive moves, simply wrapping her in a loose embrace, his palms resting gently against her forearms.

It was a deeply intimate posture, trapping her securely between his body and the edge of the pool.

Changli froze entirely. She could vividly feel the heat and the thumping heartbeat radiating from his chest—it burned far hotter than the hot spring itself. Her back felt as though it were catching fire.

"Rover..." Her voice was as faint as a mosquito's hum, sounding half like a desperate plea and half like breathless anticipation.

"I'm here." He whispered directly into her ear. His hot breath brushed against her sensitive earlobe, sending a violent shiver cascading down her spine.

His lips ghosted across the tip of her ear, brushing against it just barely.

Unable to hold back, she let out a tiny, soft whimper. All the tension melted from her body as she went completely slack, leaning her weight fully back against his solid chest.

In that singular moment, her final line of defense utterly collapsed.

Feeling her complete surrender and reliance, he tightened his arms around her waist, pressing her even closer against him.

The two of them leaned against each other in the hot spring, letting the warm water cocoon their bodies. The hazy steam blurred their silhouettes, drawing their hearts infinitely closer.

He gently rested his jaw against the top of her head. The scent of her hair, mixed with the damp mist of the spring, filled his senses.

"Changli..." he called her name again, his voice dropping low, sounding like the most intoxicating words of love.

Changli didn't answer. She simply tilted her head slightly, pressing her burning cheek against the crook of his neck.

It was a posture of absolute trust and complete acceptance.

The smooth water of the hot spring washed away the dust of the world, and dissolved the thick walls around her heart. Within this small pool of water, two hearts finally shattered every last barrier between them, pressing tightly together.

What happened next was as natural as water flowing into a channel.

The searching of fingertips, the meeting of lips—everything blurred into a passionate, feverish haze amidst the rising steam. All that remained were the most primal stirrings and the most tender, lingering intimacy.
