Chapter 30 - The Temple of Time and the Gates of Memory

Location: Ruins of the Temple of Time.

Time: Day 3 – Sunset. They reached the temple. It was pyramid-shaped, constructed from black stone that seemed impervious to the desert heat. The main gate was sealed shut, its surface carved with complex circular inscriptions."Here," Lirion said. "The shard is inside."But the gate wouldn't yield to ordinary keys. It demanded a "temporal sacrifice."An ancient inscription glowed to life on the stone: "The past is the price of the future.""A memory toll," Lirion realized. "The temple will draw from our memories to open the door.""That's dangerous," Elara warned. "We could lose ourselves.""Not if we face it together," Lirion replied. "Hold hands. The Stone will anchor our core identities, but it won't shield us from what we'll see."The four of them locked hands. Lirion pressed his free palm against the cold stone of the gate.A torrent of images flooded their minds.Garek saw himself as a weeping child, failing to ignite his red root.

Elara watched her mother waste away in a sickbed.

Rowan saw himself abandoned in a shadowed corner, utterly alone.

And Lirion saw... his own death. The blood. The collapsing gate. The agonizing final breath. But the Stone intervened.

[Identity Protection Activated. Energy Redirection.]Lirion forced the crushing weight of those memories into the gate, converting psychological agony into raw mana. The team cried out in unison from the splitting headaches, then the massive doors groaned and slowly parted, like the yawning maw of an ancient beast. They collapsed to their knees, gasping for air."Do you still remember each other's names?" Lirion asked, his voice hoarse. They all nodded, though a heavy residue of sorrow lingered in their eyes."Let's move," Lirion said, pushing himself up. "The end is near."
