In the morning air, there lingered an unfamiliar heaviness, as though some old memory had spent the entire night knocking at the window and had now slipped into the room, quietly altering the very atmosphere around it. Arjun picked up the mysterious letter once again. There was a faint trace of moisture on the folds of the paper—perhaps because he had been thinking about it incessantly since the moment he first read it.
The handwriting was beautiful, yet within its calm elegance lurked something deeply unsettling."It would be best to meet Suyash," he murmured to himself.
His phone was in his hand, but he stopped himself from sending a message.
"No… not over the phone. This is not an ordinary conversation. I must show him the letter in person."
Suyash was seated in his chamber, reviewing some files, when Arjun arrived. Sunlight streamed through the glass walls, falling clearly across his face, yet a faint line of worry creased his forehead, as if he had already sensed the weight Arjun carried in his heart without a single word being spoken.
"Oh! You, at this hour?" Suyash asked, pushing his chair back. "Is everything alright?"
Arjun placed the letter on the table without a word. Suyash opened its folds slowly. The moment his eyes fell on the handwriting, his expression grew grave.
"Who sent it?" he asked."There's no name of the sender… the stamp is blurred. It might be from Burdwan."
"And the message inside?" Suyash inquired.
Arjun's gaze dropped to the floor. He was searching for words, as though even his own tongue feared the meaning hidden in that letter."Something is written that cannot be understood without knowing the person behind it. It feels as if someone has known me for a very long time, yet remains invisible. Whoever it is wants to tell me something about myself, while carefully concealing their own identity."
Suyash read every word of the letter once more, as if probing its veins. After a moment, he placed the envelope back on the table and said softly,"Arjun, this is not merely a letter. It is part of some story—and I do not believe it is a pleasant one."
For a while, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of traffic drifting in from outside. Both men remained silent, yet inside each of them, many unspoken voices stirred.
Arjun finally spoke, "Suyash bhai sahab, I am not afraid of what is written in the letter. What frightens me is the possibility that this matter might be connected to Rani or Shreya."
Suyash looked at him intently, listening with deep concern and understanding."Why didn't you want to tell me this earlier?
Why not over the phone?"
Arjun replied in a low voice, "Some things cannot be spoken over the phone, bhai sahab. Certain words require you to see the other person's face while saying them. I was afraid that when I read this out to someone, my voice might betray me. I didn't know what I would do if it failed me at that moment."
Suyash took a deep breath and said, "You did the right thing. In this matter, even the slightest mistake could prove costly. Our case is in a strong position right now. We must tread very carefully. We cannot afford to invite any new complications or troubles at this stage.
The hearing is only three days away. Until then, maintain complete silence. Once we win, we will dig to the very root of this, even if we have to hire a detective.
"Arjun looked at Suyash as though a reassuring hand had been placed on his shoulder."
What do you think? Who could have done this?"
Arjun's voice no longer trembled, but the deep unease within him stood bare and exposed.
Suyash spoke slowly and deliberately, "Whoever it is, they know you extremely well—your relationships, and the vulnerabilities of your past. Perhaps they want to push you onto a path where you will once again have to confront pain, confusion, and fear."
Arjun was startled. "What exactly are you saying?"
In a firm, clear, and composed voice, Suyash replied, "What I am saying, Arjun, is that this letter does not appear to be the work of an ordinary person. Either this individual was once very close to your life, or they are someone who has been watching you from a distance for a long time—never stepping forward."
A coldness crept into Arjun's fingers. His eyes remained fixed on the letter, as though it were staring back at him.
After a brief pause, Suyash said, "Do one thing. Let me keep this letter safely with me. Do not mention it to anyone else—not even to Kavya. At least not until we find out who is behind it."
Even now, Arjun kept glancing at his phone screen. "Any message? Any email?
Has the RTI reply arrived?"
But the screen showed no new notifications.
There was only one message from Kavya, suggesting a meeting at the usual place.
Kavya's short message consisted of just a few words, yet within them lay an invisible hope, an unspoken plea.
Arjun's fingers paused the moment he read it. His heart was being pulled in two directions—one toward Kavya, who was like a serene lake in which he could see his own better, truer self reflected; the other toward the storm of uncertainty that kept returning to his life like a recurring tempest. Shreya and her family had vanished, and in just a few days, the layers of the case would begin to unfold. With the media's coverage and the hunger for TRP, there was no telling what storms lay ahead.
And now, the sudden appearance of this mysterious letter had thrown his mind and heart into fresh turmoil.
He took an unusually long time to reply to Kavya's message. Eventually, he wrote:"I will try my best to come, but I cannot confirm it right now. If I am able to make it, I will let you know in advance."
For a long time, Arjun stared at the phone screen. The word 'Sent' appeared, and at that very instant, a sharp pang settled in his heart. His reply had been neither warm nor entirely cold—it simply hung in that uncertain space where emotions remain unspoken and possibilities quietly take root in the soil of ambiguity.
