Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Shadows of the Truth

The night was unusually quiet, as if the entire city had chosen to hold its breath. Standing alone on the rooftop, Lila stared into the distance, her expression unreadable. There was no fear in her eyes, no hesitation—only calculation. The words she had heard echoed in her mind again and again, refusing to fade.

"Target confirmed."

That single sentence was enough to change everything.

It meant they already knew her. They weren't searching randomly. They had come for her—specifically for her.

Lila clenched her fist, her thoughts racing as the pieces slowly began to connect. The attack on her family, the mysterious silence surrounding the Noir name, the strange behavior of the school, and above all—

Mrs. Carter.

Her name lingered in Lila's mind like a shadow that refused to disappear.

"There's something you're hiding…" Lila whispered to herself, her eyes darkening with determination. "And I'm going to find out."

The next day at school felt strangely normal, almost too normal. Students walked through the hallways, laughing and talking as if nothing had happened. But for Lila, everything had changed. The calm atmosphere felt like a fragile illusion—something that could shatter at any moment.

Inside the classroom, the tension among the group was impossible to ignore.

Ethan leaned forward, lowering his voice as he spoke. "I still don't understand what happened last night. That wasn't normal… not at all."

Ryan nodded slowly, his expression serious. "They weren't random. They knew exactly who they were looking for."

Maya stayed quiet, her fingers nervously gripping the edge of her desk.

Aria, however, couldn't hold back anymore. She turned toward Lila, her eyes filled with questions. "You knew something, didn't you?" she asked softly. "You acted like you were expecting it."

For a brief moment, silence filled the space between them.

Lila finally looked up, her gaze calm but distant. "When the time comes, you'll understand," she said quietly.

That was all.

No explanation. No comfort.

Aria lowered her eyes, a flicker of hurt passing through her expression, though she said nothing more. Later that day, Lila walked alone through the empty corridor. The quiet footsteps echoed faintly against the walls as she moved, her mind still consumed by unanswered questions.

"Still searching, aren't you?"

The voice came from behind her.

Lila stopped.

Slowly, she turned around.

Mrs. Carter stood there, watching her with a faint, knowing smile.

"You can't avoid me forever," Lila said, her tone cold and steady.

Mrs. Carter let out a soft laugh. "And you can't run from the truth forever either."

They stood facing each other, the air between them heavy with unspoken tension.

"Who were they?" Lila asked directly. "The ones who attacked us."

Mrs. Carter's expression didn't change. "They're part of your past," she replied calmly.

"And you?" Lila's eyes narrowed slightly.

Instead of answering immediately, Mrs. Carter stepped closer. "I'm the reason you're still alive."

For a split second, Lila's composure cracked.

"…That's a lie," she said under her breath.

"No," Mrs. Carter said quietly. "That night… the night of the fire… you survived because—"

She stopped.

A small, unreadable smile returned to her lips.

"You're not ready to hear the rest."

Lila's jaw tightened. "I will find out everything."

Mrs. Carter turned away, her voice trailing behind her. "Then keep searching… if you dare."

As the sun began to set, Lila found herself standing in front of the old, abandoned section of the school once again. The air felt colder here, heavier—as if the past itself was lingering within those walls.

This time, she didn't hesitate.

She pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Dust filled the air, and the faint smell of decay surrounded her. Broken furniture and scattered papers lay across the floor, untouched for years.

Then suddenly—

A file slipped from a nearby shelf and fell to the ground.

Lila froze for a moment before slowly picking it up.

Her eyes widened.

On the cover, written in faded letters, were the words:

"Noir Family – Incident Report."

Her heart skipped a beat.

Carefully, she opened it.

Inside were photographs—images of destruction, flames consuming everything, and shadows of people caught in chaos.

And then—

A single line.

"Survivor: Unknown (Female Child)"

Lila's breath caught in her throat.

"…Me?"

The word barely escaped her lips.

Outside the door, hidden in the shadows, someone was watching.

Completely silent.

Completely still.

"She's getting too close…" a low voice whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"We have to stop her."
