Chapter 86 - Competing for Favor

In a great hall within the Pyramid in Meereen, Daenerys, who was studying the history of Westeros, was suddenly startled by the murderous intent in Drogon's mind. She put down her book and turned to see Drogon glaring at an empty corner of the hall, hissing.

Daenerys immediately felt a strange chill. Misande, who was binding a book, and Shireen, who was browsing through one, also noticed Drogon's odd behavior and looked over at him.

Only after the shimmering image of Bran standing in the corner of the wall vanished did Drogon withdraw his gaze. He hadn't expected Bran to inherit the Greenseer's powers so quickly.

Moreover, Bran had seen him through his vision. It was a good thing Drogon had noticed him; otherwise, letting Bran uncover his secrets would not have been a good thing.

This incident reminded him of the time he first arrived at Dragonstone. He had felt a faint sense of being watched back then, but it wasn't as obvious as today. He had thought it was a delusion at the time, but it seemed it wasn't.

The one who spied on him last time couldn't have been Bran. Could it have been the old Greenseer, the Three-Eyed Raven? Drogon wondered.

Turning to the Mother of Dragons and her two companions, who were looking at him in astonishment, Drogon knew they hadn't noticed the spying. He suspected that his Divine Light was what allowed him to see Bran.

*This is the difference between a god and a mortal,* Drogon thought. *Otherwise, he wouldn't have even known he was being watched.*

Though Drogon was wary of the Greenseer's ability to see the past and future, he wasn't afraid. If Bran wanted to learn anything about him, he would have to use Drogon as a medium; otherwise, he would see nothing.

Drogon had already warned Bran: if he dared to peer into his mind again, he would pay a visit. Bran's foresight was formidable, but Drogon knew just as much as he did—and he knew Bran far better.

"Drogon, what happened?" Shireen asked, stepping beside him and gently stroking his back with her small hand.

Seeing Shireen's affectionate gesture, Daenerys's expression instantly soured. She walked over and asked with a forced smile, "Drogon, what did you see?"

Drogon sensed a familiar murderous aura beneath the Mother of Dragons' smile. He quickly took flight, landing on her shoulder and baring his teeth in a grin.

*That's more like it!* Daenerys was very satisfied with his reaction.

Drogon had experienced a woman's jealousy firsthand with his ex-girlfriend in his past life. He had no desire to let the Mother of Dragons harbor any ill will toward Shireen.

Shireen's hand, which had been gently stroking Drogon, suddenly met empty air. She couldn't help but feel a wave of disappointment; she felt she was no happier here than she had been with Drogon on Dragonstone.

Back on Dragonstone, she had learned from Drogon that Queen Daenerys had three dragons in total. She had assumed that with three dragons to attend to, Daenerys wouldn't mind her being close to Drogon.

But arriving in Meereen, she discovered that Drogon's bond with Daenerys was far deeper than with the other two dragons—they were virtually inseparable.

She had known then that she could never be with Drogon the way she had been on Dragonstone, where they could spend all their time together whenever he was free. Now it seemed clear that Queen Daenerys truly did not wish to share Drogon with her.

Noticing Shireen's disappointment, Daenerys immediately felt a pang of guilt. *How could she be jealous of a little girl?* she thought, though she also knew she was no longer a child herself.

She had already learned from Tyrion the reason for Shireen's presence in Meereen. She never imagined Stannis would stoop so low in his pursuit of the Iron Throne, sacrificing even his own daughter.

She could empathize with Shireen's pain at being abandoned by her father, just as she herself had been sold to Khal Drogo by her brother Viserys. Though she and Drogo eventually formed a deep bond, who could ever know the terror and helplessness she felt when she first saw him?

"Shireen, how is the book organization coming along? Have you found any you like?" Daenerys asked with genuine concern, her gaze sweeping over the new volumes acquired from the Great Lord.

As she spoke, she gently lifted Drogon from her shoulder and placed him on the books beside Shireen.

*Am I being treated like a toy?* Drogon sighed inwardly, bewildered by Daenerys's sudden lack of jealousy and her deliberate attempt to bring him closer to Shireen. Still, he cooperated, nudging Shireen's small hand affectionately.

Shireen, who had been feeling a bit down, brightened at Daenerys's question. Seeing the sincerity in the Queen's eyes, her mood improved. Feeling the warmth of Drogon's body, she gently stroked his back and replied, "The books this time are all excellent, Your Majesty. There are several you might enjoy reading."

Shireen loved spending time with Drogon, but she also knew how much Queen Daenerys cherished her little dragon. She couldn't bear to steal what the Queen loved; simply being allowed to play with him occasionally was enough to satisfy her.

Moreover, Queen Daenerys seemed unaware that Drogon could write. This was a secret shared only between the girl and the dragon, and it brought Shireen a flicker of secret delight.

Hearing that there were books for her to read, Daenerys approached the table and prepared to flip through them.

"I've selected these for Your Majesty," Shireen said, moving a stack of books from her left to in front of Daenerys. "You can read these after you finish the *History of the Riverlands* on the table."

Daenerys hadn't expected Shireen to have already chosen books for her. Her heart filled with even more guilt over her earlier jealousy. "Have you decided which subject you'd like to teach?" she asked.

Shireen had not only joined the Citadel but had also become its youngest teacher, thanks to Tyrion's recommendation.

"I want to teach history," Shireen replied softly. She was not only knowledgeable about the History of Westeros but was also an expert on the History of House Targaryen.

"That's wonderful," Daenerys said happily. "I can learn the history of Westeros from you then."

As the Citadel's highest-ranking official, the Lord Chancellor, Daenerys was under immense pressure. She now had to learn statecraft from Tyrion, as well as Westeros's history, geography, and the histories of its various houses, including their sigils and words.

Daenerys had heard the history of House Targaryen recounted by her brother Viserys countless times, but she knew little of Westeros's broader history, let alone the intricate details of its noble houses.

When Shireen learned that Daenerys would be studying history with her, she immediately felt a wave of self-consciousness. Doubting whether her own knowledge was sufficient to teach the Queen, she resolved to brush up on her studies in private.

Shireen's own favorite subject was the history of House Targaryen. Following Tyrion's suggestion, the history curriculum would be divided into three sub-disciplines: the History of Westeros, the Histories of the Great Noble Houses, and the History of House Targaryen. Shireen would serve as the instructor for both the History of Westeros and the History of House Targaryen.

She hoped to use her time with Daenerys, the Targaryen Queen, to verify if any of the family history she had learned was incorrect.

Missandei had long noticed Shireen's fondness for spending time with Drogon, while Queen Daenerys seemed reluctant to see Shireen grow too close to him. Only now, seeing that the tension between them had vanished, did Missandei feel at ease enough to return to her book-binding.
