On top of a relatively high mountain, a military base sat where the trees stopped growing.
The land was all wind-cut stone and pale gravel—a flattened plateau blasted out of a mountainside. Here, a compound filled with houses made of concrete blocks anchored directly into bedrock.
Normally, no storm or other natural disaster would shake them. They were one of the barracks located at the borders. Nothing should've been able to ruin them.
Now, however, they were facing the most dangerous disaster yet.
BANG!!
BOOM!
BOOM!
They thought they were just flares at first.
In reality, it was a small meteorite that fell a few kilometers away from them, causing the ground to shake and the wind to shift. It felt like the plateau itself jumped.
