Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Conversations That Stayed

Time didn't stop for either of them.

It moved quietto shaping them, changing them.

Arjun was now in his final semester.

The last stretch before stepping into the real world. Placements, responsibilities, expectations everything felt closer than ever.

Darini, on the other hand, was in her second year.

Still figuring things out, but no longer the same girl who had left home with just silence and distance.

They had grown.

Individually.

And somehow… together too.

It started with a random message again.

Arjun: "Final semester… feels weird."

This time, Darini didn't reply with just one word.

Darini: "You'll miss it when it's over."

That one sentence turned into a conversation.

That conversation turned into something longer.

And slowly

It became a habit.

They didn't talk every day.

But when they did, it lasted.

Hours sometimes.

From random topics to real ones.

The tone had changed.

No more just notes, classes, or small talk.

Now it was

"What do you actually want in life?"

"Do you ever feel like you don't belong anywhere?"

"Do people ever really stay?"

Arjun wasn't just the cheerful, easygoing guy anymore.

There were things he never said out loud to others

expectations from family, pressure to succeed, the fear of choosing the wrong path.

With everyone else, he joked about life.

With Darini, he spoke about it.

Darini, too, had changed.

She still didn't open up easily.

But with him… it didn't feel like a risk.

She spoke about things she had buried for years

her past, her insecurities, the way people's words had shaped how she saw herself.

She didn't tell everything.

But she told enough

One night, the conversation took a different turn.

Arjun: "Someone in my college… she likes me."

Darini read it.

Paused.

Then replied

Darini: "So?"

Arjun: "I don't feel anything."

A few days later

Darini: "One guy here asked me out."

This time, Arjun paused.

Arjun: "And?"

Darini: "I said no."

They didn't ask each other why.

They didn't need to.

It wasn't jealousy.

It wasn't possessiveness.

But there was something unspoken.

Something that made them both… hesitate.

They could talk about anything.

Life.

Pain.

Dreams.

Fear.

Even darkness.

Especially darkness.

Their conversations became deeper.

Not always light.

Not always easy.

But real

Sometimes, they would disappear again.

Days without messages.

But somehow

They always came back.

What they had was no longer casual.

It wasn't just friendship either.

But it wasn't defined.

Not yet.

Two people, in different cities, living different lives

yet finding comfort in the same place.

In each other's words.

In each other's understanding.

They never said it out loud.

But somewhere along the way

They had become each other's safe space.

And maybe that's where everything starts to change.

To be continued....
