Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Twilight Path - The Gate Guardians

Their departure from the Tower of Light took place at dawn. The twin suns were just rising on the eastern horizon of the desert, painting the dunes in shades of orange and silver. The great doors of the tower opened of their own accord, as if to bid them farewell. Theron, Brynja, and Zephyros stood at the threshold, watching the group depart.

Finis, with his leather pack on his back, his journal at his belt, and Sirius beside him, looked back at the tower one last time. Sirius had grown too large to be carried on his shoulder. The young lion now reached Finis's knee in height, his golden coat gleaming in the sunlight, his small mane ruffling in the wind. His eyes were as sharp and intelligent as his mother's. But most of all, his devotion to Finis had grown. He never left his side for a moment, moving almost like his shadow.

Theron approached Finis. The old scribe's eyes held both pride and concern. "You have found the Twilight Light. This is a power spoken of only in legends throughout the ages. But remember, this power can both save you and destroy you. Maintaining balance requires constant effort. If you hesitate for even a moment, the light or the shadow will seize control of you."

"I understand," Finis said. "But I will use this power to stop the Shadow Legion. I will show them there is another way."

Theron nodded. "I hope you succeed. For if you fail, this world will be plunged into darkness. Or worse, it will be trapped in an endless war between light and shadow."

Brynja approached Torin. The two dwarves looked at each other in silence for a moment. Then Brynja removed the leather pouch from her belt and handed it to Torin. "This is the last relic of the Red Anvil clan. Inside is a piece of the Secret of Iron. If you can decipher it, perhaps you will attain the true power of your ancestors."

Torin took the pouch with trembling hands. "Why are you giving this to me? This is your clan's legacy."

"Because I have no children," Brynja said, her voice thick with emotion. "And the Hammerspine clan has always been a brother to the Red Anvil. Let this legacy live on through you."

Torin pressed the pouch to his chest. "I swear it. I will unravel the Secret of Iron and restore the honor of our clans."

Zephyros turned to Liriel and Mira. The dragon-descended being spread his wings slightly, and an iridescent light shimmered from his feathers. "You two are bearers of ancient powers. Liriel, you can use the Lament of Light not only as a weapon, but as a means of healing. Remember, that song does not merely destroy darkness; it also mends broken souls. And Mira, the royal seal grants you the power of your ancestors, but true power lies in your heart. Your mother died to protect you. You, in turn, must live to protect."

Mira touched her necklace. Her eyes welled up, but she did not cry. "I wanted to avenge my mother. But now I understand that what matters is not revenge, but keeping her legacy alive. As the last princess of Nephar, I will restore the honor of my people."

Kael was the last. Theron approached him. "You have chosen the hardest path. Leaving the Shadow Legion, confronting your own darkness... This is something few could accomplish. But remember, when you return among them, old habits may resurface. Do not lose yourself."

Kael bowed his head. "I won't. Because I am no longer alone. This group is my new family. To protect them, I will fight my own darkness again if I must."

Finally, Theron turned to Finis. "The fortress of the Shadow Legion lies beyond the Crystal Desert, atop the peaks of the Broken Fang Mountains. To reach it, you must first pass through the Ancient Gate. This gate was built by the last mages of Albaris to halt the Shadow Legion. But now, it is under their control. To cross it, you will need to use the Twilight Light."

Finis pulled out his journal and roughly sketched the route Theron described. "The Ancient Gate... What awaits us there?"

"Unknown. But I do know this: the Shadow Legion knows you are coming. And they will do everything in their power to stop you."

The journey took three days. The Crystal Desert remained merciless, but the group had learned to cope with it. Torin examined the pouch Brynja had given him every night, trying to decipher the ancient runes within. Liriel hummed the Lament of Light to keep the group's spirits high, the vibrations of the song easing their weariness. Mira used the power of the royal seal to sense the desert's dangers in advance, protecting the group from sandstorms and predators. Kael walked in silence, occasionally looking up at the sky and murmuring to himself. Confronting his past had both weakened and strengthened him.

And Sirius... Sirius was the most energetic member of the journey. He was no longer a cub, but a young lion. He raced across the sand, tried to catch Mira's tail, and sometimes walked beside Finis, rubbing his head against his hand. But most of all, he kept watch at night. His ears had grown sharp enough to hear the faintest sound, and his eyes gleamed in the dark. One night, when he heard the distant howl of a wolf, his fur bristled and a deep growl rumbled from his throat. Finis stroked his head to calm him.

"Not yet, Sirius. But soon, the time for battle will come."

On the morning of the fourth day, something appeared on the horizon. At first, they thought it was a mirage—two colossal stone pillars rising from the middle of the desert. But as they drew closer, they realized it was no illusion. The pillars stood at least forty meters high, carved from black volcanic stone. Albaris runes and the symbols of the Shadow Legion were etched together upon their surface. The runes pulsed as if alive, emitting a faint hum. Between the two pillars, the air shimmered like a pool of water suspended in the void, from which dark lightning occasionally flashed.

"The Ancient Gate," Kael said, his voice a mixture of reverence and fear. "To pass through, you will need to defeat the gate's guardians. But be careful. They are no ordinary creatures."

"Guardians?" Torin asked, gripping his axe. "Where are they?"

As if awaiting this question, the shimmering air between the pillars thickened and took shape. First, enormous hands emerged—each the size of a human torso, formed of absolute darkness, with ancient runes burning upon them. Then came arms, torsos, and finally heads. The two figures stepped out of the gate as if crossing a threshold and planted themselves before the group.

Each stood at least five meters tall. Their armor seemed forged from black volcanic stone, yet living shadows constantly writhed across its surface. Their helmets completely concealed their faces; only from the eye-slits seeped an ominous light, a mixture of red and violet. One held a greatsword at least three meters long, its blade wreathed in black flames. The other bore a massive shield mounted on his left arm, and in his right hand, a flail whose chains were woven of shadow energy, its head the size of a human skull.

But most terrifying was the swarm of small shadow creatures writhing at their feet, feeding on their shadows and constantly shifting shape. It was as if the guardians had brought their own army with them.

The sword-bearing guardian stepped forward with heavy strides. The ground trembled with each step, and black smoke rose from his footprints. He leveled his greatsword toward the group. Black flames danced along the blade, casting sparks into the air.

"Turn back," he said. His voice was like a thousand whispers converging within a storm; it came both from afar and from inside one's own head. "This gate is under the protection of the Shadow Legion. Passage without permission is forbidden. Mortals are not permitted to enter the realm of shadow."

Finis stepped forward. In his palms, he gathered the Twilight Light. The light was both gold and silver; warm and cold together. "I am Finis Ferrum, the Last Seed of Albaris, the Bearer of Light. I have come to speak with the leaders of the Shadow Legion. Let us pass."

The guardians hesitated for a moment. The sword-bearer tilted his head slightly. The darkness seeping from beneath his helmet thickened for an instant, as if he were thinking. Then he spoke:

"The Seed of Albaris... We know your light. But this light is not pure. There is shadow within it. Darkness has mingled with light. You belong neither to light nor to darkness. You are an aberration. An anomaly that disrupts the balance. Therefore, we cannot permit you to pass. Your existence is a threat to the order of the Shadow Legion."

The flail-bearing guardian spoke for the first time. His voice was deeper and louder than the other's, as if it came from within a mountain. "Our masters knew you would come. And they commanded us to stop you. Alive or dead. The choice is yours, Bearer of Light."

Torin gripped his axe with both hands and clenched his teeth. "Enough of this chatter. If we're going through, we're going through. If it's a fight you want, let's fight."

And so, the battle began.

The first move came from the flail-bearing guardian. He swung his massive flail toward Torin, extending the chain to its full length. The chain coiled through the air like a serpent, its spiked head aimed directly at where Torin stood. Torin threw himself aside at the last moment. The flail head struck a man-sized boulder behind him and reduced it instantly to dust. Shards of stone and sand sprayed outward like shrapnel. A fragment grazed Liriel's cheek, and blood began to trickle down.

But the true danger was the sword-bearing guardian. He gripped his greatsword with both hands, raised it high, and brought it down toward Finis with all his strength. As the sword cleaved through the air, the black flames spread outward like a dragon's breath. Finis formed a shield from the Twilight Light. When the shield met the sword, the force of the collision sent out a shockwave. Finis's feet slid back ten centimeters in the sand. His arms trembled under the weight of the blow. But the shield held. The balance of light and shadow absorbed and dispersed the strike of pure darkness.

"You are strong," the sword-bearing guardian said, a hint of surprise in his voice. "But it is not enough."

He pulled his sword back and this time aimed a horizontal slash at Finis's waist. Before Finis could shift his shield, Mira intervened. Empowered by the royal seal's speed, she slipped like a shadow beneath the guardian's sword and plunged her short swords into his wrist. The blades slipped through the gaps in the armor, and black ichor sprayed out. But it was not blood; it was pure shadow energy. The moment the ichor touched Mira's hands, her skin began to burn. Mira leaped back in pain, burying her hands in the sand. Her skin was covered in blisters.

"Mira!" Liriel shouted.

But the guardian paid no attention to Mira. The wound on his wrist closed within seconds. The shadow energy constantly renewed him. He swung his sword, this time at Liriel. Liriel had drawn her bow and loosed an arrow. The arrow struck the guardian's chest but could not penetrate the armor. The black flames turned the arrow to ash instantly.

As Liriel retreated, she began to sing the Lament of Light. The first notes of the song swirled around the guardian. His shadow armor began to ripple under the song's vibrations. The guardian slowed for a moment, his movements becoming sluggish. But then, a roar rose from beneath his helmet. "Silence! Do not sing that song!"

He hurled his sword at Liriel. The blade spun through the air, a circle of death closing in on her. Liriel cut off her song and threw herself to the ground. The sword sliced past, severing a lock of her hair, and split a boulder behind her in two. Then, like a boomerang, it returned to the guardian's hand.

Meanwhile, the flail-bearing guardian had targeted both Torin and Kael at once. He swung his chained flail parallel to the ground, attempting to scythe through both of them. Torin raised his axe and struck the flail's chain. Sparks flew, and metal screeched. But the chain did not break. It merely changed direction, now hurtling toward Kael. Kael used his sword like a shield to meet the flail. The impact lifted him off his feet and hurled him five meters backward. He landed flat on his back in the sand, the breath knocked out of him.

Torin seized the opportunity and attacked the guardian's legs. He brought his ancient axe down on the guardian's knee with all his might. The axe pierced the armor and sank into the shadow-flesh beneath. Black ichor gushed out. The guardian roared in pain and kicked, sending Torin flying. Torin soared through the air and crashed onto a rock. One of his ribs cracked, and blood trickled from his mouth.

But Torin's axe remained lodged in the guardian's knee. The creature pulled it free and hurled it to the ground. His wound was slowly closing, but this time it was slower. The Secret of Iron within the ancient axe was disrupting the shadow energy.

"That axe... It is made of ancient steel," the flail-bearing guardian said, a hint of respect in his voice. "But it will not save you, dwarf."

He raised his chained flail high, this time intending to bring it down directly on Torin. Torin lay on the ground, unable to move. His rib was broken, and he struggled to breathe. Just as the flail was about to fall, Sirius intervened.

The young lion let out a battle cry—now a true roar—and leaped onto the guardian's flail-wielding arm. He sank his teeth through a gap in the armor into the shadow-flesh. His mouth filled with black ichor, and his tongue burned. But he did not let go. He began tearing at the guardian's arm with his claws. The guardian thrashed his arm in pain and fury, trying to shake Sirius off. But Sirius clung on with the stubbornness inherited from his mother.

Finally, the guardian seized Sirius with his other hand, gripping the young lion by the scruff of his neck and lifting him into the air. Sirius thrashed, snarled, and snapped his teeth toward the guardian's face. The guardian drew his arm back, ready to dash Sirius to the ground.

"Sirius!" Finis screamed.

In that moment, something inside Finis snapped. The Twilight Light burst uncontrollably from his palms. But this time, the balance of light and shadow was off. The fury within him had caused the darkness to outweigh the light. The light took on shades of violet and black, becoming a destructive energy. Finis shaped this energy into a spear and hurled it at the flail-bearing guardian's arm—the arm that held Sirius.

The spear pierced the guardian's arm and severed it completely below the elbow. The severed limb, still clutching Sirius, fell to the ground. Sirius scrambled free from its grip and leaped away. His mouth was bloody, his tongue burned, but he was alive. He ran immediately to Finis's side.

The flail-bearing guardian stared at his severed arm. Black ichor gushed from the stump. But he did not appear to be in pain. He was merely furious. "You... You have wounded me. This is unforgivable."

A new limb began to form from shadow energy where his arm had been severed. But this time, it was not as fast. The unbalanced state of the Twilight Light had disrupted his regenerative ability.

The sword-bearing guardian grew enraged upon seeing his comrade wounded. "Enough! This game ends here."

He gripped his sword with both hands and raised it high. The black flames concentrated along the blade, forming a pillar of fire. Then he plunged the sword into the ground. The impact split the earth and sent a shockwave racing toward the group. Wherever the shockwave passed, black spikes erupted from the ground. The spikes were the height of a man, coated in venomous shadow energy.

Mira used her agility to weave between the spikes. Liriel hid behind a boulder, but the spikes pierced the rock and grazed her shoulder. Kael tried to cut down the spikes with his sword, but for every one he destroyed, two more sprouted in its place. Torin still lay on the ground, unable to move. The spikes were closing in on him.

Finis consciously wielded the Twilight Light this time. He suppressed his anger and restored the balance. He shaped the light into a dome, enveloping himself and the group within it. When the spikes struck the dome, they melted away into nothing. But this drained Finis incredibly. Each spike that dissolved took a piece of his energy with it.

"Help me," Finis said through gritted teeth. "I can't hold the dome alone."

Liriel began to sing the Lament of Light. This time, she used the song not as an attack, but as a support. The notes of the song blended into Finis's dome, strengthening it. Mira used the power of the royal seal to reach Kael's side and helped him cut down the spikes. Kael released the light within himself, and a weak but determined beam of light began to burn the spikes away.

But the true surprise came from Torin. As he lay on the ground, he had opened the pouch Brynja had given him and begun to read the ancient runes within. The runes glowed upon contact with his blood. Torin's eyes filled with a golden fire. His broken ribs crackled and fused back together. He rose to his feet and retrieved his axe from the ground. The blade of the axe began to burn with a golden flame.

"The Secret of Iron," Torin said, his voice deep and ancient. "Hidden in the heart of fire. Now I understand."

He swung his axe at the flail-bearing guardian. The axe arced through the air and sank into the guardian's newly formed arm. But this time, the wound did not close. The golden flame burned away the shadow energy, destroying it. The guardian roared in pain and retreated.

Seeing his comrade fall back, the sword-bearing guardian pulled his sword from the ground. But it cost him dearly. Finis dropped the dome and focused all his energy into a single attack. He shaped the Twilight Light into an arrow. But this arrow was neither pure light nor pure shadow. It was the perfect balance of both. He loosed the arrow at the sword-bearing guardian's chest, aiming directly for the rune over his heart.

The arrow struck the rune. The rune cracked and shattered. The guardian froze for a moment. The red-violet light beneath his helmet flickered and died. Then, his body began to dissolve into smoke. His sword fell to the ground, the black flames extinguished. Within seconds, the guardian had vanished completely. All that remained were the remnants of the shattered rune smoldering on the ground.

Seeing his comrade's annihilation, the flail-bearing guardian let out a sound of mingled fury and fear. "This... This is impossible. You are merely mortals!"

"But together, we are more," Kael said.

Torin drove his golden-flamed axe into the guardian's chest. The rune shattered. The second guardian dissolved into smoke just like the first. His flail, his chain, his shield—all vanished along with their master.

The battle was over.

The group stood in the middle of the battlefield, gasping for breath. Everyone was wounded. Torin's ribs had healed thanks to the Secret of Iron, but they still ached. Liriel's shoulder was pierced, and she was losing blood. Mira's hands were burned from the shadow energy, covered in blisters. Kael struggled to stay upright with a deep gash across his chest. Sirius's mouth was bloody, his tongue swollen. And Finis had collapsed to the ground, utterly spent, having consumed the last drop of his energy.

But they were alive. All of them.

With the last of his strength, Finis released his healing energy. A weak, flickering golden light enveloped everyone in the group. Wounds slowly began to close. Mira's hands healed, Liriel's shoulder sealed, Kael's gash vanished, and Sirius's tongue returned to normal. But Finis was on the verge of losing consciousness.

Sirius immediately came to his side and laid his head in Finis's lap. He purred, as if to say, "Rest. I am here."

The veil of the Ancient Gate began to shimmer as the guardians vanished. Then, it split down the middle, revealing the path beyond. Through the gate, the jagged peaks of the Broken Fang Mountains were visible. And on the highest peak, a colossal fortress built of black stone, pulsating with dark energy.

The Fortress of the Shadow Legion.

That night, they made camp just before the gate. Finis, after some rest, regained his strength. He pulled out his journal and began to write the details of the battle with trembling hands.

"The guardians' weak point was the rune over their hearts. But reaching that rune was nearly impossible. Their armor was reinforced with shadow energy, and they constantly regenerated. The Twilight Light disrupted their regeneration ability. But what truly made the difference was Torin awakening the Secret of Iron. Ancient steel proved to be the most effective weapon against shadow energy. And when we fought together, each of our strengths complemented the others. Liriel's song, Mira's agility, Kael's experience, Sirius's courage... All were part of this victory."

He turned to a new page.

"But this battle taught me something else as well. Anger disrupts the balance of the Twilight Light. The power I used to save Sirius nearly destroyed me in the process. I must learn to control my emotions. Otherwise, when I face the leaders of the Shadow Legion, my own darkness may consume me."

He closed his journal and looked at Sirius. The young lion slept beside him, occasionally growling in his dreams. Finis stroked his head.

"Tomorrow is a new day. And there is a longer road ahead of us. But as long as you are by my side, Sirius... I fear nothing."

The night wind howled between the pillars of the Ancient Gate. And in the distance, atop the peaks of the Broken Fang Mountains, the fortress waited, a dark threat looming on the horizon. But now, the group was ready. Or so they thought.
