Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

"Come downstairs Yvonne, we're going to be late" Mr. Smith yelled.

We are going to the Tech Vargas Conference. Deep down, I know I wasn't ready for it but my submitted CV would need a quick response if I'm able to meet their boss. I haven't had time to unpack and rest because of what happened last night.

Who brought me home, who tucked me in bed, these thoughts filled my head. I ran out of the room and stretched my head across the hallway hoping to find someone to give me some answers.

"Ma…Ma…Do you know how I got home?"

She walked towards me feeling disappointed, "can you see now that you need me in your life".

Her response wasn't a lie but it got me offended. "Well, thank you mother for showing me that you can be a good person" I replied to her and went back into the room, shutting the door behind me.

I was half dressed but I was looking for my Dior lip oil. It just completes my look. I don't go anywhere without it in my purse. It just adds a different appearance to my face.

"Where the hell are you!" I groaned in anger as I emptied my purse on the bed.

"What are you looking for?" My mom asked, walking into the room.

"My Dior lip oil," I angrily replied.

She placed her hands on the top shelf of the wooden table and picked up the lip oil. She waved it in the air. "All you needed was a little patience because it was just sitting there staring at you," she laughed at me.

I snatched it from her, hurriedly arranged my purse and headed downstairs. "I'm ready." I notified Mr. Smith.

He came into the living room, picked up his car keys from the couch, kissed my mom goodbye, and headed out with me.

"I love your dress" Mr. Smith complimented me.

"Thanks pops." I smiled.

We got into the car and drove off. It was a thirty-minute drive to the event.

My hands began to shake as soon as we arrived at the event. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to sit down with my enemies. The thoughts of my birth father ran through my head again, his death was too sudden to be an accident, and I was certain that Tech Vargas had something to do with it. Mr. Smith tapped me and I suddenly jerked off my thoughts.

"I know how you feel but for now, suppress your emotions, and let's go in." He said.

We walked into the hall and took our seats at the VIP table. Suddenly, a man in his late sixties walked into the room and climbed the podium. He had so much ego. It looked like he was the president of the company. He handled the opening speech. Another man walked in and I was in awe. He was the finest man I've ever seen. His green eyes were sparkling due to the reflection of the sun. He shook hands with the man who gave his speech and they both sat down.

About an hour later, he was asked to give the closing speech. "As the president of Tech Vargas, it gives my heart so much joy to see this multitude gathered here today…"

While he continued, I whispered to Mr. Smith, "I'm going to speak with them after the event so don't wait for me."

I felt so much discomfort as the event came to an end. I wasn't ready to have a conversation with the president. I noticed him leaving and quickly got off my seat. The room was filled with reporters; I fought my way through the crowds and headed towards the podium. As I got close, I paced around the corners where he was interacting with the reporters.

"Thank you so much for coming." I heard him say as he shook one of the reporters and walked towards me. I bent my head immediately and looked at my foot.

"Excuse me Miss."

I knew he was talking to me, but I was so nervous to reply. He tapped me.

"Excuse me Miss. Are you perhaps waiting for me?"

I raised my head and replied nervously,"Yes, I was."

"Very well then.… With what do I owe this gorgeous lady?"

"My name is Yvonne Marilyn Smith by the way and thank you for the compliment. I intend to work for you, and I also submitted my application letter some months ago and I'm yet to receive a response from your company."

"What position did you apply for Miss?"

"Legal advisor."

"Mr. Alfonso over there has been my company's advisor for thirty-five years." He pointed to the man who gave the opening speech.

"Oh…" I sounded disappointed. "Does that mean I can't get an opportunity to work with you?" I continued.

"I didn't say that. You know what Miss Smith, I leave for Italy in two days and I'll have Alfonso review your application and set up your interview with me as my personal assistant," He replied.

"Are you serious?" I couldn't believe what I heard.

Just then, Mr. Alfonso walked towards us and tapped his shoulder as a signal that it was time for him to leave.

"You'll hear from us." He said to me and walked away. I stood there and watched him leave. Apart from being a gentleman, he was a beauty.

"I'm glad it was a success," a voice said from behind me. I turned around quickly and saw that it was my dad.

"I didn't know you waited for me."

"You don't expect me to walk away when you could be in danger."

"I think everything is going okay. I'm going to Italy."

"We are going home."

We both laughed and walked away. We got into the car and headed home. After a while, my phone rang and it was Chloe, but I didn't want to answer it because of my dad, Chloe talks carelessly sometimes.

In about twenty minutes, we were home. I went to my room, took off my shoes and jumped on my bed then dialed Chloe's number.

"Hey babes…sorry, I got busy and…" my words were cut short by the sound from over the phone. She was crying.

"Slow down, calm down, take deep breaths and tell me what's going on," I tried keeping her calm.

"I…I…I got played again, Yvonne. He left me." She spoke up. I could hear the pain through her voice.

"Chloe, calm down. You didn't get played, I'd say you got freed. Let's just take whatever happened to be a cause for celebration. He didn't deserve you." I tried putting my words right to calm her down.

She snorted heavily with laughter, "I needed to hear that, thank you."

"You're welcome. He's an idiot, okay?" I told her.

"Yes. Yes…. So, tell me how it's going for you, have you seen him yet?"

I didn't know which part of what had happened to tell her, I just said anything, "I met her, in fact, I will be going to Italy"

She squealed in excitement, "Yes girl!!! It's finally happening."

"It is. It is…" my voice sank into my throat. Some part of me was not too excited.

"Why do you sound like that? Isn't it what you wanted?"

"He's good looking. He is like the perfect gentleman. I don't know if I want to hurt him or just wrap myself around his arms."

"You can't be liking him already, Yvonne, remember what you're going there for." She yelled at me.

"I didn't forget. I'm only telling you what it's like."

"Men are vampires!!! We're not trying to get used by anyone anymore, okay?" She yelled again.

"I hear you. Thank you for the reminder." I laughed

"Well, I gotta go now, I have some work that needs my attention. I'll call you later."

"I don't trust that later, but I'll be expecting… Also, I miss you, Chloe." I didn't want the conversation to end.

"I miss you too, evil twin. Maybe I should plan my summer vacation somewhere in Italy. How does that sound?"

"Oh, my goodness! I'll love that!"

"Okay, good. Bye now," she ended the call. I threw the phone to the other end of the bed and laid down on the bed with my head facing the wall. I turned my head and stared at the ceiling and placed my two hands on my stomach. The thoughts of Mr. Vargas filled my mind; I was pondering on how I could get him to like me with the hope that my plans won't get ruined. Not long after that perturbing thought of mine, I yawned. It was the call for sleep. I curled up on the bed and slowly slept off.
