The Spindle was a blinding pillar of absolute silence, rotating with a speed that blurred the fabric of the Void around it. Every revolution sent out a wave of white static, a "pulse of unmaking" that chipped away at Clevatess's indigo armor. The King felt his very memories beginning to fray—the smell of the High Citadel's forges, the weight of the silver needle, even Alicia's face—it was all being ground down by the Spindle's rotation.
"You are fighting the engine of the end," the billion-voiced chorus hissed. "To stop the Spindle is to stop the flow of time itself. Would you freeze the universe just to save one broken city?"
Clevatess roared, his voice straining against the vacuum. He threw his spear-needle, the iron chain snapping taut as the weapon pierced the outer layer of the Spindle's white light. The friction was immense; the metal began to glow a cherry red, then a white-hot blinding glare.
"I am not stopping time!" Clevatess growled, his boots grinding into nothingness as he braced himself. "I am giving it a new direction!"
He began to wrap his chains around the rotating pillar, using his own body as a brake. The indigo metal shrieked, sparks of "Stained Reality" flying off into the dark. Each link of the chain was a story, and as the Spindle tried to erase them, the stories fought back, burning brighter the harder they were pressed.
Down in the Citadel, the ground began to tilt. The sky didn't just bleed; it twisted. The obsidian walls Alicia had built started to groan, the "Iron Memory" within them screaming as the past and future collided.
"The King is slowing the world!" the Architect cried, his eyes rolling back in his head. "If he holds on, he'll stall the heart of existence! If he lets go, we are deleted!"
Alicia grabbed the raven-bone pen with both hands, her knuckles white. She could feel the tension in the thread of reality. She didn't look at the swarm or the sky; she looked at the pen.
"He isn't trying to stop it," she whispered, her eyes glowing with a sudden, violet clarity. "He's trying to re-thread it. He's turning the Spindle into a bobbin!"
