Chapter 3 - Awakening

Chapter 3: Awakening

Moonlight shone through Adrian's window onto the stone floor. Tonight, the room felt small and dark.

Outside, the Blackwood compound was completely quiet. The day's celebrations were over. It felt like the world had moved on, leaving him behind.

Adrian lay on his mat. He reached out with shaking hands, trying to feel a spark of warmth or energy. Anything at all.

But there was nothing. Just the same empty feeling he'd carried since the morning's ceremony.

Then, something shifted.

It started as a faint pressure in his head and a tightness in his chest. His vision blurred, and the room seemed to bend under a heavy weight.

It wasn't sudden. It was just slow, steady, and unstoppable.

It felt like the room was holding its breath, pressing down on him from all sides.

He tried to breathe, but his lungs were heavy. He tried to move, but his limbs felt weighed down by a strange gravity. The space around him rippled, like something ancient was finally waking up.

Then, it appeared.

There was no flash of light, no glowing screen, and no ringing in his ears.

It was just him.

But Adrian knew it was more than a reflection. Words drifted clearly into his mind, as if they had always been there:

[Existence Recognized.]

[Authority: Shadow.]

[Path: Sovereign.]

As he blinked, a figure stepped out of the darkest corner of the room.

It didn't just copy him. It stood on its own a solid, breathing person that turned to look directly into his eyes.

Adrian slowly pushed himself up, his muscles tense. The clone moved too, but not in the exact same way. It shifted its weight independently, testing its footing and the space between them.

'I don't know if it's me or something else', Adrian thought, his heart pounding.

The figure tilted its head. It didn't make a sound, but its eyes were sharp and alert. It was studying him just as closely as he was studying it.

Adrian took a hesitant step forward. The clone moved too, but not in the exact same way. When they reached out, their fingers brushed.

The touch was solid and warm. It wasn't a ghost or an illusion. It was real.

Adrian slowly walked in a circle around the figure. The clone turned with him, keeping its distance, its eyes never leaving him. Talking out loud felt useless. They were communicating entirely through thought.

They circled each other in the dim light, two identical bodies watching for the smallest change.

Suddenly, the clone shifted its stance, taking a pose Adrian hadn't even thought of making. The movement caught him off guard, and he froze.

He held his breath. This wasn't a mirror or a shadow. It was a separate person—alive, thinking, and acting on its own.

Adrian lost track of time. His mind raced with a mix of fear, curiosity, and disbelief.

He decided to test it. Raising his hand slightly, he focused his mind on the idea of moving.

The clone reacted. It didn't just perfectly copy him; it understood the thought and adapted. It was learning.

'Who are you?' Adrian thought, afraid of what the answer might be.

The response didn't come out loud. It echoed clearly inside his mind.

"...I am you."

Adrian stumbled backward, tripping over his mat before catching himself against the cold stone wall.

A shiver ran through his whole body.

It wasn't just fear or wonder. It was a deep, unsettling sense of recognition. For the first time in his life, something existed that truly understood him. Something alive and breathing, with a growing strength that might one day surpass his own.

Moonlight cut across the floor, splitting the room into light and shadow. The clone stood in the dark, waiting and watching.

Adrian stared at it. Years of being mocked and keeping his head down told him to bury this secret where no one would ever find it. But he didn't move. He was too curious.

He stepped forward and circled it again. The clone moved with him, but entirely on its own terms. It breathed. It thought. It was real.

As the room grew quiet, Adrian realized exactly what this meant. Everything had changed, and there was no going back. He wouldn't be a ghost on the edges of the clan anymore. He wouldn't be powerless or invisible.

Outside, the winter wind scraped against the stone walls of the servants' quarters. But inside, something wild had finally woken up.

Adrian caught his breath, his mind racing with possibilities. But through all the chaos in his head, one thing was absolutely clear: he wasn't alone anymore.

A heavy silence filled the room. The distance between them seemed to disappear, and they formed the exact same thought at the exact same time.

"Who are you?" Adrian asked out loud.

"I am you," the clone replied quietly in his mind. And with that, his new path began.
