Chapter 17 - CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Power, Presence, And Old Enemies

The moment Hazel Vale signed the final approval form, she leaned back in her chair with quiet satisfaction.

Another decision made.

Another life changed.

"Mira Samuel – Junior Project Assistant."

Hazel smiled softly as she looked at the name.

Her roommate.

Her only real support during the darkest days at Ravencrest Elite University.

The one who had seen her cry silently at night…

The one who had shared food when there was barely enough…

The one who had never once made her feel small.

Hazel picked up her phone.

"Mira," she said the moment the call connected, her voice warm. "How would you like to work at Black Global Empire?"

Silence.

Then—

"Hazel… stop joking."

"I'm not."

Another pause.

"…You're serious?"

Hazel smiled. "Pack your things. You start next week."

The scream that followed made Hazel laugh softly.

And for a moment—

She wasn't Chief Manager.

She was just a girl… sharing good news with someone who deserved it.

A week later, Mira stood in the grand lobby of Black Global Empire, eyes wide, practically vibrating with disbelief.

"This place is… insane," she whispered.

Hazel chuckled. "You'll get used to it."

Mira turned to her slowly. "You got used to this?"

Hazel didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was—

She hadn't just gotten used to it.

She had earned her place in it.

"I grew into it," she said finally.

Mira studied her for a second… then smiled.

"I'm proud of you."

Hazel's chest tightened slightly.

"Come on," she said, brushing it off gently. "Let me show you your department."

Hazel didn't treat Mira like a favor.

She treated her like an opportunity.

She trained her.

Guided her.

Corrected her when needed.

And supported her—just enough to help her stand on her own.

From across the floor, Lucian watched.

Silent. Observant.

His gaze lingered on Hazel longer than necessary.

There was something deeply satisfying about seeing her like this—

Leading.

Building.

Lifting others up.

"She chose well," he murmured to himself.

Because anyone Hazel trusted…

He would watch closely.

Two weeks later, Hazel dragged Mira out of the office.

"Enough work," Hazel said firmly. "We're going shopping."

Mira blinked. "Shopping… where?"

Hazel smirked slightly.

"You'll see."

The boutique district of Ravencrest City was nothing short of luxury.

Glass displays.

Designer labels.

Soft music floating through polished spaces.

Mira froze the moment they stepped inside the first store.

"Hazel… I can't afford anything here."

Hazel didn't even pause.

"You don't need to."

Mira turned sharply. "No. Absolutely not. I'm not letting you spend money on me like this."

Hazel crossed her arms slightly.

"Did you share your last meal with me when I had nothing?"

Mira hesitated. "…That's different."

"No," Hazel said softly. "It's not."

A pause.

Then—

"Let me do this for you."

Mira exhaled slowly… then gave in.

"Fine," she muttered. "But I'm choosing simple things."

Hazel smiled.

"We'll see about that." 😏

Hours passed.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Bags.

Jewelry.

Mira transformed right before Hazel's eyes—

From a struggling graduate…

To a woman who belonged in the world Hazel now lived in.

"You look amazing," Hazel said honestly as Mira stepped out in a fitted outfit, her confidence slowly catching up to her reflection.

Mira turned, staring at herself.

"Is that… really me?"

Hazel smiled softly.

"Yes."

And then—

The atmosphere shifted.

"Wow…"

A familiar voice.

Sharp. Mocking.

Poison wrapped in silk.

Hazel didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Ivy Clarke.

Slowly, Hazel faced her.

Ivy stood there in designer heels, her usual perfect image intact—but her eyes…

Her eyes burned.

"Well, well," Ivy said, her lips curling slightly. "Look who climbed her way up."

Mira stiffened beside Hazel.

But Hazel?

She didn't flinch.

"Ivy," she said calmly.

No fear.

No tension.

Just acknowledgment.

Ivy's gaze flicked to Mira, scanning her from head to toe.

"And now you're… bringing strays into your little empire?"

Mira's jaw tightened.

But before she could speak—

Hazel stepped slightly forward.

Subtle.

Protective.

"Be careful," Hazel said quietly.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

But firm enough to shift the air.

Ivy blinked.

That was new.

"Or what?" Ivy challenged, crossing her arms.

Hazel tilted her head slightly.

"For someone who lost… you're asking a lot of questions."

Silence.

Mira's eyes widened slightly.

Ivy's expression cracked—just for a second.

Because that hit.

Exactly where it should.

"You think you've won?" Ivy said, her voice sharper now.

Hazel didn't react emotionally.

Didn't rise to it.

"I didn't compete," she replied simply.

That was worse.

Much worse.

Ivy let out a soft, humorless laugh.

"You're standing in his world, Hazel. Don't forget that."

Hazel's lips curved slightly.

Calm. Certain.

"I'm standing in my place," she said.

And that…

That was the final blow.

Ivy's eyes darkened.

Because for the first time—

Hazel wasn't reacting.

She wasn't shrinking.

She wasn't surviving.

She was owning it.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," Ivy said coldly before turning and walking away.

Mira exhaled sharply the moment she was gone.

"Okay… I officially hate her."

Hazel let out a soft breath.

"She's not done."

Mira looked at her. "And you?"

Hazel's gaze shifted slightly.

Calm. Focused.

Stronger than ever.

"I'm not the same person she used to fight."

That evening, as Hazel returned to the penthouse, Lucian was already waiting.

He didn't ask.

He already knew.

"You saw her," he said quietly.

Hazel nodded.

"And?"

Hazel stepped closer.

Unshaken.

"I handled it."

Lucian's eyes softened slightly.

A dangerous kind of pride settling in his chest.

"I know you did," he murmured.

And as he pulled her gently into his arms—

There was no fear.

No hesitation.

Only one truth left standing.

Hazel Vale wasn't surviving anymore.

She was unshakable.
