Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FIVE

SignedIntoDarkness

The room felt too small.

Too bright.

Too… suffocating.

Hazel Vale stared at the contract in her hands, her fingers trembling slightly against the smooth black cover.

Black Global Empire.

The name alone carried weight.

Power.

Control.

Danger.

Her pulse pounded loudly in her ears as she flipped through the pages.

Legal terms blurred together.

Clauses.

Conditions.

Language too complex, too precise—

Too intentional.

"This is just a standard sponsorship," Ivy said lightly beside her, crossing her arms. "Don't overthink it."

Hazel didn't respond.

Because something inside her—

Was screaming.

This wasn't standard.

Nothing about this felt normal.

Her eyes moved quickly across the page—

Until they stopped.

And everything inside her went still.

Clause 7: Personal Representation Agreement

Hazel frowned slightly.

What…?

She read further.

The signee agrees to act as the exclusive public companion of the CEO of Black Global Empire for a fixed contractual period.

Her breath caught.

No.

Her eyes scanned faster now.

Heart racing.

Hands shaking.

The signee will maintain appearances consistent with a romantic relationship in public and corporate environments.

The words hit harder this time.

Romantic…

Relationship…?

Her vision blurred slightly.

This wasn't sponsorship.

This—

Was something else entirely.

"Ivy…" Hazel's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Yes?"

"This… this isn't what you said."

Ivy frowned slightly, clearly annoyed.

"What are you talking about?"

Hazel turned the page toward her.

Her finger pointing.

"Read this."

Ivy glanced at it.

Quickly.

Carelessly.

Then shrugged.

"It's just legal wording. These things are always dramatic."

Hazel stared at her.

No.

Ivy didn't know.

She didn't understand what this really was.

Which meant—

This wasn't her plan.

This was something else.

Something bigger.

Something far more dangerous.

"I'm not signing this," Hazel said, her voice shaking—but firm.

A ripple moved through the small crowd.

Whispers rising again.

Ivy's expression hardened instantly.

"Excuse me?"

"I said I'm not signing it."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Because this—

Was not what Ivy expected.

Hazel was supposed to feel pressured.

Cornered.

Grateful for the "opportunity."

Not refuse.

"Do you have any idea what you're rejecting?" Ivy asked quietly, stepping closer.

Hazel swallowed.

"Yes."

And no.

But enough to know—

She couldn't do this.

"I'm not interested."

The words landed like a challenge.

And Ivy didn't take challenges lightly.

Her smile returned.

But this time—

It was cold.

"Careful, Hazel," she said softly. "Opportunities like this don't come twice."

Hazel's grip tightened on the folder.

"Then I'll survive without it."

A mistake.

Because Ivy's eyes darkened.

"You think you have a choice?" she asked quietly.

Hazel's heart pounded.

"Yes."

"Then you're more naive than I thought."

"Sign it."

The voice cut through everything.

Low.

Calm.

Absolute.

Hazel froze.

Because she knew that voice.

Knew it instantly.

Slowly—

She turned.

And the entire room shifted.

Lucian Black stood at the entrance.

Not rushed.

Not angry.

But completely in control.

Power moved with him as he walked forward.

Measured.

Deliberate.

The crowd parted without being told.

Silence deepened.

Even Ivy stepped back slightly.

For the first time—

She looked uncertain.

"Mr. Black," she said quickly, forcing composure. "I was just—"

"You were creating noise."

The words were quiet.

But final.

Ivy fell silent.

Lucian's gaze moved once.

Briefly.

Dismissively.

Then—

It landed on Hazel.

And didn't move.

"Why are you refusing?" he asked.

Hazel's breath caught.

Because this time—

There was no distance.

No barrier.

No escape.

"It's not what I agreed to," she said, her voice unsteady.

A pause.

Then—

"Read it properly," he said.

"I did."

"Then you understand it."

Her heart raced.

"Yes."

Silence stretched.

Dangerous.

"And you still refuse?" he asked.

Hazel swallowed.

"Yes."

The word echoed louder than it should.

Around them, the tension snapped tight.

Because no one—

No one—

Spoke to Lucian Black like that.

For a moment—

He said nothing.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Hazel's breath caught again.

Her body instinctively tensed.

"You walked into this willingly," he said quietly.

Her heart pounded.

"I didn't know—"

"You signed nothing yet," he interrupted smoothly. "Which means you still have a choice."

A pause.

Then his voice dropped slightly.

"But understand this clearly."

Hazel's pulse spiked.

"If you walk away…"

Silence.

Heavy.

"…you walk away from every opportunity connected to me."

Her stomach dropped.

"And if I sign?" she asked softly.

His gaze didn't waver.

"You don't get to walk away at all."

Her breath hitched.

There it was.

The truth.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

A trap—

Either way.

Hazel's mind raced.

Freedom…

Or control.

Safety…

Or danger.

Her fingers tightened around the pen.

Everyone was watching.

Waiting.

Judging.

And slowly—

With a trembling breath—

Hazel Vale made her choice.

She signed.

The sound of pen against paper echoed louder than anything else in the room.

Final.

Irreversible.

Silence followed.

Then—

Lucian reached forward.

Took the contract from her hands.

His fingers brushed hers briefly.

Warm.

Steady.

Dangerous.

His gaze held hers for one second longer than necessary.

Then—

He turned.

"It's done."

Ivy blinked.

Confused.

"Wait," she said. "That's it?"

Lucian glanced at her.

And for the first time—

There was something almost… coldly amused in his eyes.

"You wanted her noticed," he said.

A pause.

"She is."

Ivy frowned.

Something wasn't right.

"What exactly did she sign?" she asked.

Lucian's gaze returned to Hazel.

Slow.

Intentional.

"Something far beyond your understanding."

And that's when it hit.

Ivy's expression shifted.

Not fully.

Not clearly.

But enough.

Because for the first time—

She realized—

She had just played a game…

And lost control of it completely.

Hazel stood there.

Heart racing.

Hands still trembling.

Because deep down—

She knew something too.

She hadn't just signed a contract.

She had stepped into his world.

Completely.

And Lucian Black—

Was not a man anyone walked away from.
