"The Paradox of Record"

CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENT WITNESS

The air inside the church was heavy.

It wasn't just silence—it was a presence, slowly pressing down on Fray's chest, squeezing every breath he took.

He hid behind the long pews, his body trembling slightly. Not just from fear—but from the strange sensation of not being himself.

He still couldn't fully accept it.

This wasn't his body.

This wasn't his life.

Yet here he was.

Alive.

He gripped the gun tightly.

The metal was cold, but it was the only thing giving him a sense of control in this chaotic situation.

Before him, the man in black stood—calm, resolute, like a shadow with a life of its own.

And facing him…

The monster.

The former priest.

The priest's severed arm moved.

It wasn't just movement—it seemed to have a mind of its own.

Slowly, from the wound, bones began to sprout.

Long.

Sharp.

Like spider legs.

Blood no longer flowed normally—it moved, crawling across the monster's skin as if following its own will.

"He isn't dead yet…" Fray whispered, his voice barely audible.

Suddenly—

The monster roared.

"RRRRAAAAAHHHH—!!"

The scream exploded inside Fray's head.

It wasn't just sound—it was a force shattering his mind.

He clutched his head.

"Ahh—!!"

It felt like thousands of voices were whispering in his ears at once.

Words he couldn't understand.

Yet he felt their meaning.

Agony.

Rage.

Madness.

In an instant—

All sound vanished.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

But within that silence—

He saw something.

Shadows.

Many of them.

Standing all around him.

Motionless.

Faceless.

Eyeless.

Yet he knew they were looking at him.

"Join us…"

A whisper echoed in his mind.

It didn't come from outside.

It was from within.

"No more pain…"

"No more body…"

"No more limits…"

Fray bit his lip until he tasted blood.

"No… this isn't real…" he muttered, forcing himself to stay calm.

But the voices—

Would not stop.

Slowly, he saw himself.

But it wasn't normal.

His skin was torn apart.

His eyes were blazing.

His body… changing.

"This… isn't me…"

"You cannot escape it…"

Suddenly—

A loud crash jolted him out of the illusion.

"Move if you want to live."

The cold voice of the man in black reached him.

Reality snapped back.

The monster was right in front of the man in black.

Its claws struck down—

BOOM!

The church floor cracked and shattered. Stones flew everywhere.

But at the last second, the man in black evaded—fast, almost invisible to the naked eye.

He countered instantly.

A slash.

Swift.

Clean.

But—

The monster blocked it using its bone-like spider legs.

CLANG!

Steel collided against bone.

The sound was like the screech of something that should never exist.

Fray swallowed hard.

This was no fight between ordinary humans.

"If I run… will I survive?"

The question entered his mind.

He looked at the church door.

Far away.

And—

Locked.

This wasn't just a battle.

It was a prison.

"If I run… I leave him behind…"

He looked at the man in black.

He didn't know who he was.

But—

This man had saved his life.

"If I stay… I will die."

One second.

Two seconds.

His grip on the gun tightened.

"If I'm going to die anyway… I choose how."

Slowly, he took bullets from his pocket.

His hands were shaking.

Not just from fear—

But from an indescribable pressure.

One.

Two.

While he reloaded—

The battle grew even more intense.

The monster attacked again.

Faster.

More violent.

It lunged forward—

Like an uncontrollable storm.

But the man in black—

Did not retreat.

In a blink—

He vanished.

And reappeared behind the monster.

A vertical slash.

SHHK—

The monster's body was split in two.

Yet—

It wasn't over.

Its body moved.

As if unharmed.

The head—

Slowly reattached itself back into place.

"It's not enough…" Fray whispered.

His heart pounded violently.

"This isn't normal…"

In that moment—

He realized.

"This isn't a fight of strength…"

"…it's a battle of whatever power they possess."

Suddenly—

The monster roared again.

Louder.

Deeper.

"RRRROOOOAAARRR—!!"

The shockwave hit Fray directly.

Blood flowed from his nose.

From his ears.

From his eyes.

"Gah—!!"

He fell to his knees.

The world spun wildly.

But—

He did not pass out.

"I won't… fall…"

Before him—

He saw the man in black thrown violently against the wall.

He crashed down.

Blood splattered everywhere.

"No…"

The monster slowly approached him.

Every step it took—

Was like death drawing near.

It raised its hand.

Ready to strike the final blow.

In that moment—

Everything stopped for Fray.

Silence.

One breath.

One decision.

He raised his gun.

Aimed at the head.

"If I die…"

"…I'm taking you with me."

He pulled the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet hit.

Direct hit.

The monster's head snapped back.

Its body—

Froze.

And—

Collapsed.

Silence.

No movement.

No breathing.

It did not rise again.

Fray fell heavily to the floor.

His entire body was shaking uncontrollably.

"Is it… dead…?"

No answer.

To the side—

The man in black lay motionless.

"This can't be…"

Fray forced himself to stand.

One step.

Two steps.

He almost fell.

But he pushed forward.

He approached the monster's body.

Kicked it.

No reaction.

Pushed it.

Still nothing.

"It's dead…"

For the first time—

He took a deep breath.

But—

In that very instant—

There was light.

Two lights.

One—colored blue.

One—colored red.

They emerged from the two bodies.

"What the…?"

The orbs of light floated in the air.

Silent.

Yet—

Terrifying.

Slowly—

They merged together.

And—

Suddenly—

They shot straight toward him.

"No—!"

Too late.

They struck him.

And in an instant—

They entered his body.

"AAAAHHHH—!!"

Agony exploded inside his skull.

It felt like thousands of memories were being forcefully injected into his mind.

He couldn't stop it.

He couldn't understand it.

"No… no… no…!"

He clutched his head in pain.

The world turned red.

Then black.

Then fragmented pieces.

Until finally—

He collapsed completely.

And was swallowed by darkness.

To be continued...
