Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Moment That Shouldn’t Happen

Some moments are not meant to happen.

Not because they are impossible…

But because once they do, nothing remains the same.

Ayan had always been careful.

Careful not to get too close.

Careful not to cross a line that did not belong to him.

Careful not to turn a silent feeling into something real.

Because reality…

Was dangerous.

For days, he had kept his distance.

Watching her from afar.

Living with the quiet ache that had become a part of him.

Convincing himself that this was enough.

That seeing her… was enough.

But fate…

Has a way of breaking the rules we create for ourselves.

It was late afternoon when everything shifted.

The sky was pale, almost colorless, as if the world itself was holding back emotion. The air carried a strange stillness, the kind that comes before something unexpected.

Ayan stood near the same street again.

Not waiting.

Not hoping.

Just… there.

Or at least, that's what he told himself.

The crowd moved around him in its usual rhythm. People passing by, voices blending into noise, life continuing without pause.

And then—

He saw her.

Zoya.

She was walking alone this time.

No one beside her.

No familiar presence guiding her steps.

Just her.

Something inside Ayan shifted.

Not suddenly.

Not violently.

But deeply.

This was different.

She had never been alone before.

And for the first time…

There was nothing between them.

No distance created by others.

No barrier except the one inside him.

His heart began to race.

Slow at first.

Then faster.

Then uncontrollable.

This was the moment.

The moment that should not happen.

Ayan felt his feet move.

One step.

Then another.

Every instinct told him to stop.

To turn away.

To protect himself from something he could not control.

But he didn't.

Because sometimes…

The heart does not listen.

As he moved closer, the world around him began to blur.

The sounds faded.

The movement slowed.

Everything disappeared…

Except her.

She was closer now.

Closer than she had ever been.

Ayan's breath felt uneven.

His thoughts scattered.

What was he doing?

Why was he doing this?

What would happen next?

He didn't know.

And maybe…

That was the most terrifying part.

Zoya slowed down slightly, adjusting her scarf as the wind brushed against her. For a brief second, her attention shifted away from the path ahead.

And in that moment—

Ayan was right there.

It happened too quickly.

Too naturally.

Too unexpectedly.

She stepped forward.

He stepped forward.

And suddenly—

They collided.

It wasn't forceful.

Not dramatic.

Just a soft, accidental impact.

But for Ayan…

It felt like the world had stopped breathing.

"I'm sorry—"

The words left his lips instantly, almost without thought.

Zoya looked up.

And for the first time…

Their eyes met.

Not almost.

Not briefly.

Not accidentally.

Truly met.

Ayan felt something break inside him.

Or maybe…

Something open.

Her eyes were not what he had imagined.

They were deeper.

Softer.

And yet…

There was something distant in them.

Something untouched.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Time stretched.

Silence grew louder.

"I… I'm sorry," Ayan repeated, his voice quieter now.

Zoya blinked softly, as if returning from somewhere far away.

"It's okay," she said.

Her voice.

Ayan had imagined it a hundred times.

But reality…

Was different.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't expressive.

It was calm.

Gentle.

Almost like a whisper carried by the wind.

And somehow…

That made it harder to breathe.

Ayan stepped back slightly, creating space between them.

"I didn't see you," he added, even though it wasn't entirely true.

Zoya nodded faintly.

"It happens."

Simple words.

Normal words.

But to Ayan…

They felt like everything.

Another silence followed.

But this one was different.

Not heavy.

Not uncomfortable.

Just… fragile.

As if one wrong word could shatter it completely.

Ayan wanted to say something.

Anything.

To stop the moment from ending.

But what could he say?

Hi, I've been watching you for days?

Hi, your name has become a part of my existence?

Hi, I don't even know you, but I feel like I do?

No.

None of it made sense.

So he stayed quiet.

Zoya adjusted her scarf again, her gaze lowering slightly.

"I should go," she said softly.

The words hit him harder than expected.

Of course she should go.

Why wouldn't she?

This moment was never meant to last.

Ayan nodded.

"Yeah… of course."

She gave a small, polite nod in return.

And then—

She walked past him.

Just like that.

The moment ended.

But something had changed.

Ayan stood there, unmoving.

His heart still racing.

His mind still trying to understand what had just happened.

He had spoken to her.

Not imagined.

Not dreamed.

Real.

Her voice still echoed in his ears.

Her eyes still lingered in his thoughts.

Her presence still surrounded him, even though she was already gone.

Ayan slowly turned, watching as she disappeared into the distance once again.

But this time…

It felt different.

Because she wasn't just a distant figure anymore.

She was real.

And reality…

Changes everything.

That night, Ayan couldn't sit still.

He walked around his room, replaying the moment again and again.

Every word.

Every second.

Every detail.

"It's okay."

Her voice repeated in his mind.

Soft.

Endless.

He stopped near the window, looking out into the quiet night.

The world seemed calm.

Unaware.

Unchanged.

But inside him…

Everything was different.

Because a line had been crossed.

A moment had happened.

And now…

There was no going back.

Ayan closed his eyes slowly.

And for the first time…

He didn't just remember her.

He felt her presence.

Closer.

Real.

Dangerous.

Because now…

This wasn't just silence anymore.

This was the beginning of something that could break him.

And deep down…

He knew it.

But he didn't stop.

Because some moments…

Even when they shouldn't happen…

Still do.
