Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Weight of Emptiness

The sky over the Kingdom of Valerion was not blue; it was a bruised, sickly purple, weeping a golden rain that sizzled against the stone. In the "Lower Ring"—the slums where the sun's light was filtered through the smog of the Alchemist District—a young man named Kaelen Voss sat on a jagged outcrop of rock, staring at his palms.

"Nothing," he whispered.

He closed his eyes, trying to guide the ambient mana of the world into his veins. He felt the golden rain's energy touch his skin, but the moment it entered his body, it didn't flow. It didn't empower his muscles or sharpen his senses. Instead, it vanished into the dark, silent pit in the center of his chest.

In a world where every child was a candle, Kaelen was a guttering wick in a hurricane.

"Kaelen! Still dreaming of the stars?"

A group of three young men, dressed in the silk tunics of the Inner Circle Academy, approached. The leader, a blonde youth named Jaxen, smirked as he conjured a small flame between his fingers.

"I heard the Elders officially struck your name from the registry today," Jaxen sneered, the fire in his hand pulsing. "A 'Spirit Devourer,' they called you. A waste of royal blood. Why do you even stay here? You're just a hole in the world."

Kaelen didn't look up. "The hole has to be filled eventually, Jaxen."

"Not by you." Jaxen flicked his wrist. The ball of fire streaked toward Kaelen's chest.

Usually, Kaelen would dodge. Usually, he would take the burn and move on. But today was different. Today, the "emptiness" in his chest wasn't just cold—it was hungry.

As the flame hit his chest, it didn't explode. It didn't sear his flesh. The fire simply... collapsed. It bent toward his solar plexus, swirling like water down a drain, until it disappeared entirely.

Jaxen froze. "What did you do?"

Kaelen gasped. For the first time in seventeen years, he felt a flicker of warmth. But it wasn't the warmth of mana; it was the warmth of prey.

Suddenly, a cold, mechanical voice echoed not in his ears, but directly into the marrow of his bones:

[Primordial Protocol Initialized...] [Condition Met: Absorb the essence of a 'Low-Grade Ignis' spark.] [The Void Core is awakening.] [Current Status: 0.0001% Satiated.]

Kaelen clutched his chest, his eyes snapping open. The purple sky seemed to sharpen. He could see the flow of mana in the air—the golden veins of the world—and they all looked like strands of silk waiting to be pulled.

"My turn," Kaelen said, his voice dropping an octave.

He stood up, and for the first time, the boys from the Academy felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. It was the feeling of standing on the edge of a cliff, looking down into an abyss that was finally looking back.
