Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Beginning of Something Unspoken

The office didn't feel like a place where people worked

It felt like a place where people survived

Ava stepped into the floor the next morning, and immediately felt the shift in atmosphere. Conversations lowered. Eyes followed her. Some curious… others openly judgmental

"She's the one?

"She looks… ordinary.

"Probably won't last a week.

Ava pretended not to hear any of it

She kept walking

Focused

Unshaken

"Miss Ava.

She turned at the sound of her name

A man stood near the reception desk, holding a tablet

"Follow me.

The walk to his office felt longer this time

Not because she didn't know the way

but because she knew who she was going to see

When the door opened

he was already there

Standing

Waiting

Like he always knew everything before it happened

"You're early," he said

Ava stepped in. "I thought that was required.

A brief pause

Then

"…It is.

He studied her for a moment longer than necessary

Then gestured toward a desk across from his

"Sit.

She did

"Your first task," he said, sliding a document toward her, "is simple.

She opened it

Then paused

"…This isn't simple.

"It is," he replied. "If you're capable.

Ava looked up at him

Their eyes met

And that same quiet tension returned

"You're testing me.

"I'm evaluating you.

"Same thing.

A faint shift in his expression

"Not quite.

Silence stretched between them

But it wasn't empty

It felt… charged

Ava looked back down at the document

Then began working

She didn't ask for help

Didn't complain

Didn't hesitate

And he noticed

Of course he did

Minutes passed

Then more

And without realizing it

she became aware of his presence

Not just as her boss

But as something… heavier

Something that made the room feel smaller

"Your posture is wrong.

Her hand paused

She looked up

"I'm sorry?

"Your posture," he repeated calmly. "It's inefficient.

Ava frowned slightly

"…Are you watching my posture?

His gaze didn't move

"Everything in this room matters.

A pause

Then quietly

"Especially you.

Her breath caught

Just slightly

But she recovered quickly

"…Noted.

Another silence

But this one felt different

Less cold

More… aware

"You think I'm being unfair," he said suddenly

Ava blinked

"I didn't say that.

"You didn't have to.

She hesitated

Then

"…You're strict.

"That's not an answer.

A faint tension built again

She met his gaze

"You're not asking me to lie. You're asking me to be honest.

"Am I wrong?

"No.

A pause

Then

"…You're difficult.

A flicker

Not annoyance

Something closer to amusement

"Good.

Ava frowned slightly

"Why is that good?

"Because," he said, voice quieter now, "people who are easy to deal with… are easy to forget.

Something shifted again

This time

in her chest

She quickly looked back down at her work

Focusing

Too much

Too fast

He watched her

Not openly

Not in a way anyone else would notice

But he was watching

Always

At one point, she reached for a file at the same time he did

Their hands brushed

Barely

It lasted less than a second

But neither of them moved immediately

Ava felt it first

The heat

The awareness

The sudden, strange stillness

She pulled her hand back quickly

"…Sorry.

He didn't respond right away

Just looked at her

A little longer than before

Then

"…It's fine.

But his voice was different

Slightly lower

Slightly… restrained

The rest of the day passed like that

Work

Silence

Glances that lasted too long

Moments that shouldn't mean anything

but somehow did

And when Ava finally stood to leave

he spoke again

"You didn't fail.

She paused

Turned slightly

"…That's not a compliment.

"No.

A beat

"…But it's not a dismissal either.

She studied him for a moment

Trying to read him

Trying to understand what was behind that controlled exterior

But like always

he gave nothing away

"See you tomorrow," he added

Simple

Controlled

But somehow

it lingered

Ava nodded

"…See you tomorrow.

She walked out

And for a long moment after she left

he didn't move

Didn't speak

Didn't even breathe differently

Then quietly

almost to himself

"…Interesting.

And that was the beginning

Not love

Not yet

But something dangerous

Something neither of them fully understood

Something that would take time

and break both of them in the process.Chapter 3: The Beginning of Something Unspoke
