Chapter 17 - The Calm Before The Storm

Morning came quietly, but the silence inside Lin Yanyan's penthouse office was not peaceful. It was heavy with the kind of stillness left behind after emotions had shifted too far to return to where they started. The sunlight spread across the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting pale gold over the room, touching the edges of the desk, the couch, the half-finished glass of water on the table. Su Chen stood by the window, one hand in his pocket, watching the city below as if the endless movement of people and cars meant something to him.

Behind him, Lin Yanyan sat on the couch, barefoot now, heels left carelessly near the edge of the rug. Her usually perfect posture was gone. She leaned back, one arm stretched over the couch, the other holding a cup of coffee that had long gone warm. Her eyes stayed on him.

"You're thinking too much," she said.

Su Chen didn't turn. "You assume I'm thinking."

"You always are."

"That's not a compliment."

"It wasn't meant to be."

A small silence followed.

Then Lin Yanyan stood up and walked toward him, her steps slow and light. There was none of the hard authority she carried in front of employees or business rivals. This version of her was quieter, but not weaker. If anything, she was more dangerous like this—less guarded, more direct.

"You're leaving again," she said.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"The base."

"You say that like I know what that means."

Su Chen turned this time. "You know enough."

Her expression tightened slightly. "That's your favorite answer."

"It works."

"It's irritating."

"That too."

Her lips moved like she was suppressing a smile. "You really don't know how to talk to women."

"I talk to you."

"Barely."

"That seems to be enough."

"It isn't."

That made him look at her properly.

Lin Yanyan crossed her arms, but it wasn't defensive. It was controlled irritation, mixed with something quieter beneath it.

"You came back after years. You changed. You married me. You disappear whenever you decide to. Then you come back and tell me I matter like it's obvious." She paused. "None of that is normal."

"Nothing around me is normal."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to argue.

Then she exhaled.

"…I hate that you do this."

"Do what?"

"Make me understand even when I don't want to."

Su Chen's expression didn't change much, but his eyes sharpened slightly. "Then stop understanding."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Her gaze held his. "Because I chose not to."

That landed heavier than either of them expected.

The silence that followed wasn't uncomfortable. It was full.

Before Su Chen could respond, his phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

He pulled it out.

Zhao Ren.

He answered immediately.

"What?"

"Boss, we found something," Zhao Ren said, his voice unusually serious. "The people targeting Lin Yanyan… they moved again."

Su Chen's eyes changed.

"How?"

"One of our outer surveillance points got hit. Three men dead. Not ours."

"Who did it?"

"That's the problem. We don't know."

A pause.

"But whoever it was… they weren't normal."

Lin Yanyan had already stepped closer.

"Put it on speaker."

Su Chen did.

Zhao Ren paused. "…She's there?"

"Yes," Lin Yanyan answered herself.

"…Right."

"What happened?" she asked.

"One of the teams monitoring your routes was attacked near the eastern logistics district. The attackers weren't after information. They were looking for movement patterns."

Lin Yanyan's eyes narrowed. "My schedule."

"Yes."

Her expression hardened.

"Send location."

Zhao Ren hesitated. "Boss?"

"I said send it," Lin Yanyan repeated.

"It's dangerous."

"Then keep up."

The line went silent for a second.

"…Understood."

The call ended.

Lin Yanyan turned immediately.

"We're going."

Su Chen didn't move.

"You're not."

She stopped.

"Excuse me?"

"You're the one being target."

"Exactly."

"Which is why you're staying."

Her eyes flashed.

"You don't order me."

"Today I do."

"No."

"Yes."

The air between them tightened.

Lin Yanyan stepped closer, eyes cold now.

"You think I sit behind glass while other people bleed because of me?"

"I think emotional decisions create openings."

"And I think you mistake control for understanding."

That hit harder than it should have.

For a second, Su Chen said nothing.

Then—

"Fine you can come," he said.

Lin Yanyan blinked.

"…What?"

"You were going to go behind my back anyway."

Her expression shifted slightly.

"Then why argue?"

"To see if you'd listen."

"I didn't."

"I know."

For the first time that morning, he almost looked amused.

She stared at him.

"…You're unbelievable."

"You're still here."

"That's the irritating part."

Twenty minutes later, the black sedan stopped at the eastern district. Warehouses stood in rows, rusted gates and concrete roads stretching beneath a pale morning sky. The air smelled faintly of oil and dust.

Zhao Ren was already there.

When he saw Lin Yanyan step out with Su Chen, his expression tightened.

"You brought her."

"She brought herself," Su Chen said.

"That sounds more accurate," Lin Yanyan added.

Zhao Ren sighed. "Of course."

The bodies were under white sheets.

Three men.

Two gunshot wounds.

One neck snapped.

Lin Yanyan's eyes lingered on the third.

"That one wasn't done by them."

"No," Zhao Ren said. "That one was personal."

Su Chen crouched near the body.

His fingers brushed faint blood dust.

Then paused.

"…Qi residue."

Zhao Ren stiffened. "Cultivators?"

"Yes."

"Which realm?"

"Foundation Establishment."

Lin Yanyan's voice cut in quietly.

"Then why are they dead?"

Su Chen stood.

"Because someone stronger was here first."

Silence.

Zhao Ren frowned. "You mean another faction?"

"No."

Lin Yanyan's gaze had already changed.

Because she understood first.

"…They weren't first," she said.

Su Chen looked at her.

"No."

A shadow moved on the warehouse roof.

Fast.

Almost invisible.

Then—

Gone.

Zhao Ren's voice lowered. "You saw that?"

"Yes."

Lin Yanyan's hand slowly tightened.

"…They're watching."

Su Chen's expression became unreadable.

"Good."

"Good?" Zhao Ren repeated.

"They came closer."

Lin Yanyan looked at him. "You wanted that."

"Yes."

"You're using me as bait."

"No."

"Then what?"

His eyes met hers.

"I'm using myself."

The words stopped her.

And for the first time since she met him—

Lin Yanyan felt something unfamiliar.

Not fear.

But the edge of it.

Because she suddenly realized something dangerous.

The people moving around them weren't watching her.

They weren't tracking her.

They were waiting for him.

And if that was true—

Then whatever was coming next…

Would be far worse than any of them expected.
