Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38:

Chapter 38 — Stage Two

The acceptance did not echo; it settled.

"I accept."

The words slipped from Aken's lips, fragile as spun glass yet heavy with a gravity that threatened to pull the world in after them. They lingered in the suffocating void, trembling with significance. For a heartbeat, the darkness remained indifferent—unyielding, cold, pressing in from every direction, unmoved by the weight of his choice.

Then—

The other smiled.

Not warmly, not kindly, but with something deeper—an ancient understanding threaded with secrets only he could know.

"Good," he said softly. "Then we won't waste any more time."

Aken swallowed, his throat dry, his body still trembling from everything he had heard—everything he had agreed to.

"You said there were three things."

The other Aken nodded, already moving. Each step was precise, deliberate—a ritual perfected over countless repetitions, the quiet choreography of inevitability.

"There are," he replied. "And if you falter at any point, you die again. This time… permanently."

Aken said nothing, because he knew—

That was not a threat; it was a fact. The other Aken stopped inches away. The resemblance was suffocating—same face, same eyes—but the weight behind them was different. Older, vast, and unfathomable.

"First," he said, raising a finger, "we force your evolution."

Aken frowned. "You already said that."

"And I also said it would hurt."

"How much?"

The other Aken tilted his head slightly.

"Enough to shatter you to your core."

Silence followed after that sentence.

Aken's fingers curled slowly.

"And if I don't?"

"You go back," the other one said calmly. "Your body fails, your heart stops, your friend dies screaming, the girl gets her neck crushed. And everything you've fought for becomes a footnote in someone else's story."

Each word cut cleanly, precisely, and mercilessly.

Aken's jaw tightened.

"Do it."

No hesitation this time, no fear, only his resolve. The other Aken studied him for a moment—

Then nodded.

"My pleasure."

He stepped forward and placed a hand on Aken's chest. The instant their skin touched—

Everything shattered. Aken's eyes widened as a scream tore from his throat.

"AHHHHHH!"

Agony, not sharp, not dull.

Everything.

Every nerve ignited at once, as though something deep within him had ruptured, flooding his body with white-hot torment. His cursed energy didn't flow—it exploded, wild and uncontrollable. His vision fractured into jagged shards of memory and sensation.

Aken collapsed to his knees, hands grasping at nothing, breath broken and uneven.

"MAKE IT STOP—"

"It doesn't stop."

The other Aken's voice cut through the chaos, cold and unyielding.

"You wanted power."

Aken's body shook violently as energy tore through him, breaking him apart and rebuilding him at once.

"You wanted to protect them."

Jae-Min—bleeding, barely standing, still fighting.

"You wanted to change something."

Soo-ah—mentally broken, barely breathing.

"Then endure it."

Aken's scream turned raw, primal—pain laced with rage, fury at everything taken from him and everything now demanded in return. His fingers clawed at the empty void, searching for something—anything to hold onto.

His mind strained, but did not break. Because beneath the agony, something else stirred.

A shift, tectonic and terrifying—something inside him cracking open, as if the truth he'd buried for years was finally clawing its way out.

"Second," the other Aken continued, indifferent to the screams, "I take control."

Aken barely heard him.

"What…"

"You can't win like this," he said. "Even with Stage Two, your body isn't enough. Your instincts aren't enough. Your experience isn't enough."

Aken forced his head up, eyes burning.

"So you just… take over?"

"Yes."

"And I'm supposed to trust you?"

A faint smile.

"You don't."

"Then why—"

"Because you have no better option."

The silence after that felt like a slap to his face.

Aken's breathing was ragged.

"Will I still be there?"

The other paused.

"Yes."

"Watching?"

"Yes."

"And if you don't give it back?"

The other Aken stepped closer, their eyes locking.

"Then you disappear."

Calm, certain, and absolute. Aken searched his face—looking for doubt, for hesitation—but found nothing. Only truth, brutal and final.

He exhaled slowly, as though shedding what remained of who he used to be.

"…Fine."

No strength left for fear, no time left for doubt.

"Do it."

The other Aken nodded.

"Excellent."

"Third," he said, raising his final finger, "your weapon."

Aken's vision flickered. Miokuo—still calling his name.

"You've been holding it back from its true potential," the other Aken said. "Treating it like a tool instead of what it really is."

"And what is it?"

"A part of you."

Silence.

"Evolve it. Aken said. "Now."

Aken's consciousness trembled.

"I was going to wait but—"

"You don't have time."

"I don't even know what it becomes—"

"You don't need to."

The other Aken stepped back.

"Just give it everything."

Aken clenched his teeth, energy surging wildly through him.

"Miokuo."

For a moment, nothing. Then a faint voice answered.

"…Master…"

Aken's chest tightened.

"…I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For waiting."

The darkness trembled. Miokuo's presence sharpened.

"You're finally doing it?"

"…Yeah."

Aken forced a faint, defiant smile through the pain.

"Don't mess it up."

Miokuo's tone shifted—steady, serious.

"I won't, master."

The void trembled—not metaphorically, but physically, as if something ancient had awakened. Another wave of pain surged through Aken, but this time, it carried power. Raw, violent, and unrestrained. Like a storm raging through his veins.

The other Aken watched in silence.

"…Good," he murmured.

Then, stepping forward one last time—

"Now, wake up."

The world shattered, and sound returned slowly.

A scream rang in through his ear, Jae-Min.

"GET UP!"

Then pain—sharp and real—as Aken's body slammed back into existence like a meteor striking earth.

His eyes snapped open. The ruined hall, broken ground, the stench of blood.

And—

The Vampire Prince.

Unharmed, smiling.

"Oh?" it murmured. "You're still alive."

Aken didn't answer. Something had changed. His body felt lighter, sharper, much stronger. Not just physically—everything had shifted. His perception, his instincts, his awareness.

The Vampire Prince's smile widened.

"Interesting."

Aken rose slowly. His body trembled—but did not fall. Behind his eyes, something stirred. A second presence. Calm, cold, and watching.

"So this is it,"Aken whispered, voice laced with exhaustion and awe.

The reply came—not entirely his own.

"Yes."

Aken lifted his head. And, for the first time—

He smiled. Not from arrogance or bravado, but from something quieter and far more dangerous—a hope that had endured.

The fight was not over, and now, he understood—

He was no longer alone.
