Chapter 36 - UNMISTAKABLE

Kyle did not hesitate. He surged forward, his boots churning up dust as he sprinted toward the spot where he had caught the flicker of movement. He braced himself, his mind already calculating the variables of a lethal encounter; he was certain the Dark Lord had orchestrated this as a final, brutal trial of his strength.

He skidded to a halt, lance raised, only to find the figure stepping out from the gloom was Vaygar. The creature stood tall, his physiology a jarring, majestic hybrid of a lion's muscular feline grace and the armored, scaled resilience of a dragon. Vaygar looked composed, though his predatory eyes betrayed a flicker of unease. He explained that the very runes Kyle had encountered above had activated in a sequence he didn't fully comprehend, depositing him deep within the subterranean network.

With Vaygar now at his side, they followed the path Mongrel had silently carved out for them. Kyle's attention, however, kept drifting. The underground architecture was littered with the remnants of advanced, arcane technologies utilized by the beasts—structures that defied the rudimentary understanding of the surface dwellers. He studied them with a growing, cold fascination.

They did not walk alone for long. A figure emerged from the shadows: Azula. She didn't approach aggressively, but instead offered a deep, formal bow. She kept her eyes averted until she turned her gaze toward Mongrel. She was trembling, clearly battling a profound, instinctual fear, yet she managed to articulate a request for a private audience.

Mongrel did not even turn his head. He remained a statue of indifference, but the air around them reacted with violent, eerie precision. A voice, sounding like grinding tectonic plates, echoed in the chamber, commanding her to leave. Azula hesitated, casting a desperate glance toward Kyle before pleading for him to accompany her on a critical quest.

Mongrel finally responded, his tone dismissive. "The boy's decision is his own to make." With an aloof shrug, he signaled that he would wait while Kyle did as he pleased, before dissolving into a conflagration of dark, swirling flames.

Kyle, his mind still preoccupied with the biomechanical wonders of the tunnel, barely registered the weight of the moment. He shrugged and decided to follow Azula. Vaygar let out a sharp, mocking laugh, the sound rumbling deep within his leonine chest. "Look at you," he teased, his voice dripping with irony. "They treat you like a god, and you walk among them like you're just out for a stroll."

Kyle said nothing, his pride beginning to calcify into something far more dangerous. He watched Azula closely; he noticed the way she manipulated runic magic, and he made a silent, calculated vow: he would force her to teach him those secrets.

Azula led them deeper into the labyrinthine halls until they reached an expansive chamber dominated by a massive circular floor design. Etched into the stone were intricate, glowing teleportation runes that pulsed with a rhythmic, azure light. Azula stepped onto the center of the ring, beckoning Kyle forward with a wave of her hand. Kyle approached, his boots clicking sharply against the cold floor before he planted his feet firmly within the runic circle. As the final sigil ignited beneath them, the world groaned; reality folded in on itself, bending space and light, and in a blink, the dark underground city was stripped away, replaced by the harsh, blinding sun of the desolate surface.

Far in the distance, the silhouette of the tower stood as a silent monolith.

They halted when the sands below began to churn. A tremor ran through the ground, and a massive, segmented beast—a Dust-Crusher—burst forth. Kyle moved with preternatural speed, placing himself squarely between Azula and the creature. He parried its massive limb with a bone-jarring impact and sent the beast spiraling back into the depths with a single, brutal shove.

"This one's mine," Kyle said, his voice devoid of warmth as he barred Azula's path with a steady hand.

The earth beneath them erupted. Dozens of Dust-Crushers and armored scorpions flooded the dunes, their chitinous shells clashing. The skirmish devolved into a slaughter. Kyle and Azula moved like twin harbingers of ruin, a storm of steel and light that left only silence in their wake.

As the dust began to settle, Kyle took a final, sharp look at Azula's stance. He froze. Beyond the intricate runic patterns she etched into the air, her bladework—the way she pivoted, the economy of her strikes, the predatory grace of her follow-through—was unmistakably, chillingly identical to the fighting style of the demons he had spent his life vowing to destroy.
